They had The Sadist and Wild Guitar on TCM Underground. They were amazing!

Is "The World's Greatest Sinner" Public Domain? That was outstanding as well.

I saw 'The Sadist' on TCM a few years ago and FUCK did it freak me out! I couldn't believe it! A movie from 1963 starring Arch Hall Jr. actually scaring me.

The reason he dropped out of movies was because his father (who played the dad in 'Eegah') was pushing him to be a movie star and Arch didn't really want to. Most of the movies he did were directed by his dad. So, right there, was extra pressure on him to please his father. In 'The Sadist', directed by someone else who let Arch explore his range, we got a performance that was truly frightening. No good boy to be found here.

What scared me most was his callousness, his total lack of conscious and empathy. The scene where he taunts the one teacher to tears was nerve wracking to watch. And then he shoots him point blank IN THE FACE! Holy Fuck! After that, you knew he was capable of anything, no matter how evil.

I've heard this called 'The Good Arch Hall Jr. Film' and it is. Anyone who saw him in 'Eegah' and thought he was a little twerp should see this. Their minds will be changed.

I'm probably going to get some people mad at me for saying this, even though I'm just being honest, I didn't like this one. I thought Messiah of Evil was amazing. I really didn't enjoy The Sadist.

Not because it was "Too-" anything, really. I'll admit it's a little freaky, but I couldn't get into the characters, the music was timed perfectly sometimes and elsewhere I just couldn't stop thinking "Shut it off!"

So, again, sorry to everyone who liked it. I'm not leaving a negative comment to be a pain. I really respect Brad and I enjoy the site, so I thought the least I could do is give him my honest opinion, like I did on Messiah of Evil. That's about it.

I always thought the climax to this film was just perfect. Like a proto-Texas Chainsaw Massacre ending in many ways...

Hey brad, thanks for posting this I'm one of the guys who heard about you through Spoony. Just wanted to say this movie kicked ass and I'm glad you posted it.

I was really impressed by how suspenseful it really was, it's rare I see a movie and have no idea what characters are going to die or when. The character of the sadist was actually really interesting. Also, nice to see a jump scare with the snakes actually payoff in a huge way during the climax.

Keep these coming please, and everything else you're doing I'm a huge fan.

Okay, thanks a lot for uploading these movies. But,to be honest, its just boring without some sort of funny commentary. So, maybe a little MST3K treatment of these "gems" is in order.

I liked the build up in this film, it eases you along then sucks you in. It is a very good piece of cinema. Just shows you don't need a huge budget to make compelling movies. Was it the greatest film I have ever seen? No. Was it a lot better than the schlock they try to pass as blockbusters these days, hell yes!

Wow you can really tell this movie is from 1963 if only because of how sexist it is. Moments like the woman having to ask about the rules of baseball and not understanding them were hilarious

Wait... how exactly is that sexist? Girls who haven't the faintest clue about baseball no matter how much you explain it to them are completely real. I've dated at least a couple of them.

Thanks for posting this one, Brad. Pretty good performance and plenty of good scenes. I have to admit though, it's hilarious how this is an Arch Hall Jr. movie with Marilyn Manning in a desert where the warning "Watch out for snakes," actually applies!

Brad, first and foremost I have to thank you for showing these amazing public domain films on your site. I've only just started watching these ("Messiah of Evil" was genuinely one of the most suspenseful movies I've ever seen—that scene in the theater was pitch perfect) and I'm still wondering why they don't make movies like these anymore...

Is it just that Hollywood has gotten so formulaic that stories suffer for it, or are we all so bored of ourselves that we'll sit through anything?

Watching Arch Hall, Jr. play a character as depraved as this reminds me of Robert Mitchum in "Cape Fear." Before I saw "Cape Fear," I'd only seen Robert as one of those reluctantly heroic (but always awesome) characters. In my childhood favorite, "El Dorado," he was this integral part of a fine-working team of characters that took down the bad guys and really left this impact on me.

When I was older, I caught "Cape Fear" on AMC and realized that Robert Mitchum was so much more than the "reluctant hero" actor because I was frightened by him. Not just his character, but of Robert as well. He's so damn good at playing that horrible man that

I can cite "Cape Fear" as the movie that made me realize that actors don't always have to be pigeonholed into one type of role.

Again, I'm left wondering why the hell they don't make movies like "Cape Fear" (remakes don't count) and "The Sadist" anymore?

It's been a while since I've seen a film with villains I could hate 100%, and it was so rewarding when they died. Especially since they died from the consequences of their own actions, and not at the hands of the heroes.

For what it is, I liked this film; Arch Hall Jr really worked the crazy-eyes monobrow and played a good punk, and the movie would've been pretty dark for the time period it was made. One thing that bugged me though was how nonchalant the police were about finding the .45 clip on the ground, and that it apparently took 2 1/2 hours for an APB to be put out about the dead sailor.
As someone who doesn't watch TV and doesn't have the money to buy DVDs, I like PDT for bringing likeable films to my screen.
