*Possible spoiler warning for Friday the 13th, if that's actually needed*
Friday the 13th really is a well-made and, in parts, well-acted movie. It's certainly better than a lot of slasher movies, especially ones made nowadays. Here's a small problem with it, though: it's not scary at all, and it's kinda stupid. It has cheap jump-scares on the level of Saw II, and yet, none of them are effective. True, that's not what horror is about - but the movie fails even at building any atmosphere of dread, because every action of the killer is so predictable that you can tell almost anything that's going to happen well in advance.
This movie still could've worked as a thriller if it were smarter, and it's not that stupid, but it's stupid enough to break any tension. The characters are likable enough that you don't want them to die, but the movie doesn't build them up enough to make you scared of that - honestly, likable as they may be, it's kinda hard to tell them apart. I don't think I remember any of their names. The fact that Jason is not the killer could have been a clever twist, except essentially what the movie tells us is "hey, that one character you know nothing about? He's not the killer! It's that other character you know nothing about!"
I don't hate the movie, but yeah, it's a big pile of anything. I don't think it's worth anyone's time. And yes, the cinema snobs were right on this one - Halloween is a far better movie (they also hated that one at first, one should say).
I always thing perspective is important when talking about films...especially cheap, low budget horror films.
Back when this film was made and released, it was a VERY effective horror film. It was still partly "fresh" back then.
Looking at the film now, it's so tame you wonder how this spawned a successful franchise.
Jason not being the killer is not a twist at all. Again, perspective is the key. This was a stand alone film at the time, there was no Jason at all other than being used for a jump scare at the end.
Going into this film back then, no one even knew who Jason was, never mind expecting him to be the killer...so it's not a twist at all.
In terms of the key three "classic" horror franchises. Those being Halloween, Friday and Nightmare.
I think Nightmare had the best opening flick, but I think Friday had the better overall "franchise"...and it all started with this one film.
I've been to the camp where Friday the 13th was filmed. It's a Boy Scout Camp called No-Be-Bo-Sco located outside Blairstown New Jersey. My dad (who's been a scoutmaster for 25 years) has heard from some people at council that the camp was chosen because one of the people involved with the production (not sure who but it might have been the director/producer Sean S. Cunningham) was a scout and had been to the camp may times. They shot the film in September after summer camp ended in but unfortunately for the camp they charged the production a flat price for renting it out so No-Be-Bo-Sco wasn't credited in the film nor are they owed any royalties.
However from what I remembered (though I haven't been there in 14 years) they're very proud of being in the film. They even have the original Camp Crystal Lake sign hanging on a wall in the trading post.
I think i'm seriously the only person on the planet that actually likes scream
I have a love hate relationship with Scream, not just as a stand alone film but as a franchise.
It did have some great moments and it being "meta" was interesting. But at the same time, it was a one trick pony by being so "meta". Make fun of horror clichés...and then follow up said clichés. Therefore negating the point of bringing up clichés to begin with.
It kind of works...but then again it does not work too and became stale fast.
Even right up to the last instalment. I liked elements of it. Playing up to the now "digital" age, the comments on the remakes, etc.
Interesting...but again not interesting enough.
I love Wes as a writer (though he did not do the Scream franchise) and a director. Probably my fave horror writer director.
I do feel Wes not being the writer of Scream was it's main problem as I feel Wes could have done a FAR better job of it.
Wes can do great "meta" horror, see Wes Craven's New Nightmare...
Scream just felt a bit "flat". The "meta" idea became stale even before the first film had ended.
hmm... why don't they just kill the mother by setting the water on fire?
Oh wait.... you can't set water on fire...
this is one of my favorite films of all time. i loved it as a kid and i still love it. i think it was effective at the time as well. i can't say i love it more than halloween or vice versa cause i love both films.
they are each their own thing. is the film less effective now than it was than? hell yeah it is but that's ok with me. cause there no doubt are horror films better made and acted. and as it's been said at least you want the characters to live in it. you care about them.
i actually enjoy the Scream series as well. the 4th one is a decent film but not great. it took me a long time to like part 3. honestly if they had made only 1 of them or even 2 that would have been fine with me. i like the idea that it's aware of itself and yet totally does what it's out against. and yes that has been done far better too.
but i enjoy that series cause i don't take it serious at all. i do think the Nightmare films are better though Wes Craven's anyways. but even that series has the 6th one which is the worst one.
that series is also another one that never pisses me off on how freddy ended up like it does so many people. but hey this is just one guy's opinion.
Um, Snob? You forgot to mention this "serviceable" slasher DETHRONED EMPIRE STRIKES BACK!!!
Gene Siskel: The Original Troll.
Seriously, giving out the home address of people you don't like so they'll be harassed by like-minded individuals is a well-known troll tactic.
I'm sorry, but this film is really boring.
Sadly Betsy Palmer passed away on 29thMay.
