YES YES OMG YES YES CALIGULA FUCK YEA! Woo I know it's your favorite movie of all time so this must have been BALLS hard. I actually was kinda debating myself if you had the courage to actually do caligula, for a moment I thought you would just do something generic or maybe an artsy flick that the snob orgasms all over. I tilt my hat to you man, and cheers for 100 more.I still don't know why the hell people believe that you ARE the cinema snob, for the few viewers that read the comments, and don't already know, bard's taste is a LOT different from the Snob's, that's the fun of it.

Well Brad this was pretty awesome to watch. I liked how you started as yourself then went to become CS even though this is your favorite movie. I really like the cameo's from everyone, they made me laugh. Though I have to wonder, since you got Doug to appear as TGWTG is there a chance he will appear again as the NC? But out of this whole review when I hear the song to TGWTG I knew he was coming, I was like: Oh no, is he gonna appear? And I laughed when he did. Again great job on this and I cannot wait for part 2.

Though I have to say, despite all the weird and gross things, I'm thinking of finding this movie and watching it. :\

I've watched since around the end of your youtube days (just before Spoony Started posting your stuff) and you've continued to get better and better every episode. This episode has got to be the best by far.

My only contentment is you used so many heavy hitter cameos to begin- not that thats bad as I liked all the cameos but damn!

I always loved the cross over with all your other shows, even the ones that arent particularly popular or have many episodes.

The meta opening was great and I really liked the throw back to your original opening from the "dark days"

"Why are you calling Spoony and Ego Maniac?"

The answer to that is quite simple really: why do some people like indie bands but the moment the indie band gets picked up by a major label they reject said band and call them sell outs?

The answer is, because they got popular. Spoony is now extremely popular. Popular enough to live off his donations and the advertising on his website alone, I imagine. Because he is no longer the little guy, he is now a sell out and/or egmomaniac.

Brad can expect the same backlash from a contingent of his fans just as soon as he makes it as popular as Spoony too. Hell, you can see it already in some of the comments, the resentment among some of the community towards his involvement on TGWTG website.

Brad-The ribbing of the film is great fun, But seriously I hope you would plan to do a serious recap of Caligula at some point. Just like any film fan, there is that one film that made them who they are. And It would be interesting to hear you really explain why this film IS your favorite. (First time you saw it, what about the film that drew you back in time and time again, how much info about the making of the film that you gathered ...etc)...In addition to the snob review...I think you really should post a new series-- Brad's Movies-- and just be real. I have my own Cinema obsessions but they are definetly tame compaired to Caligula....I just think you should pay tribute after you (jokingly) tear it down .....No disrespect I would be hard pressed to rip apart my favorite films...But so far great job.

Loved Part 1! This Snob episode is very much like CALIGULA...you don't know what the hell is coming next, but it's always entertainig. Personally I think Brad's self-references to his own other shows worked better than any of the cameos ("Brad Tries" was an unexpected pleasure, as it's my favorite Brad series next to CS). This was just epic, and I will be rewatching. Loved hearing more of the song "Believe it or not". Grew up with Greatest American Hero, and I'll never tire of that track. Brad, thanks for providing so much amazing material. I have been following your videos for nearly two years (since your prolific YouTube days) and it just keeps getting better. Any chance you would market of DVD of some of this stuff through the site? I guess it's probably been requested before. Anyway, I do need to rewatch CALIGULA. Awesome way to celebrate your 100th episode!!

I recently attended a 40th anniversary screening of "A Clockwork Orange," and Malcolm was there! He's a really funny guy actually, we hobnobbed a bit at the after party and I also was in the audience during the Q/A session. I get the feeling McDowell wasn't to proud of this film.

I remember a kid asked a question about "how much fun" it must have been to do that sped up sex scene, and Malcolm sort of went on a rant about how there's nothing "erotic" or "sensual" about a movie sex scene, it's just acting and etc. and he kinda mumbled "Mirren" and I really got the vibe that he was kind of talking about his feelings on doing this film.

This is off topic, really just more McDowell but I thought it was funny when a guy in a Star Trek uniform approached the autograph booth; Malcolm points at the Trekkie and shouts "Trekkie! You! GET OUTTA HERE!" and the Trekkie refused to move and Malcolm said "I want you to remember the fact that I KILLED YOUR HERO!" and the Trekkie responded "You are my hero BECAUSE you killed my hero!"

    Awesome review.
The thing about this film is that you can't help feeling that it's sleaze and general nastiness are as close as anyone will ever get to recreating the actual feel of Ancient Rome.
Apparently all the emperors were mad because they drank wine that was stored in Lead lined containers. And Gladiator fights were loud. They had these gigantic water powered pipe organs that could be heard up to 30 miles away.
Also in Britain there's this cute girly singer named Little Boots in honour of this film and the emperor.

OK, why turn your back on a reviewer you like just because he happens to use someone you don't like? It's an honest question; I knew Spoony and the Snob were friends, so his cameo made sense. Also, I don't get people who say "Spoony killed it" he actually made it a good review using some obvious jokes on the part of the cameos

As for the banhammer thing, you know what? He has that right, and most of the people he brought the banhammer down on were people who were saying things like "you were damn wrong about the Expandables" or "you're opinion is wrong" Guess what it's an opinion everyone has one and they have the right to ban whomever they please. Spoony is just trying to cut down on the riffraff in his site; I go on there and about a good quarter of the comments are people who are complaining about Cameoes TGWTG Linkara the list goes on. They make money by teaming together they help eachother by teaming together and least we forget it was spoony who helped him when he didn't have a home for his videos.

but this is a mindless rant and it's your opinion and it's your loss

This is why I'm a Snob Fan. Spam, arguments, whining, people whinging about other sites, The Snob just lets it ride. It's man v boy. Mighty God of Rock v Precious Indie.
As I said I watch Spoony now and again but never post comments because it seems a bit pointless. And it has to be said a little self defeating, because it reduces the number of hits the site gets. Spoony can be funny, but as WC Fields would say "the kids no trouper".

But hey you're right when you say the Snob's site is fun because of the whining; but he doesn't get near the amount of people whining about helping other reviewers. The landmark 100th episode of the Cinema Snob, was smart, entertaining and highly funny from the beginning to end.

It full of cameos from other contributes to That Guy With Glasses, and having scene some of the other attempts of some of the other critics on the site, this can be extremely clunky, but not here, this was done with grace and aplomb.

Of all the cameos that have featured so far the two best were when Doug appeared as Ask That Guy. I really loved how he failed at trying to tell us about the real Caligula. I also really enjoyed Spoony’s rapid scenery devouring appearance as Caligula,

It was also great to see who well the other shows that Brad is in were worked in to the show, again this wasn’t clunky at all, which it really wasn’t., and it so easily could have been

My favourite of these segment was Brad Tires, I loved when Brad drinks the Blood and says “this must be what the blood tasted like in Dracula 2000”

Also, I have to say what a brave movie it was to write a review that made fun of his favourite movies, I don’t know if I could do that with my favourite movie of all-time

Even if the second part of the 100th episode, falls flat on it’s face (which is highly unlikely) part one is more than enough to make this the best episode of The Cinema Snob.

Brad, should be extremely proud of himself,as he turly outdone himself.

Anyway, there's not much else to be said about how good the video is that hasn't been said. I can only add that it was as informative about the movie as it was entertaining and funny. I can tell you really love this movie alot.
Keep up the good work Brad and friends. I'll be waiting patiently for part 2.

    You're entitled to your opinion.
But Caligula is a unique film. Here is a big budget genuinely epic tale with great actors, scenes as stylish as Kubrick, as epic as Lean, and as violent as Fulci mingling with hardcore porn. The central performance is Malcolm McDowell in full on Alex mode.
What more could you possibly want! Oh yeah the young Helen Mirren.
All the undercurrents bubbling away in all those 1950s cinema-scope The Rise and Fall of Ben Spartacus type films are given a good-kicking. There was never a film like Caligula before and there never will be again.

Why is it that people think their criticism holds any weight in respect to production? Brad will do what he wants, and your opinion won't factor into it at all. The End.

As an musician I appreciate comments even from people who dislike something I did even if I wouldn't change it. And I think Brad as an artist himself (film-making) does this as well. He isn't fragile, he has heard criticism before.

And I really don't think that my comment would change a thing and a lot of the people criticising certain aspects doesn't either but if we don't speak up he would never understand why we dislike certain things.

    Hi Brad,

I like Caligula too, but it is a colossal fucking mess of a film. Gore Vidal wrote it as a study of power, Tinto Brass thought he was making an exploitation film and Bob Guccioni just wanted to make a skin flick.

Meanwhile, the cast seemed to think they were making something along the lines of "I Claudius". It's so incoherent and inconsistent in tone that it's just nonsensical.

It's also historically ridiculous, even for an exploitation film. Caligula started out pretty benevolent, it was only after he fell ill that he became actually psychotic. And much as I like Malcolm McDowell, his performance is essentially just Alex DeLarge in a Toga. John Hurt's Caligula in "I,Claudius" was far better, and he was also much more sinister.

"Caligula" is shot through with glimpses of greatness though (case in point: the beheading machine palace thing) and however stupid it may be, you can't help but feel in different circumstances, perhaps in another universe, it could have been a masterpiece.

I think Caligula is an underrated film, if you take out all the gucccione stuff which looks like shit compared to the brass stuff. I think iyou can edit a good film out of this however the porn inserts are pointless and show guccione is nothing but a smut merchant. My favourite movie is Blade Runner and I even defend the original cut saying it reminds me of old bogart films.

However back to Caligula, Malcolm McDowell is such a good actor and this film shows why, he is better in this then in orange in my honest opinion. John Gielgud stories from this film are legendary there was the first day of shooting where Malcolm and he were talking and gielgud said "have you been on the set yet?" Malcolm said "no" and gielgud said "its marvelous never seen so much cock in all my life." Plus Gielgud said to Mcdowell he had seen the film twice. O' Toole is always good value and here he is at the height of his good valueness. Helen Mirren is good in this and her quote from this film makes me laugh Calgula is a big mess however it does have the big attraction of having backsides and genetials in it.

It is excellent and I do recommend it.

Caligula is like no movie I've ever seen. It's sleazy, gory, filled with huge sets, epic music, with Shakespearian actors that look either stoned out of their minds or just confused on where they are. I still loved it because of it's complete and utter nonsensical nature. It's literally like looking into the mind of a psychopath, there's no telling what's going to happen next, only that someone's probably going to get their genitals mutilated in it.

Though I didn't like how it played Claudius as a bumbling moron, as I Claudius is still one of my favourite shows.

Obviously Caligula is historically inaccurate. Little is known of the real guy and what history there is, is almost certainly a mixture of gossip and propaganda designed to make his assassination more acceptable to the Roman People. He was, as far as anyone can tell liked by ordinary Romans and hated/feared by the senate.
The film though delirious and all over the place does capture one idea. Rome and Romans were not nice. This is a culture that killed people for fun, staged elaborate festivals of torture and death and was, even by the standards of the time, very superstitious. Gladiator fights were not usually fought to the death. but the build up really did involve the mass slaughter of exotic animals and the mass execution of people.

Yes, yes it was. The spear (the Spear of Longinus) is an important Christian/occult artifact, prominently featured in media; anime fans may recall an item of the same name from Neon Genesis Evangelion.

Popular film critic Brad Jones called the movie [Caligula] his "favorite film of all time."

Actually Caligula's original name was Gaius Claudius Caesar Germanicus (later changed to Galius Augustus Julius Caesar Germanicus after he became emperor, although Wikipedia mistakenly put that up as his birthname). The nickname "Caligula" was given to him because of the tiny boots he would wear around the military camps where his father, an esteemed general, frequently took him while he was growing up(the Roman military boots were called "caligae," so the verbal relationship of "caligula" to "caligae" was akin to that of the word "booties" to "boots").

One has to wonder if having a disgustingly cute nickname for his entire adult life contributed to Caligula's insanity. Then again, being forced to watch horrifically bloody warfare and intense human suffering ever since he was three just so his career-whore of a father could show off to his superiors probably didn't help things. Caligula is kind of the Rusty Venture of Roman Emperors.
