Stoned Gremlin Productions Presents: MIDNIGHT HEAT

7/14/2011

"Midnight Heat" is a story of cops, hookers, killers, and pimps; all centered around one sleazy night in the late 1980's. A cocaine addicted homicide detective (Jake Norvell) is brought out of suspension in order to trail a local prostitute (Bianca Queen) who may become the next victim of The Scalper (Nick Foster), a serial killer who preys on the city's hookers.  Meanwhile, her mentally unstable pimp (Brad Jones) attempts to get out of the business while finding it harder to protect his girls from both the killer and from an abusive rival pimp (Buford Stowers). Filmed and completed in 2007.

You do come off as being mildly retarded-- but no one holds is against your kind of unfleshed moron-hood, granted it might be a little funny.

Anyhow, yeah, this is a good movie and a joy to watch.

I am still bootlegging your movies, especially this one!

ANYWAY, I don't know if I've ever seen a movie more suiting of, literally, the first 5 minutes, you did some great casting(as it were) and picked some REALLY pretty ladies, to be honest, i love your mom's 'cameo' but she does a good job.

I love this movie, I can't decide if I like, Cheap, Paranoid, Midnight Heat or anything else more... I think Midnight Heat is my favorite but you have too much good stuff, btw... this might seem stupid but are Travis and Sarah married or brother and sister?

I might have missed something but they never kiss(look almost nothing alike) and to cap it off... 80s Dan has proven that Sarah has a really nice ass(bathtub cleaning scene compliments of ROB) but does she eat buttered, or unbuttered popcorn, her ass is too nice not to know.

Anyhow, this is great and I love all of this!

Brad, please marry me.

I also wanted to say I really do dig this movie and not just them rockin' tits

Brad, I love your taste in nibblers so I wanted to mention if you had Jake kiss or start making out with the blonde lady in the elevator, as I think you wanted, then it would create more tension, therefore intent, with what they were saying. If Jake had a mouthful of hot-lady tongue, I honestly would have believed his cokefiend character more-- though maybe I'm just horny and think that lady is sexy.

BTW are you just friends with a lot of sexy women or is that just a coincidence?

Seriously though, you pulled out all the stops for the Cinema Snob movie... I don't think I've ever seen is lady with a nicer ass.

After Martin killed the Scalper I was so shocked and glad for your writing,

I didn't expect such a pushover to start a killing spree to protect himself but it was a GREAT move, its was as if the killer's mentality found its way into Martins conscious brain.

(BTW do you just know A LOT of sexy women or is that just coincidence? A happy coincidence at that!!) (Sarah is sooooooo hot in her awesome cameo thingy, seriously those little chops of hair are so pretty, and it's nice to see her, more or less, real hair color of auburn/redish-brown)

I need to mention too, how impressed I am by YOU! You shouldn't care what I have to say but I hope you read this...I loved your character, it was hard to see him break down and pretty much die but Dave's character was amazing too, albeit a tiny bit. I am amazed you can act, direct and edit such great stuff, you have such great taste in music.

Who is that villain? He's awesome and I don't think that he's even in a vlog? He is great at what's he's doing here!

More to come (still watching this awesome movie) which I've seen 3 times(at least) but I AM NOW drunk enough to just act like a jack ass.

Showed this to my Dad last night, as he loves your Snob reviews and was curious to see your films. He liked it well-enough, as he didn't mind the poor quality, as he appreciated your love for the sleaze. He had a few gripes with the soundtrack, mostly because he was an 80's Rock guy, and avoided Top 40 and pop like the plague. I loved having the chance to re-watch it, just for the genuine 80's feel to it. Next movie we plan on watching is Vice Squad, which I know for a fact is a heavy influence based on some of the quotes used. Love your stuff!

Hey, Brad. I dug this movie.

You're a good actor and writer. Great stuff. Besides the Cinema Snob reviews, so far, I have only seen The Cinema Snob Movie and Hooker with a Heart of Gold (and most of 80s Dan). Next, I'll move on to other movies you have done (Cheap is on deck, probably).

Thanks.

This was fucking great, maybe not in the traditional sense but for what it's going for. The poor quality enhances the sleaze-value within the film, the shots remind me exactly of a cheapo crime drama from the era and the soundtrack is spot on for the delivery. I loved this for what it was going for and can't wait to see more of your flicks.

It is definitely a decent movie! I love how complex Martin`s character is. While whatching i never got out from a feeling that you, Brad, are like Orson Welles, by face and the style of acting ;) Sorry for my bad english!

Scenes that made this movie the spectacle that it is

36:30-37:58 (my favorite scene in the movie)

45:39-46:31

50:49-52:37

52:37-53:45

58:01-1:01:25 (that ending quote of “That’s too bad” made me grin)

1:01:25-1:02:10

1:04:20-1:06:26

1:07:19-1:09:21 (the real lightning made that scene awesome for me, it felt like I was actually there; no CGI bullshit lightning, real, nature lightning. How ironic, there’s lightning right outside the window to my left as I write this)

1:10:08-1:12:46 ( “Still…. I like this decade.” That line was so poetically put, and so perfectly orchestrated, that every fiber of my brain applauded upon it’s entrance)
1:12:08-anything beyond

This was a fantastic film. As you said in the intro, Jake does a damn good job in this, but I like Brad’s character a lot more. Brad’s performance was so damn good, when you compare this performance to the performance Brad gives when he’s playing The Snob, it really fucking blows your mind.

The soundtrack was the equivalent of what would happen if years from now they made an American graffiti about the 1980’s/2000’s, it just plays awesome tunes over every scene. I thought it was a bit odd until I realized that it was intentional. The fact is that later on in the film, it didn’t seem like a mistake, it seemed like a unique way to add a sense of consistency…

The female characters seemed flawed, to a weird point; and that’s not my sexism talking that’s the script talking. I felt that if the prostitutes were more interesting this would have deserved a fucking Emmy. I had more fun with this film then I had with both Captain America movies. You could complain of all the technical problems but it doesn’t matter, the point is that it’s entertaining. Brad Jones never fails to prove to me that good Shot On Shitteo films do in fact exist.

All of the tid bits, such as the Caligula poster, and the cat, didn’t take me out of the movie, they were all seemingly realistic when you think of it. It only fit that there would be a cat in the old lady’s house, and it only fit that there would be a Caligula poster in the room with the crazy ex pimp who was corrupting Brad’s character, the taste in movies would have fit.

This movie gets 8 out of 10 stars in my book. Good movie all around, had a few technical problems such as the camera shaking in the first scene, but overall I love this movie. Thank you Brad, you’re one hell of a producer, and one hell of a director, I give your producing and directing skills 10 out of 10, if you can make shot on shitteo look good, then you’re one hell of a good director. The opening credits made me almost scream in joy, and the ending credits did the same. Thank you so much for this gem.

Hey man I was ridiculously entertained by this film! Holy shit the acting was spot on for the most part! You're writing is pretty much flawless in this film and honestly the quality didn't really distract me really at all as I was just having too much fun! Now I'm a lot more like those people who look for the story and acting in films (maybe cuz I'm an actor myself) but seriously great flick!

Rewatching a lot of sleazy 80s films lately, and something I noticed is that this could almost work as a spiritual successor to Red Heat, with Jake's role feeling a little like a more embittered version of the Jim Belushi role.
And of course both films just ooze atmosphere and sleaze

Midnight Heat Drinking Game: drink every time an 80s song pops on... not that i'm complaining. i loved this movie. the writing in particular was top notch. and Nick as The Scalper was creepy as fuck. Now i need to see Sadistic Bitch and make that shit-eating grin a reality.

Midnight Heat in a nutshell:
Lot's of charm
Awsome Soundtrack
and definitly filled to the top with "Fucks" to give, or rather to speak
I made a whole video just filled with all the times that someone said
"fuck " in this movie. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QsJLPo0cVCc
236 fucking fucks, fuck, motherfuckers or similar wordings.
in contrast only 18 times "shit"
and the oscar for the most times a character said "fuck" in one
scene goes to..... Jake Norvell

No, but seriously i really like this movie

Another great film from Stoned Gremlin Productions. It doesn't go exactly where I expected it to, which always makes movies more enjoyable. The soundtrack was great, too. It's mostly the sort of music I really enjoy and suits the setting perfectly.

Haven't got around to this yet but you ARE aware that the description gives away the killer's identity, right? Is he just not kept hidden in the movie anyway?

Title sequence seems very similar to Drive (2011). Even has the same font...One hell of a coincidence considering this was filmed in 2007

I found this quite enjoyable. You definitely showed your love for 80s sleaze.

A couple small gripes I had were that a few times it got too dark to see anything. I know it helps with the grit factor, but I would have preferred to see. At least your lighting has come a long way since then (*cough*earlycinemasnob*cough*). Also, a few times I found the music drowned out what the characters were saying, which was unfortunate. I enjoyed the music, but sometimes it felt like a Best of the 80s playlist was playing the same time as the movie.

However, I still really enjoyed this movie. You play insane people quite well. It got suspenseful for the at the end there as well.

I'm slowly going through all your original films bit by bit. So far I've seen Hooker With a Heart of Gold, and this. Tried watching Freak Out but the second video kept getting stuck halfway through. Seriously, Screenwave is ass. Guess it serves me right for not checking these out when they were on Blip.

With watching this, I've finally seen all of the older films available for viewing on the site, and I like 'em all (I watched the others before the Blip purge; I don't know what made me forget about this one for so long). If I had to pick a favorite, this would be the one I'd pick. I absolutely *love* the quality of writing behind the story and a couple of the main characters. I can't go into any real detail without spoiling it for folks who haven't seen the film yet (I can't be the only person who's scrolled through and read the comments before watching the film), but people who haven't seen the film will be in for one heck of a ride.

I also have to give props for the song choices overall. Very '80s and gives a nice period feel. I even had to make a doc file of the songs I was able to pick out. I'll have to watch the movie again to see if I can't pick out more; I was only able to pick out 13 songs, and I think that was only about half the songs used. A minor nitpick with one of the songs used, though. I was able to pick out "Another Day in Paradise" by Phil Collins in a later scene. This film takes place in 1987, and that song wasn't released until 1989. Maybe the slight anachronism was intentional, though, and the song still works for the '80s feel. XD

The video quality isn't very good, but I really can't complain about that. As an older comment said, if you can make shot-on-shitteo look good, that proves that you're one hell of a good filmmaker. Besides, "Paranoia" and "The Cinema Snob Movie" prove that the technical aspects have been and are improving. Keep filming the good films, good sir.

P. S. Looking forward to "Jesus, Bro!" :)

Watched it a second time. Gotta say that I love little details that I missed or that somehow didn't stick the first time around, so another thing I love about this movie is that it provides a nice rewatch bonus (as my previous comment stated, I can't go into real detail without going into spoiler territory).

I also was able to point out the rest of the songs in the movie's soundtrack during my second viewing. It turns out that I pointed out more songs than I thought I did. I pointed out 13 songs in my first viewing while I only missed 9; I figured out what those other 9 songs were in this second viewing of mine. For the sake of reference since the music listing isn't given in the credits of the film, I'll give the list of songs and the songs' performers here:

Self Control - Laura Branigan
Cruel Summer - Bananarama
Private Eyes - Hall and Oates
White Wedding - Billy Idol
Obsession - Animotion
You Spin Me Round (Like a Record) - Dead or Alive
Bette Davis Eyes - Kim Carnes
Into the Groove - Madonna
Drive - The Cars
I Ran (So Far Away) - A Flock of Seagulls
Girls Just Wanna Have Fun - Cyndi Lauper
Lotta Love - Nicolette Larson
Owner of a Lonely Heart - Yes
The Warrior - Scandal
West End Girls - Pet Shop Boys
Another Day in Paradise - Phil Collins
You Belong to the City - Glenn Frey
Turn Me Loose - Loverboy
Little Lies - Fleetwood Mac
The One You Love - Glenn Frey
Love is a Battlefield - Pat Benatar
Shattered Dreams - Johnny Hates Jazz

Great film. Great soundtrack. Glad I finally decided to watch it.

Didn't notice any Caligula references, but maybe it's due to being yet to watch Caligula, and don't really know what to look for.

Kudos, Brad, you magnificent bastard.

One of my top three films, alongside Casablanca and True Romance. Without Midnight Heat I would have never made my own movies. Sublime dialogue.
