Goodbye Blip

7/21/2015

As many of you already know, Blip TV is closing its doors on August 20th.  I've been working with Blip for the past 6 years, and my time with them has been great, and I'm certainly going to miss posting my stuff with them.  Without Blip's help, we wouldn't have been able to do a lot of the projects that we've done over the years, and we certainly wouldn't have been able to build up our library as big as it's become.

So what does this mean for us and our videos?  Nothing major really, it just means that there's going to be a very very long process of changing the embeds on the site, plus we'll be converting our back catelogue to our new youtube page, which you can find here.  Please subscribe to our new page, even if you don't plan on watching them on youtube.  The more subscriptions we get, the more awesome stuff we can do with that page.  For the time being, you'll still see our new episodes on Blip.  As far as what's going to happen post-Blip closing its doors, rest assured we'll be moving into another home shortly.

Our workflow is still the same, I'm still working on a new Snob episode this week, and we've still got the Midnight Screenings, plus the premiere of "Lloyd" coming up towards the weekend.  Until then, look for us in the remaining month of Blip, as well as our backlog's new home on YouTube.

easy question.
he originally started on youtube, and then got copyright banned, with spoonys help he moved to blip and got hosted there till he could start his own website, thus why the two fan bases get along and are favorably bias twords each other

blip has real people to talk to and no automated systems, so no bullshit copyright crap to worry about, youtube is a fucking nightmare if you want to go fair use.

Brad knows his cinemasnob reviews aren't fair use. Why do you think he only sells the public domain reviews on DVD?

RR
7/24/2015 05:38:12 am

Actually vcxv, they are fair-use, but part of fair-use is you can't make money from it. So if he was selling them they would stop being fair-use.

vcxv
7/24/2015 07:27:16 am

Fair use is a defense in court. If somebody wanted to sue Brad and take it all the way to trial, he'd have to convince a Jury that his videos are fair use, while the other side (copyright holder) argues that his videos are infringement. Him selling the reviews on DVD would certainly be a factor if Brad lost the case and the Jury or Judge was deciding the damages. Or in a more likely scenario, they would settle and Brad would probably owe several thousand dollars.

Whether he would loose the case or not is debatable. I tend to think he would loose because his videos are basically him riffing copyrighted movie clips. I don't think they meet enough criteria for fair use.

But it's pointless to debate this with you. You've obviously not a lawyer, don't work in the entertainment industry, and are completely ignorant of how copyright laws work. In my personal opinion, Brad should be paying royalties to the copyright holders of the movies he "reviews" since his whole show is based around content he doesn't own. It's a shame you can make a movie and some guy can take your work and profit from it without giving you a dime.

If you take a song and use it in a movie without licensing it, the artist can easily prove copyright infringement. It's ridiculous that somebody can steal movie clips and use them freely as long as they call it a "review". It's a riff show, plain and simple. (and I won't even get into the songs Brad steals for his movies)

Sorry kid but licensing content is the way the entertainment industry works. The only reason Brad gets a way with it is because nobody want to spend money fighting it in court and Brad probably has no assets or money to make it worthwhile. Now lets see if he deletes this comment to sweep this topic under the rug.

LostAlone
7/25/2015 03:03:18 am

Sorry VCXC but 'review' isn't a legal term (and for good reason) and all critique is totally protected by fair use. It's one of the primary reasons that fair use exists. It does't matter what style or form your critique takes, whether it's funny or serious or surreal or even really crappy, the law would protect you as a reviewer as long as the judge believes there is some legitimate critical value to what you made with no requirements of originally or quality, simply that you gave an opinion. That is just how it is.

Copyright holders know it too. No company is insane enough to try and bring a case that's directly against precedent and the letter of the law. That's not just a case that you'll lose, that's the kind of case that'll get kicked pre-trial and the lawyers bringing it sanctioned.

Distributing a copyrighted work in whole (or in large part) without licence is very different. The law has held up the idea that something can't be fair use if it shows the whole piece. Not even Roger Ebert can show a whole movie and talk over it and claim fair use as a review even if it IS all critique. Neither can MST3k by the way; they had to licence all their movies for exactly that reason, even though their work was hugely transformative.

The bottom line is that Brad doesn't owe anyone anything. He's a reviewer with his own style and his own approach but certainly still a reviewer. You don't have to own content to criticize it. That's an absolute protection under law. The idea that reviewers have to licence a movie clip to tell an audience that it's horrible is abhorrent to the idea of free speech.

vcxv
7/25/2015 06:30:36 am

Fair use is not that cut and dry. The case would center around:

The amount of clips Brad used and the length of the clips
The effect on the potential market for the work
Benefit to the public

The cinema snob show is basically Brad re-editing a movie into a cliffnotes version and riffing it. By using every interesting scene and summarizing the whole plot, you can make the argument that the viewer now has no reason to see the actual movie

Again, it's not cut and dry and would mostly be up to a judge. I think Brad uses far too much content to win on fair use. By calling his riff show a review, he is simply hiding behind the facade of critique so he can game the system to produce and profit from a show the built around content he doesn't have to license.

His movie soundtracks are proof that he has no problems with infringing copyright. You think he's going to act in an ethical manner when it comes to his flagship show?

James Rolfe moved away from Blip many many years ago. He's been using Springboard, or was cause I'm not sure what he used in 2015, because the treat their customers better, so it's not a big loss to see Blip go. Besides there's also Dailymotion too. Blip had it coming. They got stupid, began kicking low raters like Oddity Archive off their site, and censorship through the roof got super ridiculous in my opinion. YouTube could be next if they don't watch themselves. If you're an up and coming video promoter following in the footsteps of Blip do yourselves a favor. Fight for free speech, and never censor. You can put a rating, a warning, but never censor. Leave open a PayPal donate button, make advertisers pay fairly, and don't kick low raters off just cause you think it's a good business model.

Anyone who's been paying attention has known for several months that Blip was going away. The final indication was when Doug moved over to the new service that he's currently using.

I thought maybe everyone leaving Blip could also be because the site hasn't been paying anyone, which made me further wonder why Brad was still using it. I figured, "Maybe he's just loyal, or something."

Anyway, I hope all works out well with the YouTube move for Brad. I know that copyright strikes come very easily over there. Mike J and a handful of others appear to have been able to make the transition fine. Then again, most of what Mike J does now doesn't include clips of stuff.

The Nostalgia Critic's Jurassic World review is, I think, a good indication of what will eventually end up happening with him. Red Letter Media and Midnight Screenings are also things that should work quite well on YouTube.

Consider me subscribed.

Well, that being said, this website, and my viewership, sure have come a long way since the day Spoony features one or two of your videos on his site...for one thing, the Yetis got a whole lot creepier, and you lost a metric fuck-ton of weight! Those were from the 10-minute limit days of Youtube. For all I know, it's because of Blip that the Snob was able to go beyond that limit during those days.

I think we need a special funeral episode for Blip. Maybe Josh "Snob's Dick" Hadley can give the eulogy.

No he blew all of the internet gold on The Heaven's Gate Review. History repeating itself. Blip gave the so called genius Craig Golightly total artistic control and what he do? He built an exact replica of Springfield in 2015 when he already was in Springfield in 2015, then paid a Christopher Walken impersonator more than it cost to hire the real Christopher Walken and was taking anything up to 70 takes of his own arch replies. And that's before you factor in the untold deaths of countless chickens in a stunt that wasn't even on screen. Brad Jones is blameless. He simply reviewed a MOS in an honest and professional manner and now he has to live off the charity random women he meets on line. His only mistake was to believe in the so called genius of so called genius Craig Golightly, who is even now planning an a 8 part review of Ishtar. in collaboration with a Warren Beatty impersonator. who is insisting on 10,000 Bedouin midgets and the rebirth of international socialism before he even looks at the contract.

I would have made a deal. I would have stopped Blip from closing because that's what I do. I make deals. Then, I would have posted numerous world class reviews, talking about very classy movies.

I mean, we're talking the best reviews that the internet has ever seen. I'd made the reviews, and we'd all make a lot of money together. A lot of money.

Has Brad Jones done that? Of course he hasn't. Instead, he just stands there while Blip closes and more Mexican rapists get into the country.

Aren't there any alternative websites to go to instead of YouTube? When Angry Joe went back there, he started dealing with amazingly awful copyright procedures with his videos. I feel like the same thing is going to happen with other people and content creators who go back to YouTube and it's only going to spell trouble for the creators and the audience. I just think that there has to be alternatives rather than pony back to the biggest corporate owned video site on the internet. Hell I think Spoony stopped making "real" videos" because of the YouTube thing. Or am I just looking too deep into this? I don't know it just doesn't seem like it would be a good idea.

Angry Joe's problems are of his own creation. Nintendo takes a cut of his Let's Play footage and he throws a hissy fit. But he's already earning money from his pay membership for his Angry Joe Army. If I were getting money from people, I'd still put up a Nintendo Let's Play even if I couldn't monetize it because I'd respect my audience (it might not be my highest priority, but I'd still do it).

It's relatively easy to make a 20-30 minute game review without seriously infringing on copyrights. The footage could be used to demonstrate mechanics without showing the story or music.

The 20-30 minute TGWTG movie reviewers, in comparison, almost certainly violate copyright. Brad's better off because half the stuff he covers no one cares about.
