It's not so much that he is too old or uncool because he is married ... but someone that is married is way past the point in their life where the kind of teenage dating angst thing is something to be identified with (unless you are a middle aged mother pining over teen love with werewolves and vampires). And Brad seems to be very much a "child of 80's" while Pilgrim is basically a 90's movie. Brad simultaneously didn't like it but also seemed to understand why he didn't like it.
The plot of the movie very much fits a Zelda storyline. Link, especially in games like Ocarina of Time, Link is a bit of a heartbreaker in his games with tons of girls that seem to have the hots for him, (and he is either oblivious to it, or is a huge jerk to them) but he only has eyes for Zelda. A girl he knows next to nothing about and just wants her because she's "the prize", he saw her once, and it was "love at first sight". Heck, even the dream sequence sort of fits that. Of course, even the movie realizes that Scott and Ramona aren't as great as their "roles" as protagonist/love interest would indicate. Spoony got to the heart of the analogy in terms of early 20's underachiever that is struggling in terms of trying to have a mature relationship.
-------------------------
In terms of trendy stuff ... Reality TV and 3D are here to stay because, unfortunately, they make money. Reality TV is cheap to make and gets ratings comparable to "real" TV, so low initial cost for bigger net profit, and 3D works out the same way since it's an excuse to charge more money at the theatre (and convince people to come to the theatre in the first place). I felt offended watching his review, that you (and the rest of us) just didnt "get it". Brad you touched upon in your original review that there wasent a single likeable characters, i fully agree, nobody is half remotly likeable in that movie.
"But thats the point!" said Spoony, he follows it up "It was on purpose".
Look, there is no doubt in anyones mind that those characters were NOT SUPPOSED to be likeable at all, they were purposly written in a such a way that you detested one more than the other.
I love Zelda i love Tekken, but i hated Scott Pilgrim, this is Twilight for guys who are into anime and videogames, it is like you said, a hipsters wet dream.
I know you cant and wont go further into it (and you shouldnt anyway) but Spoony simply saw alot of things in that movie that werent there, he made up his own rules and ideas for why he liked the movie. If he put 10% of that effort into every movie he reviewed, they would all end up being positive. He put no effort in his reviews with Avatar where he complained about floating mountains, and hair that plugs into horses for 40 min.

And Antwiler himself is a hipster, infact his sickening review of this movie is the EXACT showcase of a hipster who takes what he likes and then projects his own theories and such to make the movie seem deeper than it allready is.

Also being targeted at hipsters is the least of this movie's problems. The movie is definitely hipster, but that doesn't mean that anyone who likes it is one. I've talked to a few people and a lot of them seemed to miss important plot points for some reason. Why certain things happened that were fairly easy to get if you were paying attention. Not sure why that's happened, I didn't feel like the movie moved so fast as to confuse the watcher.

I liked the comics, I think Cera is a watery-voiced twat who ruins movies. That's where I stand on Scott Pilgrim. Remember kids: It's okay to like things that other people don't.
Now, on to Piranha, which was, I believe, what the point of this review was supposed to be. I don't like gore flicks. I just don't have the stomach for them. I prefer the silly-as-hell 'jump scare' horror movies. But it's good to see that in this day and age of everyone being so god damn overprotective of shit, that someone had the balls to just make a gross-out gore movie that's dumb as hell.
Because trying to make a smart horror movie just makes you pretentious.

Just got back from seeing this, and it's a fun little flick. Perhaps takes a little long in getting to the set-piece at the end, but it's totally worth it if you're a gore fan. Within 5 seconds of the movie starting, there's a Jaws reference - "Show me the way to go home...." - and Mr Dreyfuss lays another one on within a minute - "Fast fish" - great stuff. The teenagers were annoying, but I've seen worse in any of the shitty horrors that Phelous has reviewed. Did I need to see a 3D dick? No, but it got a big laugh. Oh Brad. You gotta let this Scott pilgrim shit go right, everyone is talking too much about it. I found it refreshing to see you NOT like the movie, instead of the absurd amount of praise for a movie that I found so annoying myself.
I do find it hilarious that the comments proved you right in every way, though. Since you called it pretentious hipster shit and people responded with...pretentious hipster responses of "You just don't get it." and shit like that.
Though the funniest responses from the insane fans of that were that: "you're too old" and the mention of not being cool because you're married. I honestly laughed real hard at those comments just because...wow, no one over the age of 8 years old came up with that.

I will admit on the hipster front (at least in terms of how he describes 'us' as hipsters in terms of Daria and Zim) were pretty spot on. He knew who would like it. The "don't get it" thing is pretty much what he said, it's not for him.
Reply to this
I agree, the Scott Pilgrim thing is getting boring. But the logic of the "too old" and uncool argument is valid. Yes, people who geek spot ancient video game references and watch anime are not living in the past and are obviously really cool. In my day young people took soft drugs and had sex. There was none of this hipster stuff. We had to make our own entertainment back then. I really envy da yoot of today and wish I didn't have to wait until I was an old fart to withdraw from actual activities so I could read comics and watch the raw sex power of Scot Pilgrim; The Movie.

I don't get why you're following up with Scott Pilgrim. It's fine if you didn't like it, or it wasn't your style or kind of movie. No need to get defensive about this one film just to try to appease others some. If you didn't like it, just say so. It's not much of an opinion to take when you're going backwards on your original input like this.

I had to comment on your Scott Pilgrim follow up, since people are not allowed to do so on Spoony's site unless its 100% praise.
Anyway, keep doing what you are doing, you are fast becomming the only video reviewer with NC who isent full of himself and dosent BS.

yeah i feel like im being called a hipster for liking Invader Zim and other shit.
Hipsters are douchey ass people who are Pretentious, pseudo-intellectuals generally sporting thick-rimmed glasses and some stupid plaid shirt they purchased at Urban Outfitters. Generally, they own flickr accounts with all of their flat, generic pictures on them and try to pass themselves off as artists despite the fact they probably only know how to use a point and shoot. They listen to non-conformist indie music that usually includes meaningless lyrical content, poor vocals, and monotonous tones. They also partake in said non-conformist bands, over estimating their musical talents as they do all their other art forms.

Miko already put it nicely what a hipster is.
If you need to look further, Devin Faraci is a poster boy hipster from chud.com, he gave this movie a top top grade and called it revolutionary becuase he giggled in the theatre when one of the obscure references came and winked at him, he sat in the theatre and felt good about himself, becuase he, like Spoony said "understood it
And Antwiler himself is a hipster, infact his sickening review of this movie is the EXACT showcase of a hipster who takes what he likes and then projects his own theories and such to make the movie seem deeper than it allready is.
Thats afterall the gimmick of a hipster, your **** smells like flowers, ours not so much.
Brad would never do it (becuase unlike Antwiler he has some class), but he pretty much called Spoony a hipster, which is right on the money.
Then he goes and proves that he is, indeed a hipster.

Look stop protesting. Every one's first reaction to seeing Cera as Scott Pilgrim was to point and say "hipster". Why? Well, we could all just be shallow and too quick to pass judgement or there could be a recognizable demographic of people who are hipsters. And thus something billed as a hipster comedy could be aimed at them.

Nah I already described hipsters in the Scott Pilgrim review so I won't repeat it here, but people seem to think that this movie is called "hipster" because of the video game and anime references. This is false. Scott Pilgrim is a hipster movie for other reasons and as expected this movie is really popular on hipster forums. Also being targeted at hipsters is the least of this movie's problems. The movie is definitely hipster, but that doesn't mean that anyone who likes it is one. It's the same way that not all Sonic Youth fans are hipsters, even though they are a hipster band. It's a shame that Edgar Wright worked on this.

Brad, I would post the Scott Pilgrim part of the video separately; a lot of the people who've complained about it will probably not bother to see it unless it's on its own (and I wasn't expecting it to be a part of this review.)

Why is the CG gore becoming more common anyway? Is it just cheaper to make?
Reply to this
my own little theory is that its a rating reason
CGI gore = R
gore done the right/old school way = NC-17
the "because its cheaper" is another good possibility or even the other half of why we don't get gore done the hard way much anymore
Reply to this
It's got to be the rating thing. There are plenty of low budget films done with effects and make up. Unless you think the budgets for Splinter, Laid to Rest or even The Neighbor were huge there's no other answer. It's also just easier to bung CGI on in post production.

You've mentioned the "Why?" factor of the 7 Evil Exes thing twice now.
It explains it during the third act of the movie. Gideon (Schwartzman) puts together this team and gets them to attack Scott in order to get Ramona back under his control. Simple as that.
I've talked to a few people and a lot of them seemed to miss important plot points for some reason. Why certain things happened that were fairly easy to get if you were paying attention. Not sure why that's happened, I didn't feel like the movie moved so fast as to confuse the watcher.
Dunno.

i know you hate anime but i think you should really try monster by naoki urasawa. It's one of those animes that is a great story with great characters which just happens to be animated and from japan. Its a murder mystery, philosophical, redemption story. The base for the story is a doctor sacrifices his job to save a child instead of a politician and he latter talks to the child, who is in a coma, bad about the director and the child kills him. years latter the child comes back and kills one of his patients in-front of him who that the doctor gets blamed for so he is on the run to save his name and stop the child because he is a serial killer. its gets really complicated later on. if you like story and characters and dont mind it not having action then it might be perfect for you. it will take about 4-8 episodes to get into it but its well worth it.
ps. sorry for the poor grammar im watching your video while im typing.

I'll second the recommendation for Monster, it's an interesting story with well fleshed out characters. Very similar to the old TV series The Fugitive, and it's one of those cases where doing the "right" thing goes horribly horribly wrong. You can watch most of it on hulu for free.

Anyone else notice this movie has a nasty habit of just randomly forgetting about characters? One of the scientists and one of the camera guys never actually die but they just randomly eject from the movie. Heck, one of those guys was on the boat with the main cast yet vanishes without a death. He's just randomly no longer on the boat.
And this movie has a nasty habit of cutting between 2 different scenes in 2 different places and editing them in a way that they look like one scene at the same place. For a while I kept wondering how the heck the people on the boat didn't know about the piranhas that attacked them before when in actuality they did not and it was just crappy editing.

I hope this doesn't time out (took a few reloads to even load the page!), but I did a wiki search on this movie and found that one of the Two Girls Swimming Naked girls you were talking about was Gianna Michaels. Google her, but bear in mind almost every result will likely be NSFW

I really get where he is coming from his point of view. But he really made it clear why he did not like it. Not alot of people can't do that so props man. All i can say is you should try some RPGs and zelda. I have seen you use a Snes before you should pick up A link to the past. Also RPGs you should play this is a list of games that people who dont normally play RPGs do like. Any New fallout game 3 or new vegas and Mass effect 2. You can play all of these on 360, pc and PS3 well mass effect 2 on ps3 next year. So just give them and try soul caliber for fighting games.

Well, as a fan of the original 'Piranha' I'm looking forward to this one; I usually dread remakes, but this looks like a good one. I even heard someone compare P-3D to Troma(!) and judging from your review that sounds about right. Thanks for the review, I look forward to seeing it.

This really is a fun movie and I look forward to seeing it again. Jaws 3D is just awful, but Amityville 3D is mild campy fun even in 2D. And I wholeheartedly agree with you on Friday the 13th part 3.

Awesome review Brad. cant wait for Part 2 of Caligula. Peace & Green

Haven't seen this movie, but there's a list of all of it's game references. A few I would know are Zelda, Serious Sam, Half Life, Sonic, & Mortal Kombat.
I haven't seen a decent gorefest of a movie in years. Hopefully Piranha won't have obnoxious main characters who don;t die, like Fishead Lake.
Reply to this
I kinda agree with Spoony that people who don't like Scott Pilgrim really don't get it.
It's not that they're stupid, it's just that you're not the target. As a 20 year old unemployed Canadian drifter musician type, Edgar Wright just GETS IT.
I honestly hated the trailers and hated Michael Cera and went into the movie with a fairly negative outlook, but it turned out being possibly my favourite film so far this year (Though Kick-Ass, Inception, and Toy Story 3 provide stiff competition)
As for Piranha 3-D, I was gonna give it a pass, but damn, it actually sounds awesome. Might have to check it out.

I think 3d can be more then just shit appears from screen. I think it can bring the depth to the scenes. Like in Inception, thee so many scenes where buildings and streets bending, and i think last part with limbo would be match more impressive if it was shot in 3d.
P.S. Sorry for poor "engrish" =)

Hmm I totally forgot this was being made... And now it's here. Watching the trailer just then really made me giggle. So yeah I think I'll go check it out when it comes out. Hopefully they'll be playing it somewhere around here in 3D.

PIRANHA!
Brad this review mad me happy. At last I have a proper killer beast film to watch. Lots of proper gore. No CGI blood. Great to here.
Re the film feeling too short. Is possible that time flew because it's, you know, enjoyable and not some overly serious ponderous movie dragging for hours.

Nice video Brad, will be checking Piranha out this Tuesday. Also, nice addition to the Scott Pilgrim review, though I have to wonder why so many people who watch these reviews simply cannot accept that not everyone likes exactly what they like. It wasn't his thing, how much more clarification do you need?
Finally, it's not a human face behind the curtain, it's a wolf poster that can be seen in a fair few of his other videos....it just looks like a face because the curtain hides the detail.

I like 3D as long as it involves lots of pointing and things flying out of the screen. I also believe that all 3D films must have a Yo Yo scene that goes on for at least a minute. They charge extra money for these things, which means they owe me a proper 3D experience and that for me includes yo-yo action. Avatar was OK but a yo yo or two and lots of pointing would have made it a better experience.

Honestly, I thought they were trying too hard to make Piranha 3D seem campy and funny. I found it annoying to watch.
I decided to watch Dead Alive after this and had way more fun with it.

Another 3-D film that holds up today is "Creature From The Black Lagoon". Which was originally released in 3-D, if I recall correctly.

Iagree with you about the teenagers being an annoyance to the movie. i was just really disappointed when i left the theater cause i went into it as being a rehash of what the original was, which i enjoyed the original but i left pissed off. i wish i went in with a different mindset, because if you take out all the senseless nude and teen stuff its an okay movie. the gore was amazaing, and i guess with the nudity gave it the R rating haha. I felt like alot of plots started with characters didnt get finished or anything. there really wasnt even an overall big plot either. the explantation for the Piranha seemed to simple and farfetched for me.
Honestly while i was watching it i felt like i was watching an awkward softcore porn movie that had inserts of adults dealing with the real world, kinda like two different movies were filmed. idk, i might have to check it out again to get a better opinion, i only payed $8 to see it which wasnt to bad for a 3D movie.

So this is just Jaws, but with piranhas?

Hey Brad,
I found you through Spoony, and I have to say...I couldn't agree with your reviews of Scott Pilgrim. You don't need to justify yourself here, and while I know it may feel that way because of how many people always back Spoony in his opinions...they're just opinions.
It felt in this vid that to a small degree you backpedaled and were trying to find some sort of compromise...and you don't have to do that. It's your opinion, period. Spoony has his, and that should be that. I understand the two of you are friends, but honestly I'm rolling my eyes when I see him responding back to your videos about it, because really...it seems borderline aggressive. Maybe I'm just seeing it wrong, but it seems to have this air of "My opinion is right and yours is wrong", and I really hope you don't fall into that.
Anyway long story short, I agree with you 100%, and just stay true to your opinions.

So Brad,
Sherlock Holmes fighting a dragon and steampunk Iron man= Completely sensable
Fighting Ex-Boy friends= Too silly. retarded
Just trying to figure you out

He never once said that the events of the Asylum version of Sherlock Holmes were sensible....in fact, he took great pains to tell us just how unhinged that movie is.
And yes, fighting evil ex-boyfriends with Dragonball Z powers is a little silly, if metaphorical.

I have now officially seen the word 'hipster' so many times on this page that my brain cannot parse what the word means anymore. You know when you see a word or stare at one for too long and it just stops making sense?
Look at the word... periwinkle. The longer you look at that and try to make sense of it, the less sense it makes until your brain tries to force you to do something else, lest it short circuit entirely.
Hipster Horror: A genre nobody asked for.

I'm the geekiest nerd that ever did nerd out, and I HATED the references in Scott Pilgrim. It felt like it was referencing games, without knowing anything specific about what it was referencing. I called it the movie that would have been made if the staff of Hot Topic wrote one.
I loved the original Piranha when I was a kid, and I can't believe they remade it actually. It just baffles the mind as to who was clamoring for a 3D remake of of fucking Piranha. Your review gives me more hope that it might not be the worst thing ever for cheese entertainment.
Reply to this
Is it really a remake? The most gory the original ever got as I recall was the guy who had his feet eaten and skeletonized. In this one a guy gets his penis bitten off or something. Plus, the original had some bullshit science plotline about creating cold water piranha (love those 80's movie scientists). I would imagine this one has to have some sort of more refined plot to it.

I loved Piranha 3D. I wrote a pretty shining review of it on my blog and I didn't want to watch this review and have it influence mine.
Finally, if you wanna see an awesome recent Elizabeth Shue flick, check out Hamlet 2. I thought it was going to be one of those stupid pretentious "indie" flicks that you hate but it's so great that it's one of my and my friends' favorite films.

The original Piranha was a better movie, but this is unquestionably more fun.

The only thing I have against Piranha 3D is that it's yet another remake. Actually it's the second remake. Corman did one with William Katt using the footage from the first one.
Much as I like this new one, I wish they would just go back to ripping off ideas, instead of using old films as marketing tools.
Piranha 3D, well it works for me because as a kid I always wanted to see more gore and fish that didn't look like plastic chips being shot out of a bilge pump. But I would like it even more if it was called something else.

I thought the movie was surprisingly entertaining if you like gore and boobies, I liked the ending too personally. The lady in front of me however stood up and yelled, "What the f@#k was that!?" and stormed out of the theater. I barely managed to hold in my laugh till she was gone

Ye gads! This sounds like a Lucio Fulci gore masterpiece type of b-movie. Gonna have to see if i can catch this in the theatres just for the joy of seeing a bunch of bratty teenagers getting it good in delicious 1970s goreness
One of the reasons i couldnt stand 1990s horror flicks besides them feeling watered down was all the teen type actors who just bailed out of a successful television sitcom to start a "solo" career in the big screen in something like the SCREAM series etc. Thank goodness for the return of retro remakes even if they do feel too modern and chock full of CGI effects.
Thanks Cinema Snob for the fantastic review wondrous viewer of miraculous horrors of the imagination made celluloid eternal

My and my girlfriend just got back from a showing and it was a bloody blast! Very very fun 3-D B-movie. Hope they make more like that. So much fun. The whole theater was loving it. Except for one couple that walked out near the middle..hahahaha. This should sate my hunger for monstrous sea creatures till Sharktopus finally airs. Can't wait. Great review, Snob!

Brad, just saw this post on SPINOFF ONLINE. James Cameron comments on "PIRANHA 3-D":
“I tend almost never to throw other films under the bus, but [Piranha 3D] is exactly an example of what we should not be doing in 3-D,” Cameron told Vanity Fair. “Because it just cheapens the medium and reminds you of the bad 3-D horror films from the 70s and 80s, like Friday the 13th 3-D. When movies got to the bottom of the barrel of their creativity and at the last gasp of their financial lifespan, they did a 3-D version to get the last few drops of blood out of the turnip.”
I would love to hear your thoughts on his statement, Brad.
Reply to this
Wow, talk about a joke going way over his head. James Cameron clearly doesn't get it.
“Because it just cheapens the medium and reminds you of the bad 3-D horror films from the 70s and 80s, like Friday the 13th 3-D"
I'm so sure the makers of Piranha 3D were trying their hardest to not have viewers be reminded of the great b-movies of the 70s and 80s.
Please tell me that is a misquote or something. Cameron can't be that ignorant, can he?
Reply to this
I won't be surprised if Cameron did say that since he believes, in his mind, only HE can pull off amazing 3D style movies. But thanks to Avatar being so successful, plenty of 3D films are coming out of the woodwork.

I jumped out of my seat when I heard Richard Dryfess sing "Show me the way to go home"!
I think the movie was great and alot of fun. I also feel the the ending forgot to resolve what happened at the beach. But overall we were rewarded with Dryfess, Lloyd, Shue, Vign Rhames playing Bruce Campbell and old school real special effects.
I say thats a win and Im definitely buying this.

A) I agree with this review. The comics are okay, but the movie is so condensed and altered that it's just not that great.
C) Anime isn't a genre, it's a style of animation. There are various genres within the style, and they don't all conform to a specific type. This one is semantic, I know.

Problems with Scott Pilgrim:
Crappy story: WHY WOULD YOU EVER BE WITH A GIRL WHO HAS 7 EVIL EXS WHO WISH TO KILL YOU!
Crappy characters: Scott Pilgrim is a 23 year old dude who cheats on his 17 year old girlfriend and has NO JOB and doesn't try to get one(IN THE MOVIE!). Ramona Flowers is a Shallow chick who steals boyfriends and until Scott said he loved her went back to her last ex who was a very good guy in the movie! Gideon(in the movie) didn't cheat he didn't steal and he was successful, the only bad part about him was that he took Ramona. FUCK THAT FILM!
In the books Scott does get a job and get his life in order and Ramona's the god damn same but Gideon was a dick he captured and FROZE HIS EXS.

it is a genre within it's self because alot of the animes across the sub genres(Shonen, Shojo hell even Seinen) still contain alot of the same themes and storylines just different levels of content within them and foucs on different issues
