OK, that one made me chuckle.
I get it!
Much better joke than anything Doug came up with!
please,,,do us all a favour and punch yourself in the fucking face!
I don't think you know the proper use of the term "Mary Sue." Unless JJ Abrams has always wanted to be a teenage gilr in a Star Wars movie, then no, Rey is not a "Mary Sue" type of charcter.
I'm surprised people aren't talking about Rey's anger, which is about the single worst possible character flaw for a Jedi...
The ground basically opens up at the end not to save her, but to stop her from crossing a line...
It was a joke.
Rey's no more a Mary Sue than Luke was in the original trilogy. Hell, she's arguably a little less of one: Luke could hold off against Darth Vader in a lightsaber fight for a while in Empire when all he'd done on-screen was train with the blindfold helmet and little flying ball thing.
Rey had been using that staff of hers for years living on Jakku, a skill that seems like it would transfer over quite well to lightsaber combat, and was only fighting a Darth Vader wannabe who had a chest wound at the time.
Honestly, 95% of the time, "Mary Sue" just seems to mean "female main character who's allowed to be as flawlessly awesome as a male main character at things".
I commented on similar matters on the midnight screening video. Simply put, Rey is good at everything. I ought to get her to do my taxes and connect my computer to the internet with the force. I'm not interested in a character that has his/her shit together because that's a theme park ride. She's more an avatar, willing plot points into existence and making rocks gracefully float across the screen. Every other character is basically comic relief to make her Jedi perfection less obvious. Luminous being is she, no one else apparently. I encourage anyone reading this to name a "flawlessly awesome" male main character that people identify with.
You forgot where he spent time training with yoda and that darth vader had no intention of killing luke and was basically toying with him in empire. Rey has 0 training in both force and lightsaber fighting yet is able to out mind trick and outfight Kylo. Rey is a mary sue. Luke had training in everything beforehand and actually has a character build. Rey is already great at everything where does she go from here? The only logical idea is become have rey become Sith and Kylo go light side because Kylo actually has a character to develop Rey is already able to do basically everything we've ever seen a jedi do why should i care about her growth? Rey is as Mary Sue as you can get without being a parody of the idea.
Sorry, but Luke is NOT a "Mary Sue". First movie, he knows nothing. Second movie, he knows more, thanks to training, but Vader was toying with him. Third movie, Luke was ready to face Vader as his TEST, beats him, and realizes the real lesson: that he wasn't his father, and that he could call himself a Jedi, like his father. Even then, he didn't win because it was Vader who defeated the Emperor. So, no, Luke isn't a Mary Sue.
And thing is, neither is Rey.
Though Rey shows abilities that would seem like a Mary Sue, the actress Daisy Ridley was able to convey Rey's emotional state throughout her journey. A Mary Sue would have been perfect, as you say, and Rey, in spite of being OP, relied upon her instincts when she needed it the most, and those instincts, in turn relied upon the Force to get her through, leaving her with more questions than answers.
People seem to automatically assume Rey has never had any prior training. What if that turns out to be completely untrue? If she's related to Luke or Leia and was strong in the Force from birth, don't you think Luke would've taken her under his wing and trained her starting really young? And then maybe a big ass traumatic event like witnessing the murders of Luke's other Jedi apprentices at the hand of another close relative, Ben Solo aka Kylo Ren, made her repress her abilities and memories, before being dumbed on Jakku for yet to be explained reasons? Wouldn't it explain why she even thought of using Force persuade on a stormtrooper without even knowing that's a thing Jedi can do, as though her training is resurfacing without her knowing? Or how she appears to be pretty efficient with a lightsaber...? It would make a lot of sense, wouldn't it?
People are judging Rey's character, and the whole movie as a matter of fact, based solely on what little info we're were given in TFA even though it's clear we do not have the bigger picture. Unlike A New Hope, which nicely wraps up everything by the end with the exception of Vader surviving, TFA is setting up an overarching story and characters and not everything is answered. There's a lot more up in the air than, say, the prequels, in which you could predict every beat. What might appear to be 'plotholes' right now might just be explained later, hence why I reserve my final verdict for when I have the entire package deal.
For now, I'm in "wait and see" and "OMG, I have a theory for everything" mode.
Come on, Rey is as much a Mary-sue as Milla Jovovich is in resident evil, everyone just wait for her to resolve the situation or they fail to do what only she can do. it's a bit boring how she's given new power without much explanation
I just don't want to see the next movie being about a thousand super powered Rey clone fighting Uber-infected-troppers-X1 by doing backflip in slow-mo and using the force to make them explode... while everyone just stay there and watch
People aren't waiting around for Rey to fix their problems. She's just with them when bad stuff is going down. As for talent, she's good at what she does, but she sticks to what she's good at.
She wouldn't look so much like a Mary Sue if Ren didn't keep losing his abilities at key moments to the point that he not only looks like professor Snape, but it seems like he might actually be deliberately not using them. The dude can stop a laser blast in mid air, then he can barely lift his lightsaber!
Yeah, what a pussy. He only got shot in the gut, just walk it off.
He's a weak bad guy not fit to lick Darths Vader's or Maul's cloaks. It's the young adult fiction Star Wars with the interesting children's fairy tale mythology replaced by teen angst. Rey isn't a Mary Sue she's a super hero . The stuff about the Lightsaber choosing her was more Harry potter than King Arthur. It's an entertaining enough film but people are making excuses for its weaknesses. , Personally, I think some fans are so pleased it isn't the PT and looks enough like the OT they're not noticing it isn't actually Star Wars.
You're thinking of the term "Self-Insert".
Hang on... who Williams is Kylo not as big a disappointment as?
Mutt Williams, think other Harrison Ford sons ;)
Lasted longer than I thought I would. Watched a good couple minutes before Doug completely annoyed the piss out of me and I had to shut it off.
Really? I was going to say I was surprised Doug kept something under 20 minutes for once. Not the best, not the worst. Good job as always, Brad.
Insert Doug bashing here.
Insert blind devotion to Doug's bullshit here.
Insert quick being dicks, stop bitching and do something else.
Replace "Justin Beiber" with "NC" and/or "Doug" and that pretty much sums up every fantard logic.
Still disappointed we didn't see Doug chained up to Michaud the Hutt.
Though I have got to give it to that greenscreen, hardest working member at Channel Awesome.
No Brad dancing with a Wookiee? After seeing you with Bigfoot I thought that would make an appearance. Or at least a Meatloaf appearance with an annoying kid hunting down said Wookiee.
Very good impersonation of Han Solo. Just need a Kinect device in the backgorund to do the Han Solo dance.
I for one don't get all the Doug bashing. In fact, I was wondering, Brad, if you would consider giving Doug his own series on this site? Perhaps a sketch show or maybe just a v-log? I'm curious as to what his real life persona. Dude seems like he could be a magnificent actor as well.
Doug does a lot of vlogs actually. He's done them for some animated shows like Korra and Adventure Time, and you should also check out Sibling Rivalry which is kinda like Midnight Screenings in format, its just him and his brother sitting in front of the camera reviewing a movie
I want to see him on this site though. Frankly I'm getting kind of tired of seeing Brad in most of these videos.
@spencer: are you fucking serious? I sincerely hope you're joking. Let me spell it out for you: This is Brad's site, hence, Brad is in most of the videos. You want to see someone else, go to his/her site. It's not rocket science.
I don't get all the Doug bashing either. I mean, do these people think they're respecting Brad by disrespecting one of his friends, or do they just like flaming too much to care?
Yeah well, it's also not like one of Brad's fellow reviewer friends has ever disrespected another one of his other fellow reviewer friends... Oh wait, aren't both Spoony and Lupa friends of Brad?? Same with Phelous? Whom for some reason, we can't mention his username on the Channel Awesome comments section, without getting mod approval? What is this sorcery??
People are allowed to prefer person A to person B, even though A and B are on good terms. And while I don't "hate" Doug (far from it; I respect him as a person, because he has shown to have acknowledge criticisms against him, and is able to handle it and laugh it off) the people who choose to get emotionally defensive over it really need to re-evaluate their behavior and why they're rationalizing "trolling" and "criticisms" to be one in the same, and redirect it - TOWARDS ANOTHER PERSON- as a personal attack.
Damn i wanna watch this but i still havent gotten round to watching the movie yet.
Great job, got a few laughs out of this one! especially JaJa
Can we get Brad's version of Demo Reel back instead of fucking Doug's just under the label Nostalgia Critic?
I miss the Admiral, so seconded.
Third. I like Admiral Crackers too!
I always start my morning right with the Admiral's salty goodness!
When are the 2015 best/worst lists due Brad? Those are always a fun watch.
Brad, you are soooooo good as Harrison Ford!
"Anybody want tan tan for dinner?" CLASSIC!
any chance of a reanimator review?
I like Doug, I think he can go over-board sometimes and his opinions sometimes are founded on odd grounds but I don't mind him. Find him funny enough.
Of the handful of "Demo Reel"-style reviews TNC has done this is one of better ones. Not as good as the "Pixels" one (where I think the format worked out very, very well in critiquing the movie) but not as bad as the "Hocus Pocus" one where a)there was no need to do a recreation since the movie's video ca be sourced but it wasn't a review so much as a tongue-in-cheek recreation.
I thought things were done well here, overall. Loved Brad's performance as Harrison Ford -he pretty much nails Ford's "don't give a damn" attitude- and this review nicely points out that the recreation of the Episode IV/OT scenes was done to show they can handle the source material without diverging from formula.
The only problem I have is what Doug also pointed out in the SR review of E7. He semi-rants that there's not enough emotional investment in the Top Gun pilot and their destroying of NotDeathstar since we're not given much with Top Gun guy (Poe?) or much investment with the "Rebels" here. Only thing we have is that NotDeathstar is going to destroy New Republic worlds.
My counter to this is that, at its core, the NotDeathstar doesn't matter. The impact of what happened is going to matter in the new trilogy but for this movie it doesn't matter. The movie is more a story about our new characters and Rey's journey. The NotDS is a backdrop. That's why there's so little focus on it, we're focused on Rey, Finn and Solo.
Personally, I think the new trilogy will involve the not Luke Skywalker confronting the rise of the not the Empire and the not Darth Vader for as long as Disney can milk it and firmly believe that whilst the next movies won't be quite as blatantly derivative as this one they will be more of the same cut-to-the action tent-pole film making because their model is the Marvel universe.
I remember when Doug was a pussy and was afraid to offend even a single fan with his videos. Remember that "praise Mako" shit? And the obvious Avatar vlogs pandering? So... Why is he now making fun of shit people like without giving a damn? Is he just trying to stay topical in a world where he's known for NOSTALGIA? It's pathetic.
And Jar Jar jokes? HAVEN'T BEEN FUNNY IN TEN YEARS. Get over it.
The Passion of the Christ crossover was epic. This, however, is sad. Can I give you my first thumbs down, Brad? Cause here it is. You can't see it because I'm on my computer and not in front of you. ;)
Man, the "Praise Mako" thing wasn't because his fans got offended at him mocking Mako, it was because he made a throat cancer joke about Mako without realizing the guy had died of throat cancer. That wasn't to appease fans, it was to apologize for accidentally making an insensitive joke.
Jesus Christ, that fucking Mako stuff again!?!
