After months worth of teasing, it's time to take a look at the pilot episode of the forgotten 1992 series "Tequila and Bonetti."

Hey man, me too! :P
The german part and the watching part.
I still remember having my own room, getting my first own TV for my Birthday and watching Tequila and Bonetti every week.

I guess it is just nostalgia, but in my head the german voice for Tequila was a lot more fitting. Really threw me off to see the original version.

I remember this being aired on Hungarian television. Also that sequel series where Bonetti goes to Rome.

I hope Terry Funk got to bust out his "egg sucking dog" line at some point during the run of the show.

One case in and Tequila already trumps Poochinski. Plus they swerve you on which character gets the dog based pun name.

To respectfully disagree, I think he doesn't mind it in Tequila and Bonetti because even if it has serious things in it, it doesn't really seem like a show that is meant to be serious overall. With Last House On The Left, it does and having those random tone changes does it more harm. Just my two cents, though.

It's just a fact that the tonal shifts in Tequila and Bonnetti are exactly the same as in Last House on The Left. Brad is either confused, being contrarian or is plain weird..

Reply
Brad

Except Tequila and Bonetti is mostly a comedy. Last House on the Left isn't. And aside from that, at the end of the day, I found the jokes and tone in Tequila and Bonetti funny, and the ones in Last House on the Left not so much. That's like saying that because I liked the fart joke in Blazing Saddles, I now have to like every fart joke ever in the history of ever.

Shame about Brian. While we would all like to see him down a thing of hot sauce and set his insides on fire, it might be prudent to delay it a bit. At least until there's less of a risk of his bowels blowing out in the middle of filming.

Now I'm imagining that movie being reworked as a reboot of Tequila and Bonetti which would be messed up. But I shall be taking this show down now.

This is weirdly reminding me of Charles Rocket's death. The investigation of his death finally concluded when it was ruled a suicide by the medical examiner even though it happened under very peculiar and unlikely circumstances, he's famous for a mistake he made a long time ago that nearly ended his career and it's commonly believed that this would make him go into fits of self-loathing when he was alone, and his body was discovered by a dog.

Yes! Thank you, thank you, thank you! The glory of Tequila and Bonetti has finally been unleashed upon the unsuspecting internet!

But seriously Brad, you rock for deciding to cover the whole thing!

Damn, I miss the early 90s whacked out side of the box show with great B casts.

And for all of you folks out there who've never heard of mr. Jack Scalia, you absolutely must check out T-Force (1994). It's a B-movie version of Bladerunner, but with Terminators! :)

If they ever remake this show, which of course they won't, Kevin Hart should play Bonetti and Terry Crews Tequila. That way, it's still cool AND totally not racist. Token Bil Hader can play the late mr. Rocket's part.

I thought it was fascinating. First time Brad referenced this show on another video I looked it up and I was totally bamboozled by it, I can see why Brad finds it so intriguing. It is such a totally bizarre concept for a cop show (you can tell the network was trying to give it a unique, zany 'spin' to make it stand out from the many, many competitors in that genre) and the fact that the drama is actually done so well (which is something I also found people saying when reading about it) just adds this extra layer of weirdness. There was no WAY this show was ever going to succeed, the mash-up of ideas just wasn't coherent enough to really appeal to any demographic, but the fact that what was in essence a SHIT idea was pulled off so competently is kind of fascinating. Plus, early 90s cheese- like that neon pink apartment! Can't go wrong with that either.

So yeah, I'm psyched Brad is focusing on the whole series, I'd never heard of it before he started name-dropping it and I'm so curious to see what the rest of it's like. I really, really hope in the last episode he takes some time to give an analysis and opinion of the entire show overall, I can tell he genuinely likes it but it'd be cool to hear his exact take on what he thinks worked, what didn't, and if this EVER could have had a chance to make it beyond a few episodes..

But how weird is that; It does have charm, it does stand out... And still, this entire episode I had the feeling that I had seen this shtick before. Most of the media Brad is enthusiastic about, I am too, because for the most part I get the guy, we both have very common interests, but most of the moments where Brad was enthusiastic about a scene, my only thought was "...Eh, that wasn't really special". I will however watch the rest of the episodes, because maybe this pilot gives me a very false impression of what the series is capable off, but this episode was a catastrophic letdown for me, as the teasing bits in previous episodes by Brad were really funny to me. Then again, I'm very happy for all of you that you are enjoying it, it's probably just not my cup of tea, although it should be.

This show reminds me quite a bit of Inspector Rex (aka Kommisar Rex in Austria), very similar premise except the dog doesn't talk- though I guess there's a few dog-partner cop shows. Inspector Rex has some of the same tropes though (the dog Rex is always stealing a certain policeman's ham roles) and has a slightly similar 90s goofiness to it, but with a European flavour obviously.

Hey Brad, huge fan of Cinema Snob! I wanted to share a cool story with you. My friend and I were at the at the beach the week they filmed Tequila and Bonetti. I'll never forget it was at Seal Beach, California. There were a bunch of props there for the filming and we saw the hover board from Back to the Future. My friend and I wanted to steal it so bad but we didn't. Anyways, we asked the film crew what they were filming and they said it was a TV show called Tequila and Bonetti and we about fell out laughing, what a stupid name. Anyways its cool to see you review this. Trip to see footage of it... Thanks Cinema Snob!!
