Given the style of dress of Horvath I surmise he was found and caught in the 1920's ~ 1930's, and "sweet" as slang did exist at the time (though it was more commonly for referring to music, such as jazz). What seems to irk you about this film primarily seems to be Nic Cage's acting, or lack thereof. I am curious what you thought about the scenes of magic "dueling" where one of the sorcerer's did a spell to cause an effect and then his rival did something in a manner to counter it. I will agree some scenes were awkward to watch as they didn't have a good flow or pacing to them, and what was up with the kid having a pudgy white friend as a 10 year old, but having a pudgy black roommate at 20? I think it should have been the same friend, y'know, for continuity sake. Reply to this

Bruckheimer doesn't tell actors how to act, number one. Simpson did - It got really fucking heated between him and Tom Cruise on the set of Days Of Thunder. Number two; Will Smith was Will Smith in Enemy Of The State, Denis Leary was Denis Leary in The Ref, Denzel Washington was Denzel Washington in Deja Vu, Geoffrey Rush and Johnny Depp were definitely Geoffrey Rush and Johnny Depp in Pirates Of The Caribbean, ESPECIALLY in At World's End... I just don't think it's a Bruckheimer thing (that and I REALLY like Con Air).
And you can't give Simpson credit for The Rock. By '93, he was so fucked up on pills, coke, booze, and growth hormones - The dude could barely function.
You can say that Cage looks sad in this movie because he doesn't want to be in it, but HAS to be in it because he needs the money since he's a compulsive spender and fails at investments forever. However, Cage is the one who came up with idea for this movie. So, I'm not quite sure.
About the reveal of the celebrity magician; Bruckheimer doesn't just think about what might appeal to domestic audiences. Toby Kebbell is kind of a big deal in the British Isles, so maybe audiences in the UK and Ireland saw that and did the equivalent of, "lolwut".
And how DARE you like Kiss Of Death! I figured that YOU of ALL people would know that ALL remakes suck! =P Reply to this

I can see how someone can hate Sorcerer's Apprentice--I had a few problems with it. But I'm a huge fan of Molina and Cage and Jay. A few plot points aside (massive character underdevelopment, mostly) I enjoyed the film.
A few points, just because I'm a nit-picker: It's Horvath, not Horbath. The movie explained a lot more in the beginning (the shop scene) you just have to pay attention. Personally, what stood out to me that was horrible in that scene is that Cage comes across as a would-be child molester. Everything he says once he realizes Dave is the kid he's been looking for sounds like a line from a "Stranger Danger" vid.
My only nit-pick is that when Horvath says 'sweet', he's referring to the wolves on the calendar that he then sends after Dave. It's more like the sweet that someone would say when they see a puppy. Granted, I still see the modern lingo point, because I still have no idea how Horvath knew about satellite dishes.
Yeah, it had flaws, but it was still entertaining. It's one of those that the more you see it, the more the flaws stand out.
But the special effects were good--mostly because they didn't rely on CGI--a lot of it was real. Also, upon repeat watching, you pick up on how wicked Cage's sense of humor is. His character plays a lot of mean jokes on Dave.
Also, my understanding is Cage was a big force behind this movie getting made--he was big behind the sorcerer idea, and was also a force behind The Dresden Files tv show. All of the behind the scenes stuff I've seen and read sounds like the actors didn't complete hate being there, especially since they got to do so much with the effects.
This one really comes down to personal taste. SA definitely fits into the Disney/Bruckheimer mold, and if you don't like that mold, you won't like the movie. And as cool as it would be to see Cage really cut loose in these films, ultimately, it's a Disney film, so what do you expect? Reply to this

I didn't get a chance to read through the other viewer comments, so apologies if I appear to be repeating this. I know I can't be the only one who finds attempting to "Erase" the WTC buildings from memory and history absolutely infuriating. It insults the memory of all who died in the event on 911. Regardless if it is down with good intentions it indirectly promotes denial in my opinion.

My little sister loves The Sorcerer's Apprentice. I always kept my distance from it though. It just seemed like it would be awful. I'm honestly not a big Nick Cage fan myself so that was probably part of the reason I didn't want to watch this movie. Though the only movie I saw him in I can remember liking somewhat is Con Air.

Actually, think of it as being Air Force One, with the President combined with Glen Close's character on the ground. And 9/11. And horrendous CGI. Seriously. A McDonald's toy would have looked more realistic.

The first time I saw this movie, I missed the first five minutes and it was so much better. I came in at the start of the flashback to the the antique shop, and having missed that Prime Merlinian bullcrap... it was better.
Suddenly, there was a gradual reveal. Ooh, Nic Cage wasn't just any sorcerer, he was Merlin's apprentice. Ooh, he wasn't the only one. Ooh, him and Horvath used to know each other. Ooh, a lost love. Ooh, Hiro Protagonist is the chosen one! Still only a mediocre movie, but much improved.
