I think the last 'dark' movie Jackie did was Kirk Wong's CRIME STORY. And even then, by the end of it Jackie had taken over the film and done the typical Jackie Chan action finale.

Watching that turgid KARATE KID trailer Jackie looks really old and bored, and as a super-fan it hurts me to say that he should really consider packing it in.

Unless he can pull out another DRUNKEN MASTER movie.

well crime stroy was defenitly not a topical jackie chan it was by a deferent director who said he was made a jackie because of the changes he made to his own film

Yeah it's probably better he tried some less action roles that involves him doing martial arts because, I think, the guy is getting tired of doing all those crazy stunts while other actors get all the praise for telling a line. It's time he tried doing that and do less martial arts. I don't want him to quit doing his own stunts but from all the injuries he sustained during his career I suppose he also wants to retire the crazy stunts and do something more safe.

Jackie Chan..oh how the mighty have fallen...It seems his roles continue to get worse and worse (at least here in the States)..I'd love to see him in a more serious role and not some 'token' asian side kick. He should just choreograph stunts and action sequences because with this new HORRIBLE/TRAVESTY/SIN AGAINST ALL THAT IS GOOD ABOUT MOVIES Karate Kid remake, it's clear Hollywood has no idea what to cast him in anymore...

On another note, you're one of the only online critics that actually influence me to go out and find obscure films..I think this site is amazing and honestly the best I've come across.

I saw a really good vampire flick the other night called, 'Let The Right One In'. I was flipping through channels at 3am when came across it. I'd really like to hear your opinion on it and I highly recommend it...(I dunno how else to submit recommendations.. /

Sadly, the dark aspect of the film was pretty much cancelled out by the overwhelming cheese factor, a shame.

Fantasy Mission force is one of my favorite "Jackie Chan" movies, too! You gotta love a movie that puts the Japanese forces in Canada during WWII, and opens with a musical number; MST3K wishes they could have done this movie.

I loaned it to a friend years ago, and never got it back. Now I want to this non sequitur of a movie again!

Oy, the shaking of the video is makin' me sea sick. Does your camera have one of those image stabilizing things in it? Because if you leave them on while the camera is mounted on a tripod it can over compensate and make it look like your camera is shaking.

Yeah, and why is there no sunlight coming in through the window? Did you shoot this at night? Lame. No one shoots at night. You gotta have that natural lighting.

In regard to the subtitle issue: Was this disc imported? I have imported a number of DVD's and DVD sets from Japan and Hong Kong, and the subtitles on all of them - ALL of them - are flawed in at least one way or another. Sometimes the translation is just bad, but even when it's passable, the timings are usually off.

I got this Studio Ghibli box set that has every film they made - including some of their made-for-TV films - and the subtitles are often delayed several seconds. Sometimes it's so bad that you can get confused about what character is supposed to be saying stuff, cause they'll have the lines from character A pop up right after character B has finished their line. I actually had to rip a couple of the films, adjust the subtitles and re-burn a new DVD before I could really enjoy them. Not only that, but they also are often only on screen for a second, so you have this very short amount of time to actually read them.

It wasn't until the last several years that they started releasing those films in the US, so I was able to re-purchase them on DVD and get better subtitles, but the flaw with a lot of foreign films that get released in the states is that they often use dub-titles instead of the actual translation subs, which is just lazy, but I guess it works.

    Great review, as usual.

It's funny you said what you did about Ethan Hawke in Brooklyn's Finest and Training Day. It is exactly what I thought!

I wonder if the subtitles could be a PAL/NTSC related issue... Movies in PAL and NTSC run at a slightly different speed, so if you made subtitles for one format and pasted them on a movie using the other, they would get mistimed.

Man, you have to see the Japanese movie Moon Child. It has a couple similar themes to Shinjuku Incident, in that it has Yakuza and Triads, but it's set in a fictional area in China. Oh, and it has a vampire in it, but he's not the focus of the movie. It's a favourite of mine.
