White House Will Not Support SOPA
Been an ok day so far. I was supposed to go out of town, but the roads are a bit fierce; so instead I've ordered some food (because I'm a dick who has food delivered when roads are bad) and I've got a sasquatch movie to watch. It's not for The Snob, I just love watching Sasquatch movies. So, anyway, the food is pretty good, and the sasquatch seems hairy, and that in it of itself could be rather good news for what is going to be a rather ordinary day around the house.
And then this here news comes in, which elevates this day to being pretty great: The White House is Against SOPA
Oh yeah, and I've also heard that "Work It" was cancelled. I never saw the show, but I understand that a lot of people are rejoicing over that too.

Which is - nice, but then again, neither do they support Guantanamo.... I'm not sure stopping SOPA is higher on Obama's list than closing down Gitmo.

There's nothing wrong with Brad being optimistic, especially since it has the potential to affect his work. Also, all the President has to do is Veto it if it goes through. That's a little easier than anything else "on his desk" as you put it.

Plus, he did try to close Gitmo, but the states wouldn't let him. None of them wanted the prisoners 'in their backyard'.

Great! So does this mean they won't pass now, or? (Doesn't understand American politics...)
Reply to this
IIRC, if Obama vetoes it, then it goes back to Congress, and if Congress decides to pass it *again* it goes through.

A veto override takes more votes.

If Congress passes Obama, can veto it. Congress can override his veto, but it takes more votes to override than it does to initially pass the law. 2/3 of both the Houses of Congress must agree in order for the veto to be overridden.
Reply to this
and overrides are very rare. There has been only 110 overridden vetos since George Washington and only 7 since Ronald Reagan.

What I don't get is how this affects fair use. I mean does having any copyrighted material on your website make you liable if so then all future video's will look like this: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/videos/view/jimquisition/5202-SOPA-Approved

All it would take is 1 person to complain.

It effectively abolishes fair use.

I really don't see this as being good news. The White House still wants to control the internet and the PIPA bill is going to be moved forward as it is in congress. It's total bullshit that they say these bills were designed to stop foreign countries from stealing copyrighted products over the internet because the bill would actually do nothing of the sort. It would simply block any website, foreign and domestic alike, from putting anything out deemed to be copyrighted. So people like Brad would end up being sued and maybe even put in jail for the work they do.
With that being said, I do understand why there should be a law against people who are selling bootleg copies of music and movies over the internet, but if it's something that companies refuse to put out for sale themselves I don't see why others can't make copies and sell it.
And if people like Brad want to take footage from a movie they own and make satirical jokes on the internet about it then that's their right too, especially since you're making money off the advertisements not the videos themselves. You're not charging subscription fees and you're not selling your videos on DVD so where is any copyright law really being broke?
And what are they going to do to places like Amazon, or even offline places like pawn shops who resell previously purchased DVDs, VHS tapes, vinyl records and CDs? Are they all of a sudden breaking copyright laws now too? And if not, then why should people like Brad be stopped from making video reviews since he's not reselling anything? Why should it be illegal to freely give away a product that was previously purchased? A lot people, me included, have actually went out and purchased copies of movies, music, and even old video games because of people like Brad. Now isn't that what's supposed to be the point of commerce, of having an economy? I know this is a long rant, but the way these bills are just really pisses me off. They shouldn't even exist.

Vetoing SOPA is a step in the right direction, and that is what Brad is happy about.

I know that, and from the headline that's a good thing, but read the full article. They still want to make SOPA happen, just altering one or two things. The whole bill needs to go away and so does PIPA.

Whoo!! SOPA needs to be stopped and on a side note, it's good that Work It got cancelled, I never saw it but everyone tells me that the show was an abomination, To me the images of the show constantly reminded me of the classic Glen or Glenda... well classic is used loosely for that.

What about that Travolta series where he dressed in drag!? I forget the name but I recall seeing it on a VH1 countdown!

Actually I watched it. It was not horrible. It was OK. It probably got canceled because guys were in drag, some right wing religious groups complained to Disney (I mean ABC)and so it was canceled. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't good but it is not as bad as many say it is. It can be very funny at times. However I am surprised it took this long for it to be canceled. I thought it would be one and done but it last 2-3 episodes. Maybe ABC has some balls.

I'm very glad that outcry against SOPA is finally having an impact. It needed to happen.
And I've got to say that I'm glad to see Work It go as well. It diminishes the experiences of myself and other transpeople while propping up some damaging myths and stereotypes.

Though I won't pretend to be anything close to an expert on the mechanics the American political system this does appear to be a positive development.
I wonder what food Brad ordered to compliment his Sasquatch movie. I had a pizza delivered today as i was too hungover to bother with anything else. It sustained me through viewings of The Video Dead and Madman.

He wasn't going to sign the NDAA either because he wanted more power, low and behold it's now the law of the land to detain any citizen for any indefinite amount of time without informing anyone in the public of said detention. While it might be a little glimmer of hope, with something as atrocious as SOPA and PIPA it would be a sad day just to get them to the president's chair for a signature, he shouldn't have to be the stop gap for ridiculous bills.

Oh, thanks for the good news. Sure, people who, for what reason ever, don't like the Obama administration (because the alternatives are so much more attractive, right?) will whine and bring up the usual conspiracy poop, but I'm slightly more optimistic now. Thanks.

If SOPA passes it would be the death of the internet as we know it.
So much of the Internet-entrepreneurship of the US was based on the freedom the internet gave. This bill would kill that entrepreneurship by making more obstacles for creative people and more ammo in the hands of those people who dosent want progress.

We still need to fight Sopa every step of the way , the Veto wont matter is two thirds are for SOPA , and not to mention Obama has gone back on his Veto promises before, so no one should take this as the end of SOPA

Is the sasquatch film "Bigfoot" from 1970 with Carradine?
I consider that to be the most overlooked good-bad movie that's kicking around these days.
I just pop that in and laugh my ass off at all the ineptitude and all the fucks ungiven in that movie.

Well if fair use is gone then prettymuch every reviewer ever on the net is totally fucked then. I see why this is such an issue now. It kinda makes sense in a perverted way. Get rid of the amount of film reviews online so that they can release whatever shit they want without any kind of criticism. Smart.

Which Bigfoot movie!?
You probably killed a pizza delivery boy!
SOPA is dead for now!
But, if "Work It" is canceled what is Jerrid to watch now!?

Do not be fooled, mr. Brad. We won the battle, but the war is not over yet. We must keep on fighting.
Are you planning on doing a blackout of the site, like Reddit, Destructoid and Minecraft.com?

Because President Obama has never, ever gone back on his word. He is a different kind of politician, one who is honest, open, and doesn't murder US citizens overseas (and their children) with drone attacks.
No, I think President Obama wants this passed just as much as he wanted the ability to imprison and detain US citizens without due process codified into law.

He only signed NDAA as an ultimatum to America. Either you reelect him or one of his right wing opponents will use the power that NDAA gives them. Basically he won't use it but that doesn't mean his opponent would not use it if they win. Obama's has some balls. Who new?

Hey. Nancy Negatives. I know how the law works. Let me be happy for 5 minutes.

Hey, your five minutes were up long ago, buddy. Now if you want an extra 15 minutes that's fine, but you really have to get back to reality after that, lol!

The level of ignorance is astounding in that post. I'd love to delve into how stupid a statement that is, but I'd rather turn this blog into a political one.

This is genius!
First the White House passes the NDAA, and now they try to give us the false impression of fighting the "good" fight, for our internet "rights"!
Don't worry folks. The SOPA will pass eventually. They will revise/rewrite a few clauses to make it appear less intimidating, and it will pass. They're just testing us to see where exactly is our breaking point. Apparently, most Americans think it is OK for the government to have the right to detain, torture, or execute innocent people that are SUSPECTED of certain crimes, but God forbid they try to take down a blog or mess with their facebook account. Americans have once more proved that they are idiots of the highest caliber.
