Ugh, I don't like Wonder Woman anymore. It says she came from an island called ISIS. And as we all know, Donald Trump is the head leader of ISIS, therefore she is a Trump lapdog and a horrible human being who deserves all the death threats on Twitter. #WonderWomanIsEvil #ChristiansRuinedComicBookMovies
My mistake, she prays to the Goddess ISIS. I can at least admit my mistakes and corrected them unlike some people who are too close minded that they vote for Trump.
You know, as condescending as everybody going after Trump and his supporters has been...they're probably not the ones i this situation most deserving to be a target of your biting satirical wit. A literal fascist is running for president right now. You'll forgive some people if their reactions to that fact are a bit mean-spirited.
How is Trump a 'literal fascist'?
Because a metaphysical fascist wouldn't work - you can't really oppress abstract notions.
Damnit, you stole my thunder. I was going to make a witty comeback about him being an epithetical fascist who throws people in labour camps for misusing the word 'literal'. :(
WW's best theatrical appearance was in The Lego Movie.
Not only is Blonde Wonder Woman fighting Montalban's Khan, but the actor playing George Calvin was an alien reptilian leader named Steven in the classic 80s mini-series V.
And whatever happened to the Donkey anyways?
Given the time this came out, I'm wondering if this was more based off that odd period in the late 60s/early 70s where Wonder Woman abandoned her powers and became a super-spy.
Doesn't excuse the hair color, but still.
Ugh, the white jumpsuit era. Definitely one of Diana's low points.
Wtf? Wierd, weird pilot, or whatever that was.
Still, would bang.
Anyway, that was this fountain from Friends opening, right?
What's with the reply buttons? Why do they say "Odpowiedz"? Just curious.
Also, hey, new Snob video! Cool! (watches)
Wait, it no longer says that. Weird...
Well, it means 'Reply' in polish
And apparently it changes to 'Odpowiedz' when someone from Poland is posting lol
Pants Be Darkened!
Dang! i was hoping you'd take on Darna, would have been interesting to read your fake subtitles while understanding the language of the movie. Now i'm starting to wonder how you managed to know of Darna AND James Batman? I'm surprised these movies even made it out of the Philippines.
Everyone was so thin, even the two police officers. Shit, we really have got fat. It's not health Nazi propaganda.
Is this Pants To Be Darkened bad?
No, but it's up there.
I was wondering if this was gonna be the Wonder Woman movie you were gonna review, because the combined powers of Nash, Linkara, and Film Brain already took care of the unreleased TV pilot from 2011 starring Adrianne Palicki, who later found success as the hero Mockingbird in Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
1:25- At least it makes sense for the Wonder Woman solo movie coming out next year to take place during World War I, because Ares, Wonder Woman's biggest villain, is the God of War.
7:15- Am I the only one thinking of Karate Girl during this review just now?
The Wonder Woman costume in this film is about as cheap as Reb Brown's Captain America costume.
15:13- I was gonna say the Donkey was going to meet the Adam West Batman in the Batcave, but the Hercules joke is better.
21:48- That photo is actually of Erica Durance in the Adrianne Palicki Wonder Woman suit in that episode of Harry's Law.
Secretarial skills? Coffee fetchin'? Takes dictation?
Hey.... lets not forget her other super power: she can make a helluva Beef Stroganoff!
Oh wow, another one I've already seen before the review. My mother recorded this on video for me when it replayed some time in the 80's.
"In what Universe is Wonder Woman blonde?!" Oh, Sheldon Cooper, you knowledgable stickler for authenticity, you. I wonder the same thing. Penny didn't know any better. Why should she? Anyway, this TV film is number 84 in the excellent 2004 book by David Hofstede "What Were They Thinking? The 100 Dumbest Events In TV History". And yeah, I saw the review those three knuckleheads did of the abomination that was the 2011 unaired NBC pilot episode. Pants To Be Darkened and all that. LOL!
Funny that you mentioned the Wonder Woman theme could be swapped for that of any other '70s TV show, because I swear I heard a hint of The Price is Right.
Appropriate actually, since the actress playing the evil amazon was a model on The Price is Right when this originally aired.
Brad, I'm surprised that you didn't touch on the previous attempt at a WW series, done by the folks who did the Adam West BATMAN series...
Well, to be completly honest, Wonder Woman actually worked as a secretary in her early years in the comics, and as a nurse, which was actually very interesting, she used to save people as her secret identity and as her heroin identity.
Only in the 70's could Wonder Woman have a heroin identity.
Played by Courtney Love!
This movie makes me wonder if the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" had not happened if there would have been an alternate earth filled with bad TV Justice League characters. This Wonder Woman fighting next to the "Its Superman" musical Superman and the 70's Captain Marvel.
Just combine this movie with the Joe Don Baker hit Mitchell and you have television gold.
In related news, "Batman vs. Superman: Dawn of Justice" is not getting stellar reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. You guys better get your popcorn ready; it looks like this Midnight Screening is gonna be a sequel!
I don't think it will be as divisive as Man O' Crap, coz looking at the reviews everyone seems to be saying it's an incoherent mess and even the praise is on the faint side. Brad. might like it because he'll be going in with fairly low expectations and when he does that he seems to get more sort of forgiving and "gee, I was entertained".
I've seen a few places that have said it's better than Man of Steel, including an excited tweet from an early screening and a negative review on Rotten Tomatoes...
If anyone needs me, I'll be selling pitchforks, torches and cotton candy. If you buy the latter two and get them mixed up, I will not be responsible for any damages incurred, nor will you be receiving a refund. Enjoy the show...
I don't really pay much attention to Rotten Tomatoes or reviews in general , but the last time I looked there were 46 reviews and it sat at 39%.
To be honest I've come to the conclusion that a) Zack Snyder is a poor filmmaker and b) the big, especially DC, superhero franchises have such loyal followings the studios would literally have to shoot .fecal matter from special fan driven ducts into the faces of the audience before how bad a film was even began to sink in. and even then it would still get at least 80% on IMDB.
Have any of you actually seen it yet? I'd say reserve your judgment for when you yourself see it with your own eyes, but I know that's a losing battle. At the very least, could we cut the name-calling, "everyone who disagrees with me is a retard" bullshit? Is it that hard to just say, "Eh, not my thing, but whatever."
But I can't watch every movie that comes out. If only there was some sort of professional "movie watcher" who could watch this movie for me and then recommend whether I should see it or not. But I'm not sure such a profession exists...
There's no such thing as a professional critic, just someone who gets paid to give his opinion, as opposed to the rest of us, who give ours out for free.
Look Randypan, if you are paid to critique something then you are by definition a professional critic. What you are saying is like insisting that there's no such think a professional plumber, just someone who is paid to fix pipes. And anyway, Randypan, you haven't seen it either. As it stands, we're discussing the available evidence from mostly disinterested professionals rather than the hype of fan boys.
The difference is I'm not passing judgment on this movie without seeing it, whereas you seem to have already made up your mind about it.
Well, Randypan, I probably won't bother seeing it until it turns up on line based on the reviews and the previous poor work done by Zack Snyder in every one of his disjointed movies I have seen. But if I do and I like it I will say so and if I do and I don't I will says so.
But I have seen Sucker Punch, MOS, 300, dawn of the Dead and Watchman. Out of these only Dawn of the Dead really makes much sense from one scene to the next and it's still crap. The others play more or less like the link scenes in game in campaign mode strung together in a vague order that sort of resembles a film. I genuinely think he is an awful filmmaker with no grasp of narrative or character, best suited to COD or something you can skip through to play the game. So I'm not getting my expectations up.
Yeah, you say that, but, trust me, you've already made up your mind.
...going to have to disagree with you there Hand of Onan. 300 while not the most sophisticated movie, is a spot on adaptation of a Frank Miller comic. Watchmen, however wasn't bit still very good to most comic reader's taste. However both pretty much follow the story structure and linear thinking of the source material. If you are saying those movies are bad, you're not saying Zach Snyder is a bad story teller... you're saying Frank Miller and Alan Moore are. And you would be subjectively VERY wrong about that.
"the studios would literally have to shoot .fecal matter from special fan driven ducts into the faces of the audience before how bad a film was even began to sink in"
Sounds like you're calling people stupid to me. Also, you're applying concrete right and wrong to personal taste. Nobody's right or wrong to like or hate what they do. It's all subjective.
Randypan. I never call anyone anywhere a retard. It's an unpleasant and prejudiced slur on people with disabilities.
You may not use the word, but you call people unintelligent for liking something you don't. You're not a friggin' hero.
It's not the same thing at all and I don't call anyone unintelligent anyway ever. I'll say people have bad taste or they are wrong, but never that they are unintelligent. I think it perfectly possible to be wrong without any impediment to any cognitive abilities of any kind. If you can show me where I said anyone is ether stupid or a retard I'll apologise.
I'm not really much of a comic book dude, but as a viewer I sort of think films are a different medium and require a different approach to narrative because they are not the same thing as panels on a page.
IT HAS BEGUN!
Hand of Onan,
The only refutation I would have for you on that front, is that storyboarding for a movie is almost always synonymous with the format of a comic book. When you can use panels of a comic to set scenes and shots for your movie (which is exactly what Zach Snyder did with 300) the movie becomes less what the director wants and more what the director can do to bring the source material alive. Same with Watchmen (though the ending is different).
Inquisitor, fair point about storyboarding. But isn't storyboarding more of a way of plotting the camera set up and edits for a shot or a sequence rather than telling the story. I dunno, to me Zack Snyder's films tend look like a lot of animated storyboards with the connective tissue of the story and character development/removed. I will concede that it's less of a problem with 300 than with MOS or Sucker Punch or even Watchman. Other comic book /graphic novel movies that set up a similar aesthetic, V for Vendetta or Kick Ass for example, take short cuts but sill have a narrative coherence that Snyder's film for me lack.
Randy the fecal matter quip might sound like I'm calling people stupid to you, but to me it's more of comment on conviction. As I said I never call people stupid. I also never call people pretentious.
Conviction? What does that even mean?
Conviction means a firmly held belief or opinion! An article of faith!
Yeah, I know what the word means. Are you saying people who like the movie don't have strong convictions?
Then my job is done here! Captain Dictionary... AWAAAAAY!!!
I'm saying the exact opposite. The belief in the idea of the film overrides the possibility that film might actually just be crap. If you look at what the fans say, critics are not just wrong it's a conspiracy or they misunderstand it or they're all idiots or haven't seen the truth or whatever. It all seems to be based on a fragile belief system that requires other people to submit their critical faculties to the bigger picture of Comic book universes.
So, you've taken what a handful of people you've seen online have said, and assumed everyone who likes that movie is like that? Everything you say, you sound more and more like Hadley, dude.
Well, Randypan, I'm not Josh Hadley or remotely like him. I don't even have a beard and I don't rant. Anyway, regards
Okay, explain to me how your superior, everyone's an asshole except me attitude is any different from Josh's.
Because, I don't actually believe I'm superior to anyone. I also don't really get angry about anything.
Except anyone who likes things you don't. You obviously seem to look down your nose at them.
I don't look down my nose. It's more of a squinty sideways bemused glance.
I think you're confusing "bemusement" with "contempt".
No, definitely bemused. The thing is, you're trying to make this more personal than it is.
I really enjoyed this episode.
I always was a bit confused by the lack of powers Wonder Woman shows. Maybe some excessive strength and that's about it. The famous bracelets reduced to being secret agent-like devices like a grappling hook. But I always did think CLC, Khan, and George had an interesting act going on.
In the late sixties/early seventies, Wonder Woman lost her powers in the comics and was trained in martial arts and various other things. She basically went from a female Superman to being a female James Bond...
Why they changed everything about Wonder Woman instead of just creating a female James Bond character is beyond me. That way you would have Wonder Woman and a female James Bond. They could even team up together in the comics, like Superman and Batman...
And I loved the 11.22.63 reference!
Great review, Bradley. I only wish 1970s television networks had produced more powerless super-hero movies.
However, I also found it disturbing that Wonder Woman worshiped ISIS. Maybe that's why she didn't show up to help Brussels. Maybe that's also why she subordinated herself to men in the movie.
Dear Cinema Snob,
do you consider reviewing a Turkish movie called "3 Dev Adam'' (''Three Mighty Men) as a celebration of Spidey's appearance in the new Captain America film? Please, make it happen.
For some reason when I tried watching the video (clicking the hyperlink or just finally going on youtube it did the same thing there) It would keep pushing me back to your website here, or my youtube history. I am very puzzled as to what could be going on..I finally (to be able to watch the video) copied it quickly and threw it in a watch2gether and it worked there.
