So amped for this review
Hey Brad and Dave! Go see Shaun the Sheep. I have a feeling you guys will love that.
FWIW I'll stand right next to you guys as far as Man Of Steel being TERRIBLE.
I personally liked Man of Steel. Probably because I never really cared for the character. The whole blue boyscout/do gooder thing always kinda rubbed me the wrong way. I don't mind that superman is a good guy/hero but I never bought that people would automatically accept him on earth. People would be afraid of him and even hate him. I never minded the Superman/Zod battle in Metropolis either. Zod and his people were the ones that caused the damage not superman and it was either save the whole world or a few civilians. Take your pick. I actually like the more down to earth/rougher approach to the character. But that's just me. I understand if people dont like it. Again I was never a fan of the character and It was the superman movie I was personally waiting for. It was refreshing to me.
As far as Fantastic 4 goes...holy shitballs that sucked. again I don't mind a bit of an edgier reboot but you do need to keep the family dynamic and for crying out loud, keep some humor. Cronenberg and marvel don't mix.
MOS had great direction and didnt make superman bland.
And i think the film still came out as optimistic because Supes still won in the end and showed he had faith in humanity and for the most part vice versa.
Not to mention for a cinematography and direction stand point it was one of the msot visually interesting superhero films in a long time.
"But superman doesnt ki-"
He kills all the time. Not always a humanoid, but he does. He doesnt have a "no kill" clause.
Ah yes, the old disregarding our opinion because of the "superman doesn't kill" line, even though that was only 1% of the problems we had with that movie, and my problem wasn't that "superman doesn't kill," it was that it was a poorly written scene. How I missed that halfassed way to dismiss our entire review.
I also love The Dark Knight Rises. Even with it's flaws, I love it. I love the whole Nolan Batman trilogy. But to each their own.
I hated Man of Steel. Not because of tone or fanboy stuff. It's like watching the link scenes of a game in campaign mode and then being forced to watch annoying kid spend hours destroying shit. To me no scene really links into the next and characters are here and then there and then somewhere else with neither rhyme nor reason. It's a synopses and scenes without an actual sense of story held together by exposition and "inspirational" proclamations about hope or some such. In short I don't give a rats ass about what it did to superman. I do care that it was a bad movie.
I feel that every man of steel fan just parrots the same shit, and fact of the matter is the film is badly written. Pa Kent should've been better defined in what he was trying to tell Clark, superman should've been at least a little upset that he couldn't save everyone (that's the core element of superman that the film never touches upon), and yeah, he's killed people, but if the set up of Zod was for him to deal with killing someone to save everyone, that could've been better set up in the script too. Yeah I get it, no win for superman, but if you're going to give him an ultimatum, make that the focus and arc of the character instead of doing tons of Christ imagery and never explaining that he's inexperienced with his powers (which, given he's fucking 33, why wouldn't he have figured out how to fly. He knew he could fuck up some guys truck yet can't fly yet). The script is bad at setting any of this up, and if they got rid of the handheld bullshit, I would agree that it was directed ok. But I hate that fanboys cling to these assumptions the movie never explicitly says, rather than admitting that the film poorly conveys what's supposed to be a new iteration of superman. He just ends up being not very relatable, erratic in behavior, and sometimes even a dick, without any real insight.
Wow the commenter 'Man of Steel isnt good guys' should calm the hell down and quit acting like a cynical d-bag every time 'Man of Steel' is brought up. You are entitled to your own opinion but don't go bitching at other people that there is something wrong with them liking 'Man of Steel'. People are allowed to disagree with you on a topic or review, hence why there is a comment section.
"I feel that every man of steel fan just parrots the same shit"
Way to lump everyone into the same category, cupcake. You come off as a real classy fellow.
There are probably a lot of films that you have enjoyed that are highly flawed but you enjoyed them nonetheless. Yet here you are talking shit to other people for ignoring flaws in a film they enjoyed. Where do you get off?! Oh you read a few Superman comics which means that makes you an authority on the character. That justifies all the vitriol? Guess what, everybody has their own Superman. The character has been written as omnipotent and invulnerable to vulnerable and flawed throughout his publication history. 'Man of Steel' chose to go the more vulnerable route which is fine. You may not identify with the Superman in 'MoS' but that doesn't invalidate the opinions of people who did identify with him. Nor is it a threat to your presumed knowledge of the character.
i feel like that doesn't really address what I'm saying. My problem isn't that this isn't a new superman, it's just a new interpretation that is done poorly. To be honest, I don't care if anyone likes the movie, that's not the point I'm making and I feel you're lumping me in with a group of MoS people the same way you said I was lumping fans of the movie in one big pile. My point is that people try justifying a bad script that doesn't really develop superman he way I think they want this iteration to be, I think he writing is missing a lot of touch ups to make him a full fledged character. And you assume I'm big on superman, but I barely have read his comics. This is more criticism of the filmmaking than of superman. Yeah, I get how I'm a d bag for voicing my opinion, but I find it stupid for MoS fans to just say he same flawed arguments and think no one can disagree about their logic. I find that ridiculous. Yes, I came off as a dick, and part of that is because it's annoying hearing these arguments over and over like they're some flawless counter argument to people who don't like the movie. I won't even say I hate the movie, I don't. But it's flawed. It's more my problem of people thinking the movie is this phenomenal film instead of just a flawed film that's fun in parts. And people on here do acknowledge some flaws, so I admit that I'm wrong in thinking everyone is on the same boat.
And yeah, like whatever you like, but I don't think the argument of "this ain't yo daddy's superman" isn't as flawless as people make it out to be. If the character is at least consistent with what they are in the context of their new iteration, I'm not going to care. But superman was notably not very consistent in MoS. it felt like either the writers didn't set him up or his actions well, or that there were conflicting ideas, or they just did things haphazardly and didn't think about what that says about the character.
@ 'Man of steel is flawed but my response to man of steel is ok'
Ok now that you have clarified your argument we can now move on.
Part of the problem you and others have when talking about this issue is that you try to invalidate the other person's opinion. You don't wish to debate the issue you want to win and that is where all the vicious remarks come from. When you go looking for a fight it will happen because cynicism is often mistaken as insight. If someone attacks your credibility or lumps you into a discussion that comes off as condescending of course you'll get annoyed. That is why I was so harsh on your original statement. You put a blanket indictment on the entire fanbase for 'Man of Steel' and I took offence to that and called you on it. Your opinion on this matter is valid but so are many of the opinions of the fans that like 'MoS'.
I agree that 'Man of Steel' has a lot of flaws but I feel the movie was strong enough where those flaws didn't detract from my enjoyment of the movie. For me, 'Man of Steel' addressed many problems I have had with the way Superman has been written in the comics and film. From his relationship with Lois Lane, his childhood, and the way he is viewed by ordinary people within the DC universe. I liked that Superman didn't have the utopian childhood and that he was bullied a lot. I liked that Superman had to make hard choices instead of being expected to know-all or be given all the answers. That made him appear more relatable as a character. Icons that are perfect and infallible are boring because they already have achieved success without having to work for it. Superman, unfortunately, for much of his publication history had all the good things given to him from the start: Perfect childhood, perfect parents, a good job, a beautiful girlfriend, and the greatest superpowers. 'Man of Steel' took a different approach and presented Superman as a person striving to be the best instead of automatically being the best. Becoming an icon has to be earned not just bestowed for very vague reasons. The events of 'Man of Steel' have consequences that are being addressed in 'Batman vs Superman' and has set the stage for the DCCU. I am excited to see more of the universe that is being created in DC's cinematic universe. Finally, both DC and Marvel will have a proper square-off and that there will finally be some choice when it comes to superhero films.
Yeah, that's part of the reason why I'm excited for BVS. It's something different from Marvel's stuff, which I love, and it looks to address some MoS problems I have. Overall, Affleck looks like he'll pull off batman, Alfred looks fucking awesome, I still like Henry Cavill as Superman, and Gal Gadot I hope makes a good Wonder Woman, I think she'll pull it off. My only real concerns are that the trailer never really focuses on Superman's feelings on the situation he's in, it's just people talking to him or about him. And Jesse Eisenberg, who I like as an actor, doesn't sell me on Lex, but I'm still optimistic because It's a new version of lex that we aren't familiar with, so he can't really be compared to the lex we know. Overall, I'm pumped, and I do think Zack Snyder has become a better director over his movies, even if none of them I've ever really loved or really hated.
I didnt say that was the only argument against MOS, nor did i dismiss other arguments. i dismissed that one particular argument.
Get my drift?
Why do you care whether people hate man of steel or not? Why can't people just agree to disagree? I don't think you can get defenders to admit Man of Steel was bad anymore than I can convince people that Age of Ultorn was a pile of crap.
That's just saying you can't debate on anything because your opinion conflicts with another's, and that's stupid. The movie has problems, deal with it. People will hammer that shit in until they get it through their heads. But ok, let's just let everyone be deluded assholes because no ones feelings can be hurt or their world view shattered. Jesus.
The fact that you're saying lets just agree to disagree, then say your own opinion on age of ultron, proves how full of shit your argument is
Just a minute. I may like the film but I will fully admit it's not without it's problems. First, I thought having the intro to the film showed to us on krypton was ok but then when clark is on the ship speaking to Jor el, jor el explains to us what we just saw. that was a mistake. second, I though it was too soon for superman to kiss Lois (especially after all that action). third, I wish there was a bit more impact on clark after killing zod. maybe if there was a moment in the film showing him conflicted about it that would have been nice. And i have other nitpicks but I wont go into that now. It is far from perfect but not horrible. I'm just trying to say you are wasting your time trying to change the minds of people who love it. you're not hurting my feelings. People will love what they want. That's reality.
also who said that was my actual opinion of Age of Ultron?
with age of ultron, I'll admit I just assumed, I read it wrong because the whole thing was about Man of Steel, and then he mention of age of ultron being crap came up and I blindly assumed, sorry.
My whole ranty rant on here isn't because I hate the movie as much as brad or Dave, it's just it has flaws that most people just don't acknowledge, like superman being written poorly. Not even that he destroys shit and kills, it's just they never are consistent with whether he's ok with this as long as he saves the world, or that he's inexperienced and is too focused on one thing, or any internal turmoil besides when he's at the church with the priest. They don't really flesh out this new superman, that's the point I'm making, not that I'm a big fan that has to have him as an infallible icon. I'm just frustrated when people are like " he saved the world, so hes justified in anything he does" which really makes no sense to me that we should root for him to just fuck up things and be a dick. It'd make more sense if that was what the intent for this new superman was initially and that he'd grow more mature, but that's never set up, it just feels like they wanted to have these epic fight scenes with destruction and show how real superheroes fight, without thinking about the consequences or what this new superman would do and should do in the situations given. And I'll admit, I was a dick about this, and debates shouldn't be like this and all that, any anything hurtful wasn't personally about you even if I didn't actually hurt you with anything said
It's ok. Everyone makes mistakes. Plus in the end, it is just a movie.
I know I also wrote this below but I'll say it again. I like Zack Snyder but Man of Steel is his weakest film despite my liking of it (yes that does mean I think Sucker Punch is better. you may hate me if you wish but I consider sucker punch a guilty pleasure. I just took it on it's own terms and went with it). His best is probably Watchmen (especially the Ultimate Cut). What do you think?
I'm kinda sick of the Man of Steel invocations, I didn't hate it, it just wasn't a very good movie. And definitely not a good Supes movie, but I didn't regret seeing it or find it offensive or anything. The real question is, why did everyone hate Green Lantern? I thought it was really good, except for the stinger where Sinestro puts on the yellow ring for no discernible reason. Other than that, I enjoyed it thoroughly.
Contrary to my name, I didn't hate man of steel either, but I'm really done explaining all that crap. Honestly green lantern wasn't too bad to me, and I'll say that I don't have as much hate for the old F4 movies. It probably helps that I was young when I saw the first one, go they never seemed horrible. It'd be one of those things you'd see on TV for a bit and go @i remember seeing that when I was 12"
All I can think about that n64 thing is that n64s had an add on that could get connect to the internet. But it was only ever released in Japan.
Yes, you are right there my friend.
But Dave is right too. You could interlink the early Xbox because, like he said, it's was a small computer. It took a bit of skill and know-how, but it could be done.
Honestly, I think they just gave Trank the wrong comic adaption. If it's a gruesome, gritty and dark as you described, he should have been given the director's chair to the Crow or Spawn. Those are adaptions that are dark and gritty.
The world needs a great "Spawn" adaptation. My body is ready.
Nah Trask would prefer to make an Akira movie, that Dr Doom sequence and Chronicles so makes it obvious to me
I don't think being a bad adaptation is damning to a movie. Guardians of the Galaxy was a terrible adaptation. So much changed. But it was an incredible movie. Comic companies modify their material all the time, but a truly bad or a good story always stands out as good or bad regardless of source material.
That's a good point. The shining (Kubrick's) was a bad adaption but it was a great movie.
Constantine is a pretty good movie, just as long as you pretend that it isn't an adaptation of Hellblazer.
Don't forget the ultimate "completely changed adaptation" movie, Princess Bride!
perhaps, but i wouldn't want to see either as a YA style adaption either
Not interested in seeing this movie, disappointed because I thought it could've been a surprise hit, but nope. And thanks to Brad, I will be checking out FF '94, so that can be considered something good in the end.
I still hate hearing Dave talk shit over MOS, and in turn BvS and the DCCU (or DCEU as its been called recently) in general, especially since its been two years since it came out. I feel nothing I could say or do will change anything, such as telling him my favorite Superman story for example; I wouldn't be surprised if it results in him telling me that I'm the problem because I love that story "shrugs". But I guess the only way he'll change is if a) he likes BvS when it comes out, or b) he leaves the site or dies. Yes, that's dark and extreme, but given how he acts and treats people in these videos, I ain't taking it back.
Yeah... hearing dave complain about it does get a bit old and I personally find his and Brad's reactions to the film a bit hyperbolic but we just have to accept that they don't like Man of Steel. I personally don't have a problem with the film. To be fair they are not those trolls who hate everything just to spite people (at least as far as I can tell). Anybody who likes Pacific Rim is cool in my book.
Yikes dude relax it's only a movie why do you care what Dave thinks so much? Did he hurt your feelings? Grow up(unless this is a troll then damn you for toying with my expectations)
I hope you're not talking about me. I was kinda sticking up for Dave all things considered.
Spoiler alert Nate, BvS won't change his feelings for MoS even though the trailer puts it right out there that Supe's called to court for the destruction he & Zod caused while fighting. . .
almost as if they planned it that way from the start........ duh!
Anyway, as far as him leaving the site I never see that happening because so far everyone who leaves was funny so yeah, he's safe, & as much don't care for his ever negative attitude toward EVERYTHING DC without giving them credit where it's due (like the Harley look or not when I see pics of her I don't see Margot Robbie, by God I see Harley Quinn! Same for Leto's Joker(minus the tats), Batfleck, & even Jai Courtney is unrecognizable, with Marvel films I see the actors wearing costumes, which isn't a bad thing) I certainly don't want him to die!
I agree DC's not very good with the comedy or light hearted moments but I'm more offended by the dull colors. I dig MoS because overall it's Superman Begins. He's not Superman yet, hell he's not even Clark Kent yet, he's Kal-El growing up learning how to use his powers & by the very end he puts on the glasses ready for BvS where he'll be full on Clark Kent. Damn it, ranted again. Sorry dude! =D
Im sneaking into a screening of this after paying money for Shaun The Sheep now just for this review
Please review Shaun The Sheep, it's great
Sarah looks different somehow...
Um... Sex change?
Maybe it's the glasses? Or a haircut?
No. No. No. No, I didn't care for Man of Steel, but it was a hell of a lot better than this.
Good to see good ol' Max Force back! But I'm sorry it had to be this film......
54 min....must be really shit
i think the first xmen has aged better than most to be honest.
Also Fox put 130 milion into fantastic 4
they put 20 million at MOST into Deadpool.
Deadpool's red band trailer will have more hits than fantastic 4 will make dollars, and i dont mean profit, i mean over all earnings.
Also i like Man of Steel, i understand why dave hates it....I love it. And will defend it and Zack snyders direction to the death.
It's your right to do so. Don't let anyone make you feel bad for it or try to tell you differently.
6:40 Fuck modern game remakes!
I been so amped to see your guys' review on this.
Fun fact: FOXwas so confident this movie would do good, they already had plans to go ahead and have an X Men team up to outdo Avengers.
Dear Dave and Brad,
Thank you for being one of the few people I know that atleast showed dorm positive for Watchmen. That one gets an unfair rep
Watchmen (especially the Ultimate cut) is awesome. One of the best adaptations ever.
I haven't seen it in a while, but the problem I mostly had was the acting. Otherwise, it was as good of a Watchmen adaptation as we could've gotten
Watchmen was a great movie. I still don't understand the negative criticism of that film. The movie was like 90% accurate to the comic and the tone matched the tone of the comic as well. Heck, I felt the ending of the movie made more narrative sense then the actual comic's ending. Highly underappreciated film.
We were talking about this at the comic book store today. My friend Randy says it was at 8% on rotten tomatoes at one point. So the studio pulled reviews.
finally a superhero movie that isnt retardly quircky you guys wanted another fail like avengers 2 or something wtf?!
so sick of all these superhero movies being horrible comedy attempts instead of serious movies so I should like this one
I understand you ignoring all the dark comic book/superhero movies we said we loved, and all the problems we had with this movie that had nothing to do with it's tone. That would have contradicted your comment.
Man of Steel and Fantastic Four is what a 14 year old boy think what maturity is
Depressing, drab, and gruesome, not to make a point or to confront a hard uncomfortable issue to learn from and perhaps try to fix a situation with understanding and growing such as perhaps Dark Knight
But to look cool and brood, because that's badass and trendy.
This is almost Hugh Laurie's thinking from Tomorrowland, just give up finding a better solution, solve problems with violence and being bitter
Mere cynicism is not maturity
the tone should try to match the comics. batman shouldn't be quirky and lighthearted, fantastic 4 should.
its sad it hasnt hit 4% on rotten tomatos so we can call it the "Fantastic 4%"
YAAAY Dave's back and Brad's back on YouTube! All is right with the world!
for me the Thor movies are godawful.
the first one is watchable though boring, but the second one isn't that far off from being a transformers movie.
so the marvel movies don't all smell like roses.
Dave, Neil Armstrong died in 2012....
Now I just want to play Goldeneye again. God, I wish I still had it.
I remember being in Jr. High and fucking with those scientists on the 2nd level and learned just the right way to damage them enough so that they would start attacking you, which shocked the HELL out of me when I first discovered it!
Ah, those were the days.
Here's what I've learned about comic movies over the years, there'e NEVER gonna be a perfect translation from book to film. There's always gonna be something they leave out, ignore or just plain f*ck up. I find it funny how every comic flick does something different & people flip out, but the stuff I complain about nobody has problems with. Nolan changes Joker & Bane's appearances to make them look "real" & nobody says boo. MoS, the Superman film nobody liked, Supe's didn't have his trademark spit curl, & Jimmy Olsen was "Jenny Olsen". . . huh? But everyone focused on the destruction, which, again, if you don't want action there's 4 boring, "more accurate" films you can still watch. . . Dave! Just as I can watch Jack Nicholson or Cesar Romero instead of whatever the hell Ledger did. TO EACH HIS/HER OWN, DAMN IT!
"To each his own... you cocksucker! Why didn't you like that movie I liked!"
Pick a tone, and stick with it.
*Assuming you're talking to me*
I like MoS, you don't? That's fine, that's why there's still Superman 1, 2, 3, 4 & Returns. You, like many, think Heath is the best Joker ever? Ok, I'm not a fan but by all means enjoy what you like.
Uh oh, a few commenters above also liked MoS? Or maybe they don't quite hate it as much as Brad & Dave HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAATE it. Wow, the balls on these heathens.
Whatever, misconstrue my words all you wish. "Happy Painting, & God bless, my friend" -Bob Ross
Tthe fuck? Anyway, my personal problem is just fans ignoring the films problems and substituting their own interpretation of what happens in the movie...basically making up shit so that the writing doesn't seem as lazy and their precious little superman movie isn't criticized. Yeah, there are the other superman movies, so what? No ones ever said they were perfect, so what point are you trying to make? It just feels like "oh let me feel deluded and like something without any of the flaws pointed out. Also I'll criticize Heath ledger, but it's ok if I do it, TO EACH THEIR OWN!"
Just saying, your "TO EACH THEIR OWN" got cancelled out by how pissed off you sounded in your first post.
Never mind your tangent about Heath, and the 70s/80s Superman movies.
1. MoS is not precious to me. Hell, I'm not even a big Superman fan. I respect he's the first "superhero" & his Moses inspired origin (indeed, they do push it a lot) but he gets boring fast for me & the other five films didn't help much (I, like many, do own the Donner films). Now, my first viewing I just hoped for an action scene or two. Second viewing I looked for flaws, & yeah, there were a lot, no doubt. Final viewing I watched it as a whole film & flaws galore, I still liked it. Sorry?
2. The point I was attempting is if MoS isn't "your Superman" then check out the other films. Don't like them either? Watch the animated versions. Oh, the options you have!
3. I'm not the "it's ok if I do it" type. Just as Henry Cavill may not be your cup o' tea, Ledger's not mine. Simple as that.
4. I "sounded" pissed off? At the end with the exclamation mark, sure (though to be fair, it was more frustration than anger), but how can one interpret emotions from text? Eh, whatever.
5. *sung in the tone of Snob's former theme*
Believe it or not
I agree with you
Lois & Clark had NO chemistry
Seriously though, they fall in love out of nowhere toward the end seemingly for the sake of having a love interest.
Pathetic is a harsh term but so be it, I do hope they keep the origin somewhat intact & try not to stray too far with the costume. Other than that you tell whatever story you wish.
Personally the acting didn't bother me much, but hey, I own the two Batman serials from the 1940s so acting isn't a big issue with me!
Ok, I'm done. If I missed something I'm sorry.
I feel I need to clarify something. When I said earlier that Superman's blue boyscout/do gooder perception bothered me, that wasn't entirely true. I never minded it in the Richard Donner films (Superman the movie and Superman 2 the Richard Donner cut) or even the animated series (and I'll admit I like those more than Man of Steel). I'm just saying that it was about time for a take like Snyder's to happen. Despite the fact that I like it, it is Snyder's weakest film (yes that means I like Sucker Punch too. If that discredits me in your eyes then so be it). Here's hoping Batman v Superman can pull it off.
On another note, it makes me sad Fantastic 4 blew as hard as it did. I don't know if Trank truly lost control of the film or if this was just a colossal miscalculation. either one wouldn't surprise me. I expected it to be a bit edgier but...not this.
Agreed, Donner made two very good Superman films, despite their issues (I'd imagine turning the planet backward would cause worldwide destruction as opposed to one city, or killing a depowered Zod without mercy isn't very super but eh, doesn't bother me). When you say "about time for Snyder's take" are you, like me, referring to 3 & 4 killing the series then Bryan Singer's sad attempt to revive it? Obviously it's cool if you like any of those, it's just MY view. I myself haven't seen Sucker Punch, or his Dawn of the Dead remake for that matter, not being a zombie fan. Even if I was among the many who despised Sucker Punch nothing you could say would discredit you in my eyes........... unless of course you said something silly like Dredd sucked, in which case you'd be DEAD TO ME!
Ha! That's a joke, besides you wouldn't be the only one unfortunately. As for BvS I'm already cracker jacked beyond belief for it, of course it won't be EVERYONE'S taste but based on the trailer I'm sure it'll kick ass. My only worries are Jesse Eisenberg(I'm NOT alone there) & I really hope they brighten up Supe's costume a bit. In truth however, I'm mainly going for Batfleck. I honestly think he'll be the best live action Batman I'VE ever seen. You may differ & still prefer West, Keaton, Kilmer Clooney or Bale & that's not a crime. But whatever, I think we can ALL agree Deadpool's gonna kick alllllllll their asses. . . unless you're like my best friend who absolutely loathes Deadpool =)
Dredd was pretty awesome. My brothers hated it but what can you do?
I'm just keeping my fingers crossed over batman v superman. I don't mind Ben Affleck being Batman. I don't know much about deadpool but the movie might be fun. I will be open minded about that one.
Indeed, keeping an open mind is always good, I should try it =)
For crying out loud, most people don't hate "Man of Steel" because it changed stuff. Heck that's a pretty pathetic reason to dislike any kind of adaptation since it should be obvious that changes are going to be made.
Most people hate "Man of Steel" because it's poorly directed, the acting is banal, the plot holes are massive, Clark and Lois have zero chemistry (As a Clark/Lois fan this is a pretty big strike for me!), the symbolism is so overt and self-important it becomes pretentious and worst of all the writing is just god-awful! I keep going but I think I've made my point.
So you're saying I should just watch 89 Batman again?
I watched The Gift last night after Fant4stic and really liked it, seems totally like something up Brad's alley. Moody, mysterious, suspenseful, and an absolute chiller of a fucking ending.
I'm curious to see if Edgerton can keep it up because for a first-time directorial effort I was impressed.
Trask seems more interested to make an Akira movie, with Dr Doom basically be Tetsuo, and "Chronicles"
I thought Terminator 5, Man of Steel, Ninja Turtles, were much more unpleasant, Fantastic Four is so dull, I can't get that angry
Like other Nolanization knockoff movies this is dull and uncreative
When Rick Sanchez, Doctor, and Star Butterfly go on cosmic traveling, they have fun goofy adventures, but some dirt planet is all these moviemakers can think of?
Like the Gojira remake this is over compensation for a previous goofy movie, and have itself be hinder to not be fun or creative
Fantastic Four is such an out there concept that suspension of disbelief should be expected, having the characters fight on some dirt planet does not necessarily make it more relatable, just dull.
I saw it last night. The movie was so terrible Stan Lee couldn't even make a cameo.
couldn't or wouldn't? Given how it turned out, I'd choose the latter.
Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one who didn't mind the Green Lantern movie. No, it's far from being a "good" movie… but I still had fun with it. The only recent movies I've utterly despised have been "Dark Shadows" and "Jurassic World."
Oh, I recently re-watched Brad's review of "Black Rage" and I was just thinking—what if they made Sue Storm an albino black woman? XÞ
The Thing tried to free the Bacon.
Cool. I can now go back to not caring about this movie.
Just FYI, on the filming aspect with regards to Josh Trank...a lot of the movie was reshot without his involvement. Fox won't so how much was reshot, but from what people have pieced together it seems like a little less than half the movie. Stuff like that ending scene and things that look very commercial-esque were PROBABLY not shot by Josh.
I guess you guys didn't hear that Josh Trank had a meltdown on the set of movie during filming. SUPPOSEDLY he even locked himself in his on set trailer and wouldn't come out until an executive from Fox flew into to talk him out. This was supposedly because he had a heated exchange with the owners of the property that Fox rented for Josh to live in while filming. Its since been confirmed that Josh's dog did a huge amount of damage to the rental property, Fox paid for the repairs and it cost them a lot. Once the main bit of filming was completed, Josh Trank was quietly removed from doing anything more with the film and thus the reshoots happened without him.
I'd still think the cronenberg influence Trank was going for wouldn't have worked, which the guys basically said. It's a studio movie so there'll be some problems, but I think Trank is neither to blame nor the victim
The cronenberg stuff was just out of place and actually looked genuinely horrifying. That would work anywhere else but a fantastic 4 movie.
I went to a panel hosting Robert Englund (Freddy Krueger) and he said that movies are a directors medium; TV is a writers medium and theater is an actors medium. The director provides the vision that goes into the making of a film and forms the narrative to their own personal tastes and style. In other words, a film's identity comes from the director. You can have the best writers write a great story but if the director isn't up to the task then the finished product could still come off as unpolished. Josh Trank should just own up to his own movie. He pitched the idea to the studio and they gave him the money to fund the project and oversee it's production. Blaming "studio interference" when your movie isn't being well-received is just another way of saying that you didn't put enough effort into your job and didn't trust your own decisions.
The problem with all these "serious" superheroes is they end up as self serious, like they are overcompensating for the fact that superheroes are basically juvenile. It kind of reminds me of Barton Fink trying to get to the grit the human condition through the medium of a Wallace Beery wrestling B movie, when really it's big men in tights.
I think it's lazy moviemaking
To make a more "serious" "mature" movies the easy way possible is to desaturate colors on ta computer and have everyone speak softly, bored, and stoic
This may be M Night's fault
I agree with you on the color and dialogue, but I think its down to David Fincher's Seven. because that's where you first get the visual tautology and "serious" tropes. The world weary dialogue, rain, inability to switch on lights, muted color etc. Also, I'd say it's a good example of faux serious themes in a cheesy plot and in some ways resembles the kind of thing you would get if Frank Miller rewrote Theater of Blood or Dr Phibes as a post 80s slasher movie. I like Seven quite a lot, but it's much more of a comic book movie than its rep. It's much less realistic as a portrayal of police work or seriel killers than say Don't Answer the Phone. In truth John Doe is pretty much a super villain. What I'm driving at is that this kind of "serious" approach is couched in a kind teenage vision of heaviness. Dark is more serious than light, grey is more serious than color, rubber is more serious than nylon etc. But in the end John Doe is still Vincent Price and the Dark Knight is still a big man in tights. And I'm saying this as fan of some of this stuff.
your Barton Fink reference makes my heart soar - now I can't be too disappointed in Trank's final product considering he'd been residing in the Hotel Earle all this time
So, I suspect the Corman version of the F4 remains the "best"?
And, in all honesty, I'm okay with that. That movie is imperfect as hell and filled with flaws but at the end of the day it's still at least entertaining and a pretty decent representation of the F4.
Agreed. I have soft spot for the corman movie. Always have.
So are you going to see shun the sheep?
I'm worried about Marvel having a bomb as well due to some of the stuff I read about the Doctor Strange film.
They're not having him study in the Himalayas but they don't know where yet Then, they've cast Tilda Swinton as his teacher but she's said in an interview that even she doesn't know if she's playing the part as a man or a woman.
Yesterday there's a story about the movie is going to be "Marvel's Fantasia".....so a bunch of unrelated story films set to music?
Yes its really him.
It's been proven that it wasn't. The supposed pic of Trank? That was photoshopped.
Those are two completely different pictures of him.
Also he said things in that thread that had never been made public before and which were all later confirmed.
It was him.
Chimpanzees are now considered an endangered species so it's all but illegal to use them in movies now
Out of curiosity, now that Dave is back, what are thoughts on the Supergirl pilot?
And another movie for Brad that Tim Heidecker suddenly appears in for no reason!
I saw his name amongst the cast crawl, and I wondered who the hell he played. He played Reed Richards' father. For a less than five second cameo that you couldn't even tell who it was, Tim Heidecker got a fucking cast billing.
Dave is 100% right about Sue Storm not being taken on the mission to the negative zone. Why should men always be the ones to risk their lives, while women and minorities just kick back and leech off the government? Invisible Girl wants "equal pay" but as usual, not for equal pay. Men once again get screwed over but nobody cares because Political Correctness has infected America.
Vote Trump 2016
they never invited her in the first place. they are the ones who screwed HER over.
i'm guessing you never saw the film by your comment though.
Whoa, we got a white knight here guys. "They didn't invite her" oh boo hoo. Well my friends didn't invite me to go with them to Comic-Con, but so what? I just went anyways (cosplayed as a MALE Ghostbuster), but the SJWs there wouldn't let me in. But who cares, I got in later by acting like I was with a dealer.
Vote Trump 2016
And meanwhile, I'm a nice guy and the girls aren't interested because they are femnazis who expect to be supported by rich husbands so they can lust after male models with washboard abs. Yet if I watch porn I'm called a pervert or a misogynist. You just can't trust women.
I can see you bros need some help. I was once like you guys, women wouldn't even give me the time of day. But then I started working out and now I'm the alpha dog. Also the key is to not to care much about chicks. Did you ever try negging? Sounds crazy but it works! And don't talk about video games and comics, chicks don't care about that stuff. Anyhow, agree about Trump, I like his style
WOW, like i said; you clearly did not see the film.
they got DRUNK and decided to go through the portal. they called the THING, but did NOT call her. it was a total bromance thing.
they didn't only just not invite her, they fucked her out of it.
this isn't about them going to comic con, this was them going "we want to be famous!" while drunk. they compared it to going to the moon. they wanted to be neil armstrong.
they invited the Ben, but they didn't invite Sue. who actually helped build the damn thing.
watch the movie before you complain about it.
I just want to point out, that those Apes were the same character models that they used in dawn of the planet of the apes.
Brad what did you think about the Liam Neeson movie DARKMAN?
Darkman is awesome. "Take the f*ing elephant!" makes the cackle everytime.
I eagerly await that line every time I see that movie!
Oh, Liam Neeson and Sam Raimi are two great things that go great together!
Darkman is such a good movie, a bit wonky but so much fun. I was a bit surprised when I found the collector's edition blu ray compliments of Scream Factory with tons of extras. Highly recommend you, as fans, track down a copy.
"That will be... just fine".
Fantastic Four [9%] has a lower rating than 'The Gallows' [14%], yikes!
Fantastic Four (2005) [27%] and FF: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007) [37%]
i feel like this pic describes how you two are feeling.
Screw all this teen angst dark brooding superhero garbage and Go watch Shaun the sheep.
I just saw the movie. Oh my fucking god that was the worst Power Rangers episode I've ever seen.
I was trying to figure out through the last ten minutes of the review who the crap Mr. Force reminded me of. Then it hit me...
He looks like John Flansburgh. And it's awesome.
It's amazing how much different a little hair swoop can make you look. Someone get Brad a Linnel wig... or have him review something with Spoony. Same effect.
And one last thing. On the comment from the Terminator review on Brad's love interests getting hotter... I greatly disagree. Jillian was WAY hotter than the one that reviewed the veggie White Castle burger with Brad. This new one is cute though. Hope all the best for you guys.
Marvel already had its "bad" movie: The Incredible Hulk.
Which is why we aren't likely to see another Hulk solo film.
Actually, the main reason we won't see another Hulk movie is that the rights to solo Hulk films lie partially with Universal (who made Ang Lee's Hulk), and for reasons I'm not clear on the companies cannot agree on how to share rights and responsibilities for any potential film.
@MaxFnForce does that stand for Max FemiNazi Force?
Hey to be fair we have seen the best Batman film in theaters... I mean no one can deny Mask of the Phantasm is the perfect Batman film.
Damn straight, someone finally gets it
I enjoyed Tim Story's "Fantastic Four" when it came out (but I was eleven and didn't have very good taste in movies) and can still kind of enjoy it when I watch it now. When I saw the trailer for this one, though, it seemed to be a completely different story with different characters. I did have hope that it might just be a good movie nonetheless, but it seems that it isn't. What a pity.
I almost want to watch this whole midnight screening just to see if Brad bitches about Tim Heidecker more.
Honestly I think that Marvel is going to fuck up with Doctor Strange because I can already see some odd choices for that movie.
Yeah, Doom doesn't want to destroy Earth, he needs it safe because he thinks he can run it better than anywhere else.
What's funny is that I remember having press shots and stuff in my old, old, old video game magazines for the Roger Corman FF film and thinking that The Thing looked awesome for the time. Everything else looked like crap but so far The Thing has been the best part of every FF film. Now this one comes along and ruins that.
Then again every part of this film annoyed me as they released info. Black Johnny Storm with a white sister? Why? Grow a pair of balls and make Reed black if you want to represent some color. I'd be less annoyed if it was done because it was a color-blind casting and not because that actor is a collaborator of Trank's. Doom sounded stupid from the very beginning with his announcement as a mega-blogger type. Perez Hilton as Doctor Doom? Awesome. Thing looked dumb. Overly dark setting hearkening back to the Ultimate comics which are my least favorite FF comics ever. Using the Negative Zone and then making it super generic as Planet Zero. It was all just meh.
Then it comes out and I find it's less meh and more holy jeezus this sucks. I'm impressed.
Wow, this was SAVAGE. Brad's gotten vicious ever since his blood initiation into Combat 18.
Heres my review of the new fantastic four film overall i thought it was great so much better then its previous incarnations. Theres been so much negativity towards this film prior its release so much so that knowone wants to give it a chance. Theres a big difference between terrible films (Man of steel) and great films like this. This movie does NOT deserve the bashing its getting reviewers in their mid 50s who say they dont even like the superhero genre SHOULDNT BE FUCKING REVIEWING IT YOUR NOT THE TARGET AUDIENCE. Anyway sorry for my rant josh tranks ideas and vision is parshly realised here i say parshly cause Fox fired him cause they didnt like his direction of the movie which is a damn shame because it his direction that got me interested in this film, with a sci-fiction horror type element introduced in this re-imagining of the F4 which i really liked. The movie begins with kid version of Reed Richards whose a kid nerd who wants to be the first person in the world to tranport himself via to another dimension an element which is right out of the pages of the Ultimate Fantastic 4 comics. I have to say i really liked the re-imagining of reed richards in this movie and with the aspects of science and scientific theorys being interdimensional travel brought into it 7 years later Reed richards is approached by Dr Storm and his daughter suzanne storm who are also working on a similar project but reed manages to do something they couldnt (aside from breaking down the barriers between universes and having said universes collapse into each other but whats a universe between friends) bring something back. The military reluctantly fund Dr Storms project with both Reed, sue, Johnny storm and victor von doom ( well at least they called him that still wish he couldve been Dr Doom from the cartoon/ comics but THAT NOT REALISTIC APPERENTLY...... ugh whatever). I had no problem johnny storm being black in this movie Michael B Jordan did a great job realising the character, the only thing that doesnt fit is the whole emphasis on family that Dr Storm keeps suggesting they are, i mean i totally believed that the actor playing both dr storm and johnny were father and son but i didnt buy for one minate that suzanne storm was meant to be related to either of them not that interacial families dont exist which they do its just the actress playing sue had no emotional connection with ANY of the characters i found anyway. Victor von Doom ok i liked the actor playing as him he depicted the character very well and i personally felt that not only did i agree with him but i kinda cud relate to his character to being if im not sure if anyone noticed i like doom am a person who doesnt like the system. And doom who previously worked on the interdimensional transporter before brings up some really interesting questions throughout the movie like "does anyone remember the scientists name who designed the space shuttle for the moon no people remember Neil Armstrong the astronaut", "why couldnt the scientist go to the moon" so after the experiment is a success the 4 being Doom, jonny, Reed and reeds old childhood friend Ben Grim (whose brilliantly realised in this film btw not just with the incredible cgi and from leaked photos practical model effects but as the character Ben grimm himself before and after he becomes the Thing) go off to the other universe to prove the military wrong and then everything that can go wrong does go wrong the 4 when they go over act like the scientist from prometheus touching things they shouldnt and of course things go wrong haha but i kid. The four our hit with this green goo from the planet which turns them and victor is believed dead. The remaining 3 try to get to the transporter to get back home while sue in our universe tries to bring them back. She brings them back but ends up being infected herself getting powers as we learn later on. The military being THE MILITARY of course decides to exploit these people and use them for what else military applications. Dr storm doesnt like it but he kinda has no choice but to play ball now so he and the remaining 3( cause frightened changed reed runs away abandoning his friends) now have to work for the governments military cause thats how these things usually go i really liked this aspect of the film even the side bad corporate government guy (played by the actor who was elegedly meant to become the leader from the incredible hulk ed nortan film) who uses this oppurtunity to promote the 3 for military funding to well the military so they can make more people just like them. Reed richards is found captured and brought back to but is understandably resented by his friends especially by Ben who holds him responsible for making him well into the thing. Anyway this time a reserching team is sent to the other dimension/ planet zero they call it to study the planet and guess what happens turns out that Victor Von Doom survived and is horribly disfigured and has been alter
to. Hes brought back and you guessed it decides he hates the government, humanity and kills so many people with his powers in his wanting to go back to his new adopted planet and destroy the human race. He even kills Dr Storm his mentor which is heartbreaking but works to motivate the heroes to stop Doom later. Doom somehow becomes one with the planet and is able to make some sort of transporting beam that starts destroying cities while transferring debri an aeroplane and the F4 to planet zero. A fight scene ensues which is overall good but feels very rushed as Doom is disintergrated and the 4 transport back to earth. The 4 r then approached by the military who still want them to work for them but the 4 will only do that if they can have their own lab building and whatever they make they can keep. "What if we say no" Military general says the 4 convince them otherwise and we get a pretty cool scene at the very end like throughout the entire film of the scientific laboritory the 4 will be working in. They banter back and fourth Reed comes up with what to call them and films over he doesnt say Fantasic 4 GODAMNIT just like Captain America at the end of Avengers 2 i was like goddamnit say AVENGERS ASSEMBLE. Then the movies over. Overall great movie give it a chance this movie DOES NOT deserve the negativity its getting. As a person whose NEVER liked the fantastic 4 and the only thing i did like about them were their villains(Dr Doom the skrull, Galactus devower of worlds and the evil living planet what was his name?) I say give the movie a look before you make a judgement i saw it in dun laghaire imc theatre at 6:30 on thursday for ticket price of €9 something and the screening i was in was packed.
i also agree with dave on the dr doom comment he mentioned hes a CONQUEROR NOT A DESTROYER he wants to take over the world not destroy it that bothered me throughout the movie to i thought the idea they were going with was that he was secretly working for the latvarian government then would report back after he gets deformed by the planet and thought dead then come back as its leader and get revenge on the four as i said the last 3rd of the movie is week and it clearly shows that fox shanghighed this movie from trank, they completely overstepped their boundaries with this film and fired trank and completely blamed him for the low performance of the film, which i believed would of done better if fox had just let him make the movie they agreed upon. YES fox owns the rights yes they can change things here and there but ceos of a company CANT make films weve seen this in the 70s when company ceos tried to do this and every film bombed you need a director writers and actors to make a film but you gotta have faith and trust in your director to make the film you agreed upon. i also heard that fox were also denying critics to see the film prior its release. if fox werent sure about this film then they shouldve cancelled it and maybe released it when it was finnished. Fox also has smeered tranks name but so has trank as well with posting on twitter that the movie he originally had in mind wouldnt of gotten ANY bad reviews and denies that the movie that was released is his and blames fox. i completely feel sorry for the guy i liked chronicle i liked his style of films that he makes i think the story that he trashed the appartments that he was staying in that are owned by fox is total bullshit and he also lost the star wars rogue 1 movie to which is a shame.
"if they were to restart the X-Men franchise again now, I don't think they will hesitate to put them in a mask"
Wasn't DOFP the sort of restart to erase the original timeline and give the X-Men a new beginning?
Then why are we still stuck at the fucking Singer era of lame black leather fetish based on the first images of the team in Apocalypse, more importantly WHY DOES APOCALYPSE LOOK LIKE IVAN OOZE!!!!!!
Who's ready for Tommy Wiseau's Fantastic Four???
Honestly Man of Steel is a fine Movie, not perfect, but if you can swallow your "I'm a real Superman Fan" pride. It can be really enjoyable. it's a good movie.
Fan4stick isn't as good, it's not mind blowing or anything, and it's a really terrible, fucking atrocious adaptation for the mainstream idea of Fantastic 4. BUT, I like it, I really like seeing a man transformed by extra-dimensional living-energy and becoming a living God with psyonic murder powers. It's not a good movie, but neither is Krull, I enjoy watching these movies though.
To be fair to Brad and Dave somebody should tell them this movie was fucked by the studio, Trank said flat footed the studio took the movie away from him, cut it all to shit, and did a bunch of reshoots. So if there is anybody to blame here its the studio as Trank was cut out of the movie in post.
