hey Brad are you gonna see Tusk, Would love to hear your opinion on it
p.s damn you blip
It's still not playing around him since it's a limited release. I think he said last week he would see it if it comes to Springfield.
I saw "Tusk" earlier this week. It's only being shown in 600 theaters. The closest theater that it was showing was in New York City an hour away from where I live.
Perhaps Brad will review it once it's released on demand.
Like Brad has time to answer questions from his fans
Hey Brad, Are you going to see the new Jimi Hendrix movie with Andre 3000? I heard it's really good.
I am a fan of the TV series of The Equalizer, and this movie bares ZERO resemblance to it. Edward Woodward portrayed an ex-intelligence agent who willingly uses his skills to help people in need where the law cannot. He was sophisticated, refined, and financially well off as well as rather tough and intimidating. He didn't work in a hardware store, had no OCD issues, did nothing with a stop watch, but he did have a son, portrayed by William Zabka. In the series, Robert McCall is constantly entangled with his intelligence operative past, and regularly employs a team of agents to help him in his cases.
Fuqua said decided to get the rights to The Equalizer so they could make a film that bares no resemblance to it. Burn Notice or Person of Interest are more like The Equalizer than this film is. I own the first two seasons of the show on DVD, and it's an excellent show. Honestly believe you would enjoy it nicely, Brad.
I concur. I used to love this show when I was a kid. I hadn't seen it since the late 80s when, one day, I was dubbing some home movies off of Beta onto DVD-R and stumbled upon an episode my dad had taped. I had forgotten how badass the intro was. It was darker than a lot of the action-dramas of that era too.
I kept seeing the Equalizer trailer at the cinema and it just looked like a remake of the most generic 80's vigilante film ever (The Exterminator maybe?).
So the box trolls are basically Solid Snake? XD
And now I'm gonna go eat some pancakes.
Spetsnaz, Voyska spetsialnogo naznacheniya, translated: Special Purpose Forces. Jake is right, Spetsnaz as one of most highly regarded special forces in the world, and Russian military training doesn't have many of "limits" or "regulations" that we in the US have, so they are tough fucks.
Spetsnaz is a shortening for "Spetsialnoe Naznachenie" (Специальное Назначение), which literally translates as "Special Task".
Also, the fighting style Sambo (not a dance, but a type of a fighting technique used by the many professional fighters of MMA, UFC and etc) is a shortening for "Samooborona" (Самооборона). which was created inside the Spetsnaz and is literally translated as "Self-defense". During Soviet Union times it was used purely inside the army forces only, and was a highly hidden technique which was taught only to a very little number of people, the exceptionally outstanding soldiers who overcame exceptionally hard training. Later, after Soviet Union dissolved and Russian Federation was established, Sambo's secrets were uncovered to the general public and now it's being taught in almost every decent martial arts school in Russia AND abroad (it's quite popular in Brazilian martial arts schools, for example).
The original, army-only version of Sambo was more like a CQC, rather than just a fist/leg-fighting technique, but when it came out open to the civilian public, they've toned it down quite a bit, understandably. These days they still teach the full (no-pansies) version inside both the Spetsnaz and the regular army, though.
Though my memory is hazy about the Equalizer i still remember bits of it and i can say the movie bares no resemblance.
If you wanna know what the show was like its a cross between James Bond, Death Wish and a grown up version of the A-team.
Edward Woodward is a absolute badass in the show as a ex intelligence agent who takes on cases usually without pay. He has his ex buddies from the agency to help him out but usually the guy can kick ass without them.
Its a really good show and one i may go back and rewatch.
The "introducing" credit for Isaac Hempstead-Wright was a bit confusing, since he also plays Bran Stark on Game of Thrones. Maybe this is his first film? I'm too lazy to look it up.
I have new for you, Brad & Jake: so far it looks like I'm the only true Russian person here, and I'm neither a mafioso nor I'm a typical "potato-eater" (BTW FYI - that is a stereotype used for Belarus people, not for Russians. The More You Know). So there!
i'll see anything with Moretz in it. i've seen her as a runaway twice, a vampire, a ghost, an assassin, and out adorablying Hugo, i sure the hell am not going to miss her as a hooker! LOL! totally sold!
and i'll probably catch Box Trolls next week. it's the only kid's movie to come out in a while. so that should do pretty well.
I imagine the equalizer will be in and out of theaters. I never saw even ONE trailer for this thing. and i see a new movie every weekend at my local 5 dollar matinee.
although with that said; i kind'a wish this movie was about that teenager hooker, taking revenge on the Russian Mafia...
I don't get why The Boxtrolls is getting worse ratings than Coraline and ParaNorman on RT.
Dumb and Dumber II is gonna suck.
Dumb and Dumber II is going to be better than Dumb and Dumberer.
Will the PanJakes be on a Brad Tries episode?
All this talk of Panjakes and Wahlburgers makes me want to go to brunch at my local extremely ornery burger sports bar on Sunday and listen to more Doug Loves Movies podcasts.
Wait, Training Day had a plotline where the Russian mob after Denzel Washington. WTF! Antwone Fuqua must have some problems with the Russian mob!
I am coming after you American Jake. How dare you not understand the Russian forces! Fuck you, and your PanJakes!
Даже близко не подошёл. %)
FWIW I'd be looking forward to Paddington WAY before Annie.
And, FWIW, I LOVED Jake's rants! The Equalizer has some PRIMO material! BRAVO, Jake!
Silly Jake, it's not "Goblin dialogue", they're trolls. Who ever heard of goblins being in a movie with "Troll" in it's title?
I now feel as though I am properly equipped to see The Equalizer.
It has nine thousand endings, as though it's The Lord of the Rings. Got it.
I'll refrain from hesitantly standing up to leave when I think the movie is over, as I sometimes do.
I saw Boxtrolls today and this marks the first time where I saw a movie before I've seen the video here discussing said movie. After Coraline and ParaNorman, I just couldn't be a cheap-ass and wait for Netflix anymore, I made a little side-budget specifically to see this movie (thankfully, college textbooks weren't particularly expensive this semester).
The moment I saw the "I regret so many things" scene in the movie, my IMMEDIATE thought was "oh, I have gotta here them talking about them possibly fucking!", and I even had Brad's tone of voice figured out in my head, and it is EXACTLY what I got here! Big thanks for making a fun movie even more enjoyable.
I especially loved Winnie, the little girl. This is probably what my daughter would be like if I had a kid. She was such a morbid, developing gorehound of a child and it was in a way the most (non-visually) deliciously disturbing thing in the whole movie. "Did they eat your parents? Did they *let* you watch!!?? Uh, I mean, did they MAKE you watch". She was so eager to see blood and bones and bursty bits and was so disappointed when she didn't get them, and she was so HAPPY talking about the Mister Creosote experience, my god, this is why I love these movies over the wimpy pixar or dreamworks stuff. Not only do I get much better character design and wonderful stop-motion animation, but the *content* is just so much more...."meaty", as opposed to the cheapened artificial sweetener-plagued types of kids films.
Death by cheese. I don't think I could have asked for a better ending. On a less morbid note, yes, Oil Can was goddamn adorable.
Good review, see you in 2 hours
You should review TUSK. It seems to be right up your alley.
You two are fucking adorable together, I can't stand it.
As someone who was born in Boston and went to the same high school as Affleck and Damon, I feel obligated to inform you that they are called Flapjakes.
Hey, they missed out on having it set in a real cheese named town. Cheesequake NJ.
Dude, next week is also the new Nic Cage Christian movie, it's a Nic Cage film, you're contractually obligated to watch that!
Sorry, Brad, but Troll Hunter is the best troll movie of all time.
Not Troll 2? (despite them being goblins? ;)
Seriously though Troll Hunter is AWESOME.
Something tells me that Tusk isn't going to Springfield, since it didn't do well the first weekend (Mallrats did better and that was a flop back in the day) and might not expand to other cities.
Yikes! Too bad I've been hearing some good things about it. I'm a long time Kevin Smith fan, I hoped it would do well!
Hey Brad, the kid in Boxtrolls is Bran Stark from Game of Thrones.
Yeah?! Well at least Chloe Grace Moretz probably TRIED to play a Russian, unlike that boring monotone bitch Scarlett Johansen! It's the same as Watchmen, a once in a lifetime movie (possibly) & every character is cast very well/ perfect, then instead of finding a good actress they just get a pretty face lacking talent! Chloe is awesome! I went into Carrie knowing if nothing else she & Julianne Moore would be good, & they were.
Plus I didn't mind the film, for a remake I've seen worse (Nightmare on Elm Street).
Nope. If she's playing a Russian in The Equalizer, she speaks with her regular accent, not even attempting a Russian accent. She was good in the movie, but if she was supposed to be Russian, no, it wasn't happening.
She was barely even in the movie. she book ends it. and that's about it. I don't think she was meant to be russian. just a girl who was a hooker.
That's why I said *if* she was playing a Russian.
"Boring monotone bitch Scarlett Johansson"? I admit her acting is very subdued most of the time, but you've CLEARLY never saw "Her". That movie's damn good, and she is definitely NOT monotone in it. Otherwise, the movie would have been absolutely horrendous.
Matthew Goode as Ozymandias was terrible casting.
Understood. So apparently, neither were told they were supposed to be playing Russian characters, fair enough. I still hate her. Speaking of recasting, I'm used to being in the minority on comic book movie topics (Jack vs. Heath, "Batman" vs. "Dark Knight", etc. . .) but Edward Norton vs. Mark Ruffalo & HE wins?! WTF?! Please explain. . . . . . anybody.
You drunk again bro? Bring it in. We'll get ya some coffee and get ya all fixed up. Hope you're a Styx man.
Edward Norton and Mark Ruffalo both made great Hulks for the movies they were in. Norton wouldn't of worked in the Avengers. Ruffalo would not of worked in Incredible Hulk.
they might be the same character, but both played their version of the hulk, way too different.
Ok, appreciate the input but not much of an answer, also I'm specifically talking about their acting as Dr. Banner not hulk.
Both Hulks were ridiculously awesome, not problem there!
What I meant was for me Norton (hell, Eric Bana for that matter) looked more like what I think of whenever I think Dr. Banner than Ruffalo. You know, scrawny, brainy & having the traditional appearance of a scientist. Acting skill aside, Ruffalo's a big guy, as tall/buff looking as Cap or Thor. Had Norton been there you'd wonder what's with the little guy? What's he gonna do? (which is akin to when you saw "Predators" & thought Tofu Grace! What's HE doing here? Minus the "ugh!" feeling knowing it's. . . . . . Tofu Grace)
Eh, to each his own.
I fail to see how LOOKS have anything to do with acting talent.
I personally think they both did an excellent job as Banner, for their own unique flavor that the movies were going for.
by hulk, i meant banner, not the cartoon blob on the screen they called hulk. naturally. Ruffalo gave a great performance, and worked really well playing off Downy Jr and the others.

It's set a few years after the Hulk movie, continually changing back and forward has altered his bio-chemistry and he's bulkier. There, hand-waved. They got the "oh, this scrawny guy's no threat" schtick out of the way in the Norton movie, too; did we need it again?
We get it you hate Heath's Joker. You don't have to mention that on every comment board.
I guess you're right, I concede on the Hulk issue.
As for Ms./Mrs. Sara, I feel like Norman Bates. I don't hate Heath's version, I saw Dark Knight 4 times & I was mesmerized each time. True, I'm not pleased with his grungy appearance, but that doesn't effect his acting, as Mr. IDK will attest to. But I hate what it's become, this nearly mythic/Godlike tour de force that NOTHING can ever beat. It was pretty damn good, nothing more nothing less. Worst of all is when someone says "nobody should ever play the Joker again, Heath was perfect!" To that say with all due respect, Jesus, it's not he died for our sins or something! But you're right as well, Sara. Please forgive me,
I hope Brad has seen Coraline. In my opinion, it's better than Paranormoan, but only by a little.
Oh Jake, you can't keep being mad at Brian for the Smurfs remark.
That's just how Brian is, he just likes whipping people when they're down.
I am hungry and could really use some panjakes.
Brad, do you even lift, bro? Your little noodly arms are pretty gay, bro. I tell ya watcha need to do, bro. Go buy yourself a set of adjustable dumbbells and an exercise mat and get yo swoll on. Get those pansy-ass beta male arms ripped with relatively few dollars spent and no gym membership. Just pop in some MST3K DVDs to keep ya from getting bored while you're doing it, and in a few months, you'll be a shredded sexual tyrannosaurus, just like me, broski.
Bunch of slack jawed faggots around here. . . . . . on this comments page!
These comments will make you a god-damn sexual tyrannosaurus, just like me.
These were great "Midnight Screenings." Your review of "The Boxtrolls," is one of my favorite positive movie reviews because I liked the movie too, and I loved how both of you were into talking about it, with little to no tangents or digressing. The review of "The Equalizer." was awesome for Jake's "Lets Be Cops and Dumb & Dumber To," angry rant, alone!! I replayed it over and over because I couldn't stop laughing.
All I can say about The Equalizer is that when it got to the hardware store fight scene, all I can think of is how this movie went straight to an R rated version of Home Alone.
A fresh PanJake would be so tasty. all warm from the simmering anger
om nom nom nom
No disrespect meant to Jillian, Dave, the Brians, Sarah, etc., but IMO Brad and Jake make the best Midnight Screenings team. Every time they pair up I find myself laughing hysterically at their inane banter, whether it's about bros or mackerels.
Even though I like the other reviewers, I'm personally quite happy that the majority of recent reviews have been Brad and Jake team-ups. They're always such a blast to watch, and are certainly more entertaining than other reviewer pairings.
Of course, this only applies to Midnight Screenings. The people I've mentioned are enormously entertaining in other series, like The Reviewers. And it goes without saying that they shine in Brad's films as well. Hell, David Gobble as Max Force is one of my favorite performances in any film.
I have very dissapointed Jake. I thought you would understand more of the Spetsnaz. I may have to show you sometime
They've already shown on one of the episodes of the "Deadliest Warrior". Not without several failures information presentation-wise, though. :\
Bree-hemoth. Oh god I'm dying.
I miss Brian, but I guess that might be explainable what with the marriage and all that. Brad and Jake's still a good combo though. I'm wondering why Sarah is not showing as often now and I guess we'll see a Dave resurgence later in the fall once the Oscar contenders/bait start making the rounds. Truthfully after he was the Tyler Perry guy last year, I think I'm ok with him picking and choosing. It's been a while since the last TP movie, wonder when it's going to come and bite Brad in the ass.
Also hope Tusk comes to a theater near you so at the very least you can stop being bothered by people commenting on it. Myself included. I don't understand the way AMC seems to choose some theaters and not others.
aw don't worry,
Tyler Perry is in Gone Girl as an attorney. I think Affleck is fucked...
Actually Jake didn't butchered the Spetznaz name, it's pronounced almost like that =)
Oh, for the god's sakes, заткнись. :\
Он совершенно unable to pronounce the "ц" in "Спец". %)
I actually live like an hour away from Laika studios which made Boxtrolls. In fact I got to hold one of the stop motion bodies of one of the characters in ParaNorman when I took an animation class last year. It was awesome! And yeah Laika is very lucky to exist and keep on existing, even if not all of the movies are blockbusters. I guess it helps that the father of the guy who helped make the studio owns Nike....No I'm not kidding.
Hence the new Boxtrolls shoe from Nike (ugh):
Also, that's why I have mixed feelings about Laika and whether I should like their movies. "Chilly Tee" is not qualified to be running anything.
So when you say "the guy who helped make the studio"... I don't think that's exactly accurate (see: link above)
I actually enjoyed The Equalizer for a few reasons. The acting, the cinematography, the action, and Antoine Fuqua's directing. It's not perfect and it is a story that we've seen a thousand times before, but I still enjoyed it.
I just saw Boxtrolls today and I'm so glad I can finally watch you two talk about it because it's the only way I can 'see' it again already, ahaha! What a wonderful movie!
Also on the time era that it was set in, that was definitely not 20s or 30s. If anything it was close to late Victorian, almost getting to Edwardian (you can tell mainly by the large bustle butt dresses and the children's clothing + the fact those flat barber-shop quartet hats were entering the fashion). Not a nitpick or anything, just trying to share some historical fashion knowledge :)
You think Pluto's shadow being cut in half is freaky?! You're right, but this one is also way too terrifying.
Swing you sinners!
I'm guessing The Drop is not going to get a midnight review. Shame, I think that would be a really fun movie for them to review.
'I don't think we know anyone from Boston'
Isn't Mister X from Boston Brad?
I was under the impression that he was from Detroit.
Hmmm... there seems to be a way to get racy here just to fuck with whitey... I just have to figure out how...
The name of the Russian special forces you're looking for is "Спецназ," (Spetsnaz) translated as "troops for special purpose." I knew my Cold War knowledge would come into use one day.
Don't forget about Simon Pegg and Nick Frost who were also in The BoxTrolls, with the latter being chums with David Ayoade (the fellow from The IT Crowd you guys were trying to remember).
The Boxtrolls villain ballooned up due to eating cheese? So he's Kim Jong Un?
Hey you have a couple of ideas for the site. First you could sell Bobble Head Brads. If they sell well you could have the other Midnight reviewers like Bobble Head Angry Jake and Bobble Head Slaver Brian with action whip. Collect them all!----- Then you could do a new series called PanJake;s where Jake serves pancakes (panjakes) to a bunch of wacky customers like 80s Dan, think about it.
and a Hipster Dave action figure with a voice chip that repeats all his popular catch phrases!
"Fuck this movie"
"Dumb fucking cunt"
"I hate movies now"
What, no "Cunty McMomface"....?!
That's a classic!
That's part of the Tyler Perry DLC pack
and he can moan everytime Slaver Brian whips him.
You should also go with AIDS!!!!, FUCKIN' NERD RAGE!!!! AHHHHH!!!!, Hey Sugartits I hope they kill you in your sleep, and Fuck You, Stephen King!
I really love the fact that you guys know the Mass Effect-Trilogy, my favourite games of all time. And I like the part with Jilian sleeping in the corner, she is always trying her best.
I hate to be that guy, but you've been using the wrong word, Brad. It's "climactic", not "climatic". You're not talking about the climate here, buddy. :p
Really, because I so thought I was talking about the climate.
More libtard propaganda from this site!!!!!
Go back to Russia u commies!!!!!!!
Me: *holding a free movie pass, wondering what's good enough to use it on. Turns on Midnight Screenings*
Brad: "This movie (Boxtrolls) was fantastic."
Me: *Pauses to avoid spoilers*
You'll be happy to hear there were a lot of kids at the theater when my friend and I saw Box trolls this weekend!!! There was this cute kid in there who yelled ew at the snatcher it was really adorable.
I'm also glad you did such a great review on A walk Among tombstones I think last week. I saw it and it was fucking amazing so thank you!
Probably been said already, but *insert-happy-that-would-be-fun sigh* I want to watch movies with you guys. XD
Dude. Midnight BROS in 5 seconds compilation. It needs to happen
I would so totally watch PanJakes. I know this is Brad's site and all, but Jake is the real star here. And I'm glad he shares my opinion on the very premise of "Let's Be Cops". So fucking stupid.
Late to this party, but, Brad, you've never seen the Equalizer?! You would love it!
It's totally sleezy and dark. The credits sequence alone epitomizes 80s NYC.
Stewart Copeland wrote the theme song. 80s electronica at its best:
