"The dragon's fire burns hot motherfucker!"
Brad you are made of distilled awesome, made my day with that line alone. Awesome review as always!
The stun gun from Shadows of the Empire. Woah, there's a reference I didn't expect. :-P
Never thought I'd ever see the Snob do a Godzilla film. Godzilla's not much of an exploitation series, and sadly the Heisei series (Godzilla 1985 to Vs. Destroyer) while dark enough to look at they're unfairly hated by all casual Godzilla series.
Still, I'm as excited as you are for the upcoming film. Here's hoping it's not campy like most of the Showa era!
Are you serious? As a lifelong fan I would've thought the Heisei is the favorite! Yes, I too liked the Showa series. . .when I was f*cking 6! But come on, Heisei has some of the best monsters & crazy premises ("Godzilla vs. Biolantte/King Ghidora"), & I love the "Gozilla 1985" vhs starting out with that "Bambi meets Godzilla" short, it kind of set the stage for his return to being a villain/ tragic force of nature. In fact, before my 1st viewing of the new one I kept hoping right before it started we'd get a similar short: "King Kong meets Godzilla". Sorry Kong fans.
Are yo also including the Millennium period, cause they're pretty much the same style and feel as the Heisei period.
I've watched my fair share of Godzilla movies, (including the embarrassing "Son of Godzilla") yet I haven't seen this one. I didn't know there was a movie where they actually gave the little one a voice over! Really awful movie, but a hilarious review.
Will be watching the new movie soon. After that, I'm looking forward to your review :) (Damn, I hope that movie holds up...!)
James Rolfe's least favorite Godzilla film of them all! I'm surprised you didn't show the part where the kid humps the hood of a car for no reason. You know, for kids!
I do believe the Nostalgia Critic already ripped on the 1998 Godzilla film a couple of years ago, Snob.
........that was a joke =)
Didn't you say that the 1998 Godzilla film wasn't that bad before, Brad?
The 98 Godzilla is a bad example of a Godzilla movie, largely because the monster isn't much like Godzilla at all, but as a movie simply about a giant monster attacking New York City, I actually find the movie very entertaining. The worst part about it is that it's called Godzilla.
There's a lot of really good things about it that get overlooked. I love how dark looking the film is, it's constantly either thunder storming outside or overcast, which blends in well with the effects (that have a mixture of some very good practicals. Some of the characters are fun, ie Jean Reno and Hank Azaria. And the action set pieces are really well done, such as the helicopter chases through the mazes of buildings, and the Madison Square Garden sequence was a lot of fun.
If it were called ANYTHING else, it wouldn't have gotten as much hate. I'm not saying it would be well liked, but it wouldn't have been received with such venom. If you just think of it as a Zilla movie (which the monster was renamed in Godzilla Final Wars), it's not THAT bad. And it's hardly the worst film with the word Godzilla in it.
Normally, I'd agree with you and say it wasn't terrible movie on its own.
But I have a personal vendetta against Roland Emmerich, so I have to immediately admit that it's one of the worst movies ever.
Plus, I like the Siskel and Ebert review better than the movie itself.
RiffTrax is also doing a kickstarter to riff the 98 Godzilla.
https://www.youtubkickstarter?? What are their costs? $2 for the DVD
Episode kickstarters have became the biggest scam on the internet.
WTF are you talking about?
It isn't a scam.
...explain to me what exactly they need to raise funds for in order to riff on a film, please. Because I don't fully understand. The cost of producing a rifftrax track is practically nonexistent.
Obviously you did the very minimum amount of research and went to their page, right? No, of course not.
Conclusion: it's a huge scam and they are pocketing your money.
LloydFan should've been more specific. RiffTrax wants to do a RiffTrax Live event (where they riff a movie live in front of an audience in a theater and broadcast it to movie theaters across the country) with Godzilla (1998) as the movie riffing feature. In order to be able to do a nationwide live event with this movie, they have to pay Sony (the creators and American license owners of Godzilla '98) the licensing fee. Sony is game for the idea (RiffTrax did a similar Kickstarter funded live event with another Sony movie, Starship Troopers) so all that's needed is the money. Thus the reason for the Kickstarter. Not a scam, people. Btw, the Kickstarter funded Starship Troopers RiffTrax Live event was great.
I'm calling bullshit on this one. You should not have to pay money to watch someone make fun of a movie for you live or not.
If its live and nationwide, no it isn't bullshit. Because unless the studio gets explicitly paid for the event, the event would be seen as streaming a movie to millions of people for free, even with the Riffing on top of it. Which is considered to be massively illegal.
There's shit about how you can't have showings like that for anything more than a small group of people. Nationwide is out of the question. The only way they can do it and not end up getting sued is to pay off Sony the amount of money they deem worthy for such an enormous crowd.
Its the same reason you pay to go to a movie theater. Which is really what it is. A nationwide, online movie theater. Just with a different payment process where all the payment is done beforehand, and after payment is received, anyone can come and go from the theater as they please.
Minya is what Frodo sees when he puts on the One Ring. They swapped it out for a flaming eyeball whispering the black tongue of Mordor because it led to fewer nightmares amongst audience members.
I was so disappointed when Minya was the version of "Baby Godzilla" used in Final Wars.
The should have used either Little Godzilla or G Jr.
The movie was sorely in need of something Fast, Ted Fast.
The Super Mario Bros. 2 music when they were batting the rock back and forth cracked me up :p
I grew up with this movie, so as terrible as it is, I can't bring myself to hate him.
Minilla sure is terrifying though.
A Super Mario Bros. 2 AND a Banjo-Tooie reference? man you're on fire.
also since you mentioned Hedorah. The American DVD cutting this out of the dub track is criminal
Terror of Mechagodzilla soooo did not deserve to go down as the movie that killed Showa Godzilla. And this movie is the reason why.
You're right. That honor should go to Godzilla Vs. Megalon. (Even though Megalon himself is a pretty cool monster.)
i appreciate the Mario 2 reference
Seriously Snob, not even a rip-off or a spoof, your just trying to direct attention to yourself by watching a godzilla when the remakes coming out. Shame on you
Yeah, what's the deal Snob?! You think just because this is your own site that you put time and effort into that you can make videos about anything you want? You must conform to my preconceived notions of what you're about.
Seriously. What´s the deal with him? How can he dare to make references to other projects he is doing on his site? What´s next? Ads for a self produced DVD? Wearing a White Castle Cap in his vids?
That is why I prefer quality cable tv. It´s free of annoying ads for other shows, crossovers and subliminal messages...

A reference to Clawglip from Super Mario Bros. 2? Well done sir. I think any of the game reviews have ever made that reference.
Dude, you don't know how to be funny, you just sit there flapping your mouth hoping some poor soab will find your videos funny, some call it niche, I call it shitty internet critic.
Haha! What a witty retort, young sir! Surely your grammar and detailed criticism make you talk of the town in social circles.
I'd actually give this movie a chance. It looks hilarious enough. Plus, there's a chance Godfrey Ho borrowed the footage of this for one of his movies anyway.
You missed a chance for a Langoliers reference @ 6:23
Is that The Village of the Giants theme song?
That was clearly a donkey ejaculating, Not a walrus, geez.
Barkley vs. Barney? Screw that. Godzilla vs. Barkley. That actually happened:
And in comic form, no less:
Originally, the 98 movie was suppose to have come out in 94 which had an entirely different script and Godzilla looking like Godzilla. Also it would have had Godzilla fight a monster called the Gryphon, but TOHO was not pleased that Tri-Star was creating an OC monster and wanted them to use the already existing monsters if Tri-Star ever should need another monster. Tri-Star told TOHO to go fuck themselves because buying another monster from TOHO is too damn expensive. Time passed and more money was being "wasted" on the look of the monsters, storyboarding, etc. and Tri-Star decided to fire all the film crew and asked Roland Emmerich and Dean Devlin to do the movie.
There is your trivia for tonight, Brad.
do more Godzilla movies
The opening theme to Death Proof? I guess it fits?
It's the opening theme to Village of the Giants.
I remember this one... Yeah... I don't think I cared much for the subplot with the kid when I saw it when I was youunger.
Loved the MST3K reference. made my decision on which classic misty to watch next much easier!
Still no Pulgasari? I'm dissappointed.
And you're even teasing us with a reference to it >:(
Hey Snob! I've only got one question for you. Why do you still have that "Moment by Moment" poster on the wall behind you?
Because every film is somehow related to Moment by Moment.
Cause Moment by Moment kicks ass.
I can't really hate this movie as much as I used to. Director Ishiro Honda was, believe it or not, trying to get out what he felt was an important message with this film. The message that Japan is losing it's way, and old traditions are fading. Particularly the time honored tradition of grandparents tending to the children while both parents work. Though even Honda-sensei's brilliant directing couldn't save a turd script.
So why have you stopped using Believe it or Not in all of your Snob episodes?
You should watch "Earth Defence Widow" it's a Godzilla-esque sex parody.
What a perfect video to watch considering 50% of all Blip ads I get to see these days are the same Godzilla trailer over and over again.
Holy crap, that plot sounds exactly like "The Adventures of Galgameth", whose writer was the director of Pulgasari o_O
Anyways, are there any Godzilla porno spoofs?
Thanks to the 1997 version, EVERYBODY knows that Godzilla is a female.
This whole business of referring to Godzilla as a "he" is very offensive.
They're two different characters.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bIcExdpsEcQ proves it.
There is a Kaiju Porn movie called Giant Heroine Sigma Lady.
Isn't that more of an Ultraman spoof. Well, I'd take that over having the hot girl inside a Godzilla costume.
Yeah, it is, but the Ultrawoman gets fucked by a Kaiju.
Does this mean we'll get your review of Turkish Star Wars when Episode VII comes out?
I'm pretty sure he already did that one.
Has there ever been a Turkish Godzilla?
If there is, I'm guessing there's a lot of talk'n and fuck'n. ;)
Hey Brad, did you know Godzilla, King Ghidorah and Gigan showed up in a TV show called Zone Fighter? Gigan was even killed by the title hero.
James Rolfe did a review of it.
Say what you will about the '98 Godzilla but I liked it
that's a lot of fish...
Well, at least Manilla doesn't get fucked or disco dance making it better than the ET pornos and Nukie.
Man, I really hope the new Godzilla doesn't turn out as another Dark Knight Rises, getting us all excited with the trailer and "reviews" and then delivering something else. My brother wants to take me to see this next week and we don't really ever do things together, I don't want it to be horrible.
You know, I remember watching this a lot as a kid...I have no clue why considering I owned better Godzilla movies but then again I had a terrible taste in movies as a kid.
This was a really funny episode. Probably the most I've laughed since the ET porno Demo Reel!
I have to say, I'm pretty excited about the new zilla movie. I'm not going in with a pen and paper, nor with a standard based on the majority of nonsensical Godzilla movies made (they're fun, but come on). By what I've seen and heard, it shares the tone of the original in terms of reflections of war and mass destruction, so I got me some high hopes.
i got back from Godzilla '14
and no spoilers.....but its going to be all of your number 1s for this year.
its one of the best movies ive seen since Dredd, and that includes pacific rim.
Yep, agree. Great movie. Also, no after credits scene.
From time to time I watch this with my friends and riff on it. God damn we hate this movie.
I cannot believe Brad missed on such good opportunity to make a very obvious "Mako is in this movie? WTF?" joke.
HAHA! Props for the MST3K reference. <3
It's not really a good "Godzilla film", but it's a much better FILM than anybody here is giving it credit for, as it captures a child's perspective accurately and artfully and uses the stock footage very well to that effect. Here's a review that expands upon this:
As much as I like this, I think Gamera would have been an easier target for the Snob as opposed to Godzilla... but that's just me.
Copyright roman numerals say 1971, not 1969!
Great work as always, Snobby. . Dying to see you take a crack at Menehem Golan's utterly craptacular 1980 WTF? disasterpiece, "The Apple".
I'm glad they decided to make Godzilla's child cute in Godzilla Vs Spacegodzilla... I'm also glad they didn't have him talk.
But hey, there's no such thing as a bad Godzilla movie in my book... except the 1998 one.
I wouldn't call this a bad movie, it looks entertaining and honestly the only thing I find creepy about it is how smooth and feminine the kids legs are: and why are they all wearing shorts? Are they trying to show off their thin girlish legs? I guess that explains that one weird kid in pokemon who keeps talking about his shorts; maybe that's a trend in japan.
I like the review though, honestly I agree that the talking dinosaur thing is stupid; I'm glad that in the 1990's Japanese films they turned to just having female psychics in every movie.
Now you HAVE to do Pulgasari, Brad
LMAOOOOOO at that baby Godzilla voice
Does anyone know the address you send things to for Brad Tries ???
Kind of disappointed you didn't make a black love joke when you talked about checking cars and finding dead bodies and fucking
"Freddy's Dead" stupid? How dare you, sir! (sarcasm)
Actually, to that raped & fecal showered corpse wearing Freddy's sweater of a movie's credit, they did wait until the very end to show clips from better movies.
Ah, the slow-mo gyrations of the "Village of the Giants" dancing theme...thanks for the memories Cinema Snob.
I do realize that This flick was made for very, very young audience but c'mon Sir Jones, even you have to admit that kids were watching way more Destroy all Monsters or even Godzilla vs. Monster zero, and this was one of the first Godzilla films my parents felt me with when I was 6, and I was watching way more Godzilla vs King Ghidorah and Biolantte, and that shit was pretty badass and I even went out of my way to buy them on DVD, which I must say God bless Ebay for it... This film on the other hand...well lets say it was the first and only time I used a shotgun on after I told it to look at the flowers and KABOOM!!! never though Buckshot was too extreme until I used it on a VHS copy of Godzilla's Revenge, which that title did confuse me...what exactly is he avenging? The fact that this film sucks and tried to send a lawsuit against the screen play writer...seriously did they consider the kids of that time was more fixated on the movies that kids weren't suppose to be watching? because I'm sure they did see Rodan, which I have to admit made me squamish because seeing bugs getting eating alive by a Giant Pteradon also made me think what if I was in those worms position?! Let's just say I was raised on B-movies and Godzilla had always played a major role in my life, and basically was what I always made time to watch after coming home from school. OH and when I did see Godzilla 98, let's say I never put it in the VHS again...because now I felt it would've made a better remake for Beast from 20'000 fathoms, because they both destroyed ships and managed to swim all the way to the shore of New York City and it would've been much, much more interesting to see the Rhedosaurus making a nest in Madison Square that way they could have shot him to death with conventional artillery without exposing themselves to the bacteria in its blood, serious that was the best remake I ever had! I dare someone to make a better one! Except you, Brad because I better much can guess your plot would be better than mine. So yeah Love the review! plus love the New Godzilla, even though I admit it had a few issues mostly on the human side of the story...well except Bryan Cranston, he's always done great roles no matter the character dynamics he merges himself with.
I just got done watching the Japanese version of this film during my Godzilla-thon for the upcoming US release of Shin Godzilla (aka Godzilla Resurgence).
4:37- No, even the subtitles are annoying, because they go "Eeeeeeee!" Seriously.
Nice job with The Dark Knight Rises joke.
In the original Japanese version, Minilla's voice sounds like a child's, but here in the dubbed version, he sounds like Barney the Dinosaur.
I also like the idea of Godzilla being a very stern father.
It's nice to see a review on the 2nd worst Godzilla movie.
Some of the older archived videos of 2009 were brought over from the youtube account before thecinemasnob.com was created, so please forgive the lesser video quality of such as some did not transfer well.
