THE REVIEWERS: "Shooting Space"

6/8/2014

It's one year later for Andy and Jeff.  The Messiah is dead, and the boys dream of filling his shoes.  That is if the can stop arguing over whose turn it is to film in the basement.

Andy's arrogant assertion that the shuffling off of his comedic approach in favour of a more analytical standpoint has rendered him a superior internet reviewer kind of reminds me of someone.

Things I liked:

-The Rickhead
-The guest star shows
-Scott as the narrator
-The humor and the pacing of the episode

Will this be a regular show on the site or an irregular show like 80s Dan?

I have nothing to do with this site, but it's my understanding that it's very hard for them to schedule everybody together to get something like this and 80s Dan accomplished. Either way, they look great and I can't wait for more!

I'm working on the next episode right now, this show will have a regular season of episodes; not irregular like the other shows. Granted, the season will be short, but if it goes over well, there will be another season of episodes next year.

Brad... Dave as The Rickhead is still, IMHO, one of your finest (and that includes funniest) ideas of all time. It's impossible to see anyone else play a parody of those YouTube "ranter" types anywhere close to such a degree of perfection. If there was a Rickhead spin-off on YouTube consisting exclusively of Rickhead rant videos, I would watch every single one of those.

As for the show itself: Of course I'll keep watching, but the one criticism I have is that it continues to be a little too on-the-nose in its satire/parody elements. And I don't even mean the shows-within-the-show primarily.

This is fantastic! And so well-timed, I'd dare say it was planned. ~.^

I just received my copy of 'The Uncanny Valley' in the mail this week and enjoyed the insightful commentary, detailing meticulously planned but ultimately scrapped ideas that would have doubled the length of the pilot... So I watched this new episode with said unused ideas at the forefront of my thoughts. (Mostly, I'm wondering, is "Drug Dealer" just that, or will he be revealed to be Nick Pike in later episodes? And if so, is the link between Pike and Jeff's "agent" perhaps the way in which Pike makes his Internet comeback?)

I love "the death of the Messiah" - am I imagining parallels with The Nostalgia Critic's death and comeback? - as the catalyst for forward motion with the characters.

Other things... The "Narrator" voice is perfect - I'm getting echoes of Jean Shepherd in 'A Christmas Story'. ~.^ The bit with Michelle's book club vs. Jeff's geeky gripes - which felt very much like a "for the ladies" moment - gets my approval, as the possessor of a vagina. (Possibly attached to my body, even!) (Although I, personally, am more likely to be the one making the geeky gripes. ;D) Loved the cameos by Phelous, Linkara, and Viga. I hope to see more surprise guests in the future. And the Rickhead... is the Rickhead. Absolutely perfect.

My favorite line: "Oh, I don't enjoy that. I just like knowing how much better I am than him." As a terrible person, that really speaks to me on a personal level. Because regardless of what you do, sometimes, you just take solace in the personal knowledge - okay, opinion - that you are the talented individual.

And I'd be remiss if I didn't point out that the music is beautiful!! With the Narrator speaking overtop, it reminded me of Donovan's 'Atlantis'. 6_6

Sorry for the overlong comment, but as the first episode in a new series, Brad, I thought you might want some detailed feedback. I am interested - based both on your 'Uncanny Valley' commentary, and this episode - to see how the show progresses. Your writing is forever improving, so keep it up!!~~ <3

Loved it, absolutely loved it. Brad looks like the kinda guy I would love getting my drugs from, I really really like the editing (sharp and perfectly on time; this is something that a lot of internet content creators cannot do and it kills their work for me) and the writing, well, it is exactly what I expected from a SG production.

Well my gushing juice ran out. I'm looking forward to watching more!

Maybe I just had to high expectations for this, because I’ve been looking forward to a new episode, but I didn’t think it was that funny. It felt like you tried to cram too much exposition, half-baked jokes and other minor characters into this episode.

Reply
Brad
6/9/2014 02:21:56 am

The Sports Injury Critic and The Modern Movie Cynics aren't really minor characters, they're just quick fake shows within the show, like Count Thomas Howell's and Space Lancer Steve's show. Future episodes probably won't even show those other shows, as there will be other fake shows the characters will be watching. Not all the time, but every now and then to show this particular world of videos.

Oh, I can see it now:

The crazy cat critic(Nyah!)
The semen critic(Good to the last drop)
The couch critic(I give it three fluffs out of five)
The critic critic(where one critiques how close to Jay Sherman a typical person can be)
And of course The serial killer critic(How does John Wayne Gacy stack up again the Son of Sam killer? Find out next week you sick fuck).

I...think that last one was in bad tastes....

The critic critic would be genious and i would like Welshy to play him he would be perfect for the role.

I´m glad "the reviewers" are back because they were my favourite part of the otherwise underwhelming (imo) "Uncanny valley". I really like Jake so seeing him in more of your videos is really cool. It´s also nice that you plan on doing seasons rather than vids every now and then like 80´s Dan (miss him so much :-( ) and Game Boys.

So please keep your good work up Brad and Crew. I really like your stuff.

Why are you acting like children? Seems like Sarah (SARAH!! /Snow) is their MOTHER instead of a roommate or whatever...

Besides that the acting is quite horrible lol sorry, most of it just looks so wooden and repeating studied text instead of natural acting. Not hating just trying to share how it comes across.

I did love the messiah and rickhead they were great, not just trying to act and speaking script but they actually felt like they were those people.

Jake and Brian dont feel like real people to me at all mostly for the reason I mentioned, they behave like kids. Not childish or anything, straight 5 year olds without a brain. I know thats normal in american movies these days but Id hoped for more from you guys.

Interesting you feel that way about The Messiah's speaking, seeing how you couldn't hear any of his lines since they were muted stock footage with voice over narration over it.

Reply
NathanHawk
6/9/2014 01:21:58 am

If you knew what this was satirizing, you'd know exactly why they behave either arrogant or like children. Andy's character is pretty much Kyle Kallgren's twitter account come to life, and the Michelle character appears to represent one of the HR people at Channel Awesome (I can't remember her name), going by some of the behind the scenes stories from the anniversary films.

Mikey Wan
6/9/2014 05:07:09 am

@Lothos You should really watch it, because it could be open to interpretation on who is based on who, as Brad has never said who the characters are based on. It is however a very good satire of Internet Reviewers and comes across less mean spiritied and just Brad having some fun at the expense of his own occupation.

Wait... That kind of camera work is a conscious stylistic choice by you as a director? Wow... I love your stuff, but that's horrible.

Brad
6/9/2014 06:01:40 am

Conscious stylistic choice? Not really, that's a bit of an over exaggeration, I wouldn't go that far. My point is that the stuff I've directed all look like they're from a SOV director because they are. They all don't look that radically different from each other. Look at this and Hooker with a Heart of Gold, and you can pretty easily tell I directed both.

But still, people should go see a typical shaky cam film like Die Hard 5 or Elysium, and then yell at me for shooting hand held. My stuff is steady as a rock compared to Hollywood shaky cam. At least I keep my actors in frame and you can tell what's going on

I don't usually comment on your stuff, because quality speaks for itself, but I feel strongly about commenting on this though; not because there is a lack of quality, but because I feel the need to encourage you in doing stuff like this.
Sure the acting was wooden at times, but ONLY AT TIMES (please forgive the caps). The great majority of the film was acted darn well (for a semi-amateur flick that is, though I've seen way worse in German Theatre-flicks).
The writing was spot on, the characters were likeable (to the extend characters like these can be likeable) and even though it hadn't had the laugh-out-loud moments (you know, those were you actually laugh and not just type LOL) like the Pilot did, I really(emphasizing) did enjoy it. I cannot state enough, that I applaud you for doing Original Content.
Being a Critic is easy, being a Producer hard. I would very much like more steady shots than handheld ones, but if I had to choose between bland writing and flawless execution and your regular Stoned Gremlim Production, I'd always opt for the latter.
All in all, I sincerely hope for this great Series to continue and I'm looking forward to all your future endeavours.

Brad Jones, you've come a long way and I hope the future is paved not only in yellow, but in gold bricks!

P.S. It would be fucking cool, if you had something like a theme contest, because the only thing I could do (besides playing your vids on loop) would be composing an extremely 80s Theme-Song for one of your shows.

P.P.S. Please ignore all flaws in my spelling or grammar fore I am not one of the conquered blessed ones.
