You can only get frozen durians in the US. Apparently, they are only harvested when they're ripe and have fallen from trees. I feel the texture is greatly affected by that.
I had a durian/coconut rice pudding that was really good. They say it goes very well with coffee. I've tried that and I strongly disagree.
I haven't tried using it in a savory dish but I think it would work in a thai style dish.
Durian's lose a LOT of their odour after they have been frozen. Seriously, cutting open a fresh one is a WAAAAAY different experience, it seriously smells like something DIED.
That being said, yes, Durian's are very dangerous when they reach the point where they are ripe and ready to drop off the trees, to the point where there's apparently signs warning people not to walk under the trees because obviously the spikes combined with the high velocity of the falling fruit can cause some VERY nasty injuries.
Love durian so much!
