Does the movie audio get warped for anyone else every so often, or is it just me?
No, I see what you mean. 7:03 right?
for me, the audio goes bad when movie clips are playing
Yeah, they begin to sound like distorted versions of friggin' Generation 1 Transformers. Next thing you'll know, Chris Latta will suddenly come back to life and become the regular Starscream again. :P
This is probably simply because Brad haven't used anything outside of Windows Movie Maker to edit his videos and his level of production quality stayed pretty much the same for all these years sheer video editing-wise. The visual quality kind of improved when he changed camera and probably some of his PC hardware, but video editing-wise he's still using Windows Movie Maker or something as similarly simple as that, so the overall level of production quality in the end is pretty obvious. And maybe I'm remembering it wrong, but I think that Brad did say sometime long ago in the past (like 3 or 4 years ago, or so) that he doesn't use more advanced video editing software simply because he doesn't have enough spare time to learn how to use such programs like, for example, Sony Vegas or Adobe Premiere, so he kept on using Windows Movie Maker and such because of the simplicity such video editing software has, Brad didn't really care about image or sound quality of his videos for a long period of time, mainly due to it (somewhat bad/grainy image quality and kind of distorted sound) being the "shtick of the site", resembling that of a quality most of the B-movies and exploitation flicks have which he reviews, but I've noticed that Brad did start giving it a more modern approach to the matter lately.
Your 3rd sentence must be some kind of record.
I've only used Windows Movie Maker once, and that was when I needed a Star Wars text crawl for Turkish Star Wars. In this particular instance, the audio sounded fine when I edited it and watched it, but something glitched during the render. I'm fixing it now.
I think Master Chen here knows a little more about your development process than you do, Brad.
If he's using the blu-ray of Halloween 4 that was released in the limited edition box set of the franchise, then I know what the problem is, because I've noticed it myself whenever I watch it. The audio on that edition of Halloween IV is out of sync.
This was the first Halloween I ever saw, and the entire time I felt like the movie was a nudge to something else (the other movies obviously) and I just couldn't get into it.
I'm pretty sure Danielle Harris is the same height now she was back then.
I'm just surprised that Kathleen Kinmont is still hot 27 years later.
You know you could do 80's Dan without asshat Jake? Just have Mr crabtree do Rob's voice and have him say Rob stole his body and ran off with Mrs Crabtree, but have Dan not realize that Rob was different.
Like the whole 80's body switching thing, and it would be very similar to what that lisping asshole actually did.
Then you could have Mrs. Crabtree come back and say he left her for somebody else because he is a piece of shit, and do a voodoo ritual that doesn't work and bingo Mr crabtree is permanently Rob the Robot.
Brad's gone on record saying that 80's Dan isn't done; he's hoping to make a movie with the character, actually.
I think Brad should use the Japanese version of R.O.B, which is colored different, and say he's R.O.B.'s cousin, C.O.Y.
And, if he's voiced by Dave, maybe have him introduce himself as R.O.B.'s douchier-and-yet-more-trustworthy cousin.
That was a question?
Personally I like the first four Halloween movies and try to watch those every year. Halloween 5 can go to hell.
Having an echo in the movie audio's a bit distracting. Was that a technical error or a means to curtail copyright concerns?
Just out of curiosity, do you still have that Halloween 3 retrospective you did several years ago? I started to watch it when it was posted, but then Blip was giving me fits. Later, Blip stated it had been removed. It would be awesome to watch the rest of that, previous issues not withstanding. I know that's a big request, considering you're usually on the road with conventions and such. But what little I did see of it was interesting.
You know, if I had to choose between watching either Halloween 3 or 4, I'd probably choose 4.
Because while I don't care that Micheal wasn't in 3 (I actually would have liked the anthology route), and thought that 3 had some good effects and soundtrack, I thought that 3 had a really dumb story. Like, dumber than 4's IMO.
Plus, 3 unleashed the Silver Shamrock theme onto the world. Unforgivable.
OMG THAT SAILOR MOON WIG IS AWESOME!!!!!
Yup, Like Halloween 1 and 2 except it sucks.
You forgot to mention McElroy's best known other work - the USA Network original "Wheels of Terror." Tell me how that one is not original?
And yes, I prefer Utah/Illinois to Passadena. That opening is great and I've always loved this sequel. Despite it's many flaws, I thought this one actually surpassed many of the Friday the 13th movies (and I'm a big fan of that series). Even part 5 has its moments. Despite the fact that the Myer's house becomes a mansion in that film, the last half-hour is spectacular.
Here's an article by A.O. Scott in the Times you might find interesting, though maybe you've already seen it.
or Calvary. Zat is ze question.
I just thought I'd check whether the next Cinema Snob episode was up yet, before thinking, "Wait. I don't remember seeing a review of 'Halloween 3'... Did I miss something?" Well, it seems the Snob missed it, too.
Halloween 3 was done on an 80s Dan episode, though I wish he did do it as a Snob episode
I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'd rather see you riffing Event Horizon than the Halloween sequels. You'd have much more fun with it.
Or better yet, a porno spoof of Halloween. I know there's one out there, and I have faith you will find it.
You mean this one?: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Official_Halloween_Parody
Sounds way better than my idea, the ultra-shitty Doctor Who porno spoof "Abducted by the Daleks".
Actually I found H 4,5,6 better than first two. BTW are you going to finish Ilsa and Silent Night series?
Huzzah, a Halloween-themed review. I've been meaning to test out my tolerance for horror movies, so I might try to watch the film before the review.
Maybe they would have done another anthology if Halloween 3 hadn't been so fucking awful. The only good thing about Halloween 3 is the villain, everything else is so bad that it delves into self parody. Sorry, but after Halloween 2 was a follow up to the original, making part 3 an unrelated story was doomed to fail from the start. Maybe as a standalone film it wouldn't be so infamously stupid, but it's still really bad and stupid. I watched Halloween 3 on its own merits, knowing full well in advance it had nothing to do with the others... and it failed on every level (save for the effects and Dan O'Herlihy), poor Tom Atkins just looks annoyed as if he's mentally saying 'God I can't wait to do Night of the Creeps!' Sorry Brad, but Halloween 3 fails, even if you take in the anthology idea, it's still very much not good.
And yeah, how dare a sequel, acknowledge the original and remind you of it.
For me personally this is my favorite Halloween film, it captures the mood and tone in a way I think the others never did. Plus I think this is Donald Pleasence's best performance he ever gave, especially in that gas station scene.
I actually liked 3, but I can see several reasons why most people wouldn't dig it. It's not the flop everyone claims it is either - it just didn't make enough of a profit to suit Moustapha Akkad. I always wondered what it would've been like if Carpenter had directed the first three movies. Granted, the production on part 2 had that Spielberg-Hooper/Poltergeist thing going on, where Carpenter shot additional footage for the movie. But it makes me wonder if Carpenter directing the movies would've made the anthology thing work. Not that Wallace was a bad director (not to mention Carpenter wrote treatments and was producing). But with his name recognition, I wonder if the "no Michael Myers" thing would've sold better.
I don't think Tommy Lee Wallace did that bad given the awful story, hell I thought he did okay on Stephen King's It and Fright Night part II. The problem was the script was originally a tongue-in-cheek mystery film that was aware of the ludicrousness of its story, then the producer (either De Laurentiis or Akkad not sure which) demanded more gore and to make it darker in tone and when the original writer (Nigel Kneale) saw the final product he disowned it and had his name removed.
Never heard of the 'real director debate' but it does feel like a Carpenter story with all the satire going on, like the kind of satire that feels important but at the same time not well thought out like in They Live or In The Mouth of Madness, both are good movies but their satire is a little flawed (like in Madness where if people buy and get scared by a book they automatically believe it over the bible, or in They Live where everyone who is rich is evil and all the poor people should rise up against them)
It wasn't quite a real director thing on part 2, more that Carpenter came in after Rick Rosenthal was done and shot additional scenes because he and the producers thought the story drug (ironically, Carpenter shot more gore scenes in lieu of his usual style). Considering Rosenthal directed Resurrection, perhaps another director should also have been called in for the movie. That's actually what led to the whole Vader-is-my-dad device being introduced. Like I said, I get why people hate the story on this one, I didn't used to like it that well myself. But for the same reasons people dislike this movie, I enjoy it as well as the heavily criticized sequels (sans H20 and Rhymes vs. Myers). I just think the creative liberties made them intriguing, albeit out in left field.
As far as Fright Night Part II, one of the best sequels of the 80s. Wallace outdid himself. I can't believe it took this long to get a legitimate remaster.
Fright Night Part II got a remaster?! When and where? I need it. I will be forever in your debt if this is real.
My error, I could've swore when I was looking at the Scream Factory list the other day, they showed a new cover for part 2. What I actually saw was a listing for that Twilight Time bootleg on Blu-Ray, the one that was taken from some HD broadcast. Still, at least there's a better copy out there in widescreen than that shitty 4:3 DVD from ten years ago.
It's okay, Fright Night Part 2 seems like something they'd do. I mean, they have got to do a double feature of Fright Night and Fright Night part 2. I'll forgive Scream Factory since they're remastering Tales From The Crypt: Demon Knight. I hope someday they'll do Fright Night 2, I mean they're giving crap like Garbage Pail Kids a remaster why not underrated gems like Fright Night Part II or The Changeling?
I watched this video solely to see how you would explain skipping Season of the Witch. I was not disappointed.
Great review, Snob. Glad you re-uploaded it to fix the audio glitches, too.
I call bullshit on the title card Brad, you are not taller than Donald Pleasance or Danielle Harris. XD
Having been to the same conventions as her, I can vouch that I am indeed taller than Danielle Harris.
Danielle Harris is only six inches taller than Peter Dinklage.
You have? Lucky guy, she seems awesome.
All Halloween 4 is to me is it's when Michael gave up his William Shatner mask for one of Commander Data...or possibly Lore.
So.. 80's Dan has been retconned from the Snobiverse?
I'm depressed that I have to wait till 2019 for the review of Halloween Resurrection.
All this talk about gun-toting redneck mobs just makes me want to re-watch Clive Barker's Nightbreed.
That, or my brain has activated an auto-defense that thinks about a better movie when faced with such a terrible one.
Excellent review as usual. Although I couldn't help but hope for an 80s Dan cameo at the end with the Snob and he exchanging words over Halloween III.
Wither 80s Dan?
I'll admit Season of the Witch has flaws but I find it to be very creepy, thanks in part to the Silver Shamrock jingle which I love. But without Dan O'Herlihy it wouldn't be as memorable, he's more intimidating than Myers. Oh well, at least we got Trick r Treat. 4's not bad but if Loomis wasn't in it I'd have ignored it.
Although I will say the next installment should've been about the crazed preacher & whatever he was hunting.
Please please please tell me you said "calvary" instead of "cavalry" as part of your character.
They should have gone with Terrence Malick as the director.
Also, I think this series fairly conclusively proves that guns don't kill people.
I kind of like Halloween 4. You can definitely tell the script was churned out in under two weeks, but I think the directing and cinematography was good enough to bring a little something extra to many of the scenes.
I hope the last line means you're planning on giving us the Halloween 5 review as quickly as the filmmakers rushed the actual movie out. It's a bad movie, and the worst kind of bad movie (a boring one), but if it means getting the Halloween 6 review even sooner, all the better. That one is even worse than 5, but it's such a mess it's kind of fascinating.
At least Halloween 6 tried, maybe a little too hard, but they tried. With 5 it's kinda obvious that aside from some of the actors they didn't care.
I remember Hadley whining about the palm trees in the first movie but I'm honestly hoping he doesn't like Halloween 4 over the 3rd Halloween...
Really? No one is going to comment on when he said "A Friday the 13th movie with Jason as not the killer"? Anyone?
Think that was meant to be ironic
First time seeing this show I take it? Welcome to my site =)
Isn't the lady in the ambulance with Michael the one from the toy store in Silent Night, Deadly Night?
Eh, I kind of like the halloween remake. Most of it was just Eh, but I like the fact that it shows the build up to Michael's "first" murder(s).
Brad, please bring back 80's Dan. I loved that show.
Some of the older archived videos of 2009 were brought over from the youtube account before thecinemasnob.com was created, so please forgive the lesser video quality of such as some did not transfer well.
